When I write, it is generally text for websites, brochures, newsletters and the like. I have written many training manuals, business letters, and reports. I even had a short-lived small-town newspaper column about writing for a time. While that type of writing requires a lot of discipline and structure, there is little room for imagination and only slightly less space for crafting poetic prose in those genres. Sitting down to the keyboard with total abandon when it comes to the language of fiction is a rare treat for me. Sometime, I will admit, I go a bit overboard creatively speaking. Too much alliteration (sometimes seemingly swell sounds simply slide softly swirling into scenes), too much thrashing about by my characters (calm down, girl!), too much detailed information to describe a setting (get on with it already…). But, still, I love the opportunity to just let go and let my fingers—and my imagination—fly.
