Topic: Welcome to the Fantasy/Magic & Sci-fi group

Welcome to the Fantasy/Magic & Sci-fi group (formerly the Medieval Fantasy/Magic group), an active meeting place for writers of all genres of the fantastical. This includes, but is not limited to, traditional fantasy, stories of magic, science fiction, space operas, steampunk, urban fantasies, and horror-style tales of vampires, werewolves, and zombies.

Be sure to check out the In Memoriam thread for a tribute to Amy Sonada, the group’s founder, who passed away in 2019 after a two-year battle with cancer: https://www.thenextbigwriter.com/forums … onada.html.

Although there are no strict rules for this forum (except be kind), if you'd like to use the forum for brainstorming with other members about your stories, the preferred practice is to create a brainstorming thread (i.e., a "topic"), usually one per story, named Story Name by Member Name or similar. Group members can then use that thread to discuss the named member's story. You can keep updated on discussions by subscribing to the threads that interest you, or simply check out the forum from time to time and comment when the spirit moves you.

Other topics/threads for other purposes are welcome as well, including requests for reviewers for new stories. Please be prepared to reciprocate, though.

If you're new to writing or new to the site, please also join the Writing Tips & Site Help group, where experienced authors and members will do their best to answer your questions. Be sure to check out the forum post in that group on how to maximize the number of reviews you get.

Re: Welcome to the Fantasy/Magic & Sci-fi group

Note: Ignore the current name if you're new. We gotta fix that

K.dot - you once posted a great discussion on characters/words. It was destroyed with the crash! Can you possibly repost it? Would it be more applicable to the Writing Tips forum? Thanks.

The link to Amy's memorial is incorrect.

Oh, and hey everyone!

You haven't kicked me out yet?! Damn!!!

Mostly work. We're also finishing up the shed in the backyard. In between I'm trying to find some time to write.
What's news on your side of the world?

Re: Welcome to the Fantasy/Magic & Sci-fi group

Janet!  Yay. So nice to see you here in your old stomping ground. Brings back great memories.

Speaking of which, Queen Aussie has become a permanent fixture of my sci-fi romp. If you recall, she became rather demented during the opening battle, but was the only crew member to survive (she ejected just as Admiral St. James rammed the Imperial dreadnought, destroying both ships). Aussie went on to become CEO of Lo Bidda Corporation (think ACME), the inept company that built her, and is the mastermind behind numerous terrorist attacks across the galaxy, intended to drive up sales of military materiel. She's being hunted, so she's gone undercover, hiding in plain sight as the galaxy's first roving android reporter: Monarch Ozzie. smile

And I'm just getting warmed up. smile

How are you doing? In case we don't see you later this month, Merry Christmas. smile

I've been looking the site over. Still recognize quite a few names and faces. Others are also very quiet.

Wow, she's been busy! This is awesome. I love how she took over the company that built her! Good grief, they are inept! hahaha And wow, no one recognizes her?! I hope she's reporting the news to suit her agenda and make her look good... *scowls*

Not making money, writing a little. The border reivers are still waiting for their books while I every slowly write my contemporary series. Book 2 is slowly starting to come together. Work has been really busy with a lot of traveling. Our company restructured mid-Covid of all things and everyone thinks they know how it now works but in reality no one does lol It's CHAOS and has been for 3 years. I'm still in projects. May try to make a career change.

And Merry Christmas to everyone! I'll try to check in the rest of the year at least.

Is New Jersey still around?!

Here, mostly lurking.  I've been helping a formerly active member, Apricots, who published her first book about a year ago.  Most of the work on that book--first of a trilogy--was done here before the mechano-amnesia.  The book is =Starlight Jewel=, published under the name E.L.Lyons, and no, it's not a romance.  It's a character-driven fantasy which includes a romance, but the world and its magic are quite original.

What a great name.

Re: Welcome to the Fantasy/Magic & Sci-fi group

K.dot, are you still a moderator of this group? If so, I believe you can change the group's name.
Also, see if you can make a forum post sticky. I'd be curious to know if the feature still worked back then.

Better in that her first name gives the nickname 'El(l)'

Re: Welcome to the Fantasy/Magic & Sci-fi group

Nope, not moderator. We'll need Sol to fix the groups (again)

I was going to try finalizing the list of groups to keep that I posted in Premium some weeks ago, but I'm snowed under with personal crud at least until the end of the year.

Well, heck.  You might enjoy it.  El has a way with characters.
