Topic: Microsoft now flagging two spaces after period an error

A giant new hole in the northern ozone. A killer pandemic. And now this.

The age of Homo Sapiens is coming to an end.

Re: Microsoft now flagging two spaces after period an error

Hell, it's been that way in Word since I started using it about fifteen years ago -- they didn't ban it or anything but just in a round about way told you it was stupid to waste all that extra effort. Running my own business I was always one for efficiency. Not sure why you needed two spaces anyway other than perhaps it evolved in the typesetting for printers. As the old saying goes, good riddance. But before I get yelled at, if you want to keep using two spaces you can still do so. You don't have to correct flagged errors. And I doubt anyone will notice either way. Take care. Vern

I have it on good authority that the killer pandemic uncannily targets double spacers. That lends credence to the conspiracy theorists who believe Covid-19 was lab-created to target older folks and reduce the load on the Social Security and Medicare funds. Almost all double spacers are old and spend 12% of their writing time hitting the space bar.

It makes scientific sense to me that Covid-19 could get fogies who strike the space bar twice after each sentence. More contacts with the biggest typewriter key by the thumb which is the digit seniors use to pick their noses with when not being watched.

If you are still a double spacer, wipe your keyboard with Clorox Wipes before each writing session and wear latex gloves you will have to take off to get a good grip on boogers.

And now we know the rest of the story, lol. Take care.

Re: Microsoft now flagging two spaces after period an error

I don't remember the last time I doubled spaced after the end of a sentence. I think I stopped the first time I used Word. BTW the new Word has a grammar function now. No worries about where a comma, period or semi colon goes any more! Also it will clean up your writing by highlighting extra words you don't need.

Re: Microsoft now flagging two spaces after period an error

I learned to put two spaces after the end of a sentence when I first took typing on a manual typewriter in 1971. Eventually, I've stopped doing this.

Editors, proofers, and publishers care, Temple. Ever since typesetting left the manual stage, where two spaces were used to make the gaps clearer. Now, two spaces is considered wasteful of space and writers are asked to eliminate them and go for a single space.

Word can be set to flag (or not flag) the use of two spaces in the Options settings.

Actually, no they don’t, Douglas. Write however you like.  If someone doesn’t like it, a Search and Replace, Replace All can solve the matter in two seconds.   The whole discussion is moot and has been for about 30 years. It’s a tempest in a teacup.

This reminds me of when my kids learned something new in school, like the earth revolves around the sun and I had to act surprised to hear it.

Dirk's experience with Word is a lot different than mine. I've been using Word for 29 years and from his post I gather he's just moving to a Word program from a typewriter, maybe, and just discovered his double spacing habit would be flagged.

While I am surprised that Dirk even mentioned something I learned 29 years ago, I have to remember he just discovered it and to him it's a big deal.

Now, I could be mistaken and Dirk is just trying to start a conversation, if that's the case, never mind. I am just as bored as the rest of you and this 'tempest in a teacup...' got my mind on something else for a while.

Re: Microsoft now flagging two spaces after period an error

It was a tongue-in-cheek post, dagny, although I am fascinated by how much activity those two little space characters have generated in this thread. Please, all, do continue. This is a welcome break from Netflix's V Wars, my dwindling investments and toilet paper supply, and round-the-clock coronavirus news.

I knew it! You brat!

Re: Microsoft now flagging two spaces after period an error

I used to write my "shower thoughts" down on toilet paper as precious nuggets to be used in my novel. Nowadays, though? The toilet paper itself is much too precious.

Re: Microsoft now flagging two spaces after period an error

That brings my previous novel to mind, John, because it was crap. I only admit this to see how long we can keep a thread about white space going.

Re: Microsoft now flagging two spaces after period an error

How about a huge philosophical white space I call Schrödinger's whitespace? Doesn't the very act of printing "This space intentionally left blank" defy the statement? Quite a few novels have blank pages at the end, but are they really blank, or was there something supposed to be printed there?

Well, the pages were blank until they put "This space intentionally left blank" on them, which I guess could be rather moronic if you thought about it long enough, but I'm sure we're not going to do that. Right? Anyway, those pages are initially left blank (before the aforementioned addition) because there are times when additional pages might have to be added and instead of having to reset the entire book they simply use those pages to adjust the numbering and placement of the pages. Now, since we know that, why is it that all that maneuvering couldn't be done the way we move stuff around in Word or such programs. Well, I don't know and suppose someone could ask a printer and inform inquiring minds. We ae inquiring, right? At any rate, I'm just doing my part to keep the non-essential material flowing. Take care. Vern
