My previous half century or so has not exactly been marked by idleness or boredom: I’ve pursued an academic career in linguistics, Peace Corps service in West Africa, teaching English as a foreign language abroad in places as diverse as Japan and the Cape Verde Islands, and a cultural diplomatic career primarily in Central and Eastern Europe. I even had time to get cancer and be on the road to recovery. Therefore, my approach to retirement in Southwest France is as an extension of what has come before: full of activity, people, a sense of discovery and personal fulfillment.
