Hey Marilyn. OMG!! So sorry to hear you've got the creeping cruds. Sounds like you've got that crap that only spring will cure.
Tell your doc to give you a shot of Rocephin. Hurts like a SOB but it will knock that shit out. And drink lots of hot lemonade. A coffee cup at a time. Use fresh squeezed lemon juice and add a dab of honey (local if you can get it.) If that doesn't work, get drunk. You'll still be sick but you won't care. :-)
Take care of you and get better!

Re: What happened? (38 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
I stumbled across this site in April of this year. I was already a member of four other review/critique sites but I wasn't really satisfied with them, for various reasons. In all honesty, if it hadn't been for the free trial offer, I wouldn't have joined. I like to know what I'm buying before I cough up the cash, if at all possible. After the week was up, I coughed up the yearly membership fee, and here I am.
I have been a reading and reviewing fool since I joined. I've amassed enough points now that I can spare the time to read/review postings that don't offer points. These are the ones I read simply because I love the story and want to see where it goes. I've found that most people here reciprocate reviews on a fairly consistent basis. Not everyone jumps right on it when they receive a review. There's not always a pay-back review waiting on me ten minutes after I post a review. And that's fine. I don't expect that. Some never give pay-back reviews at all. And that's fine, too.
I've been a prolific reviewer for several reasons. One, I'm a fast reader and a fast typist, so I can plow through a review in a relatively short time. Two, I'm retired and have wwwaaayyyy too much free time on my hands. I do grab a bit of extra income each month by freelance writing, so that takes a bit of my time. But I do less than ten freelance jobs each month, so I still have a lot of time on my hands. Three, I'm not a big fan of TV so I don't spend a lot of time glued to the idiot box. I'm thus free to do reviews pretty much whenever I want. (I'm also a recluse wanna-be, but that's not working out so well at the moment because family and friends aren't cooperating, but there's still hope.) I understand that everyone's situation in their lives doesn't allow them to spend as much time reading and reviewing as mine does. So when I don't get a pay-back review right away - or even if I don't get one at all - it's all good. I don't get bent out of shape over it (not saying that anyone here does.)
It is a bit disheartening when a reviewer faithfully does reviews chapter after chapter, up until chapter 20 or so, then sort of drifts away. It saddens me but I don't take it personally. People have their reasons. I'm guilty of the same thing in a few instances. It's usually a genre that isn't my favorite or, to be honest, the story just doesn't really hold my attention. But I do try to stick with a book once I start reviewing it. I also try to offer a review for new people to the site. If the free trial users post something, I do my best to review it. That's the only way new members will cough up the fees for an on-going membership. Had I not received several reviews during my free trial, I would not have joined up. So I think it's important to make the effort to review postings from those listed in my 'new members' section on my dashboard.
Right now, I'm not reviewing as much because I simply had to step away for a while if I was ever going to get my own book finished. I sent messages to most of my connections who review my work faithfully, letting them know I wasn't dropping off the face of the earth or abandoning their work. Honestly, I found I was spending so much time reviewing the work of others that I was neglecting my own writing. So I'm taking a bit of "me" time to do some serious editing before jumping into the (potential) publishing pool.
Most of the reviews I've received have been very helpful. I can tell the reviewer put some thought into the remarks. Some have been less-than-flattering, and that's okay. I don't want sugar-coating - it doesn't help me. Some have been soft-ball, but even that can be helpful sometimes. Either way, I appreciate someone taking the time to do it.
As for the forums, I'm not much of a forum participating kind of girl. It's just not usually my thing.
One change I would like to see. I would like to have those who close their accounts, don't renew their accounts, or don't sign up for a subscription after the trial purged from the roles. I've got multiple connections in my connections list that are no longer involved on site. I'd love to see them go bye-bye automatically, if possible. If there's already a way to purge my connections list, I'm not aware of it.
Since joining up here, I've let my other memberships lapse or cancelled them outright. I found it is just too much to try to keep up with more than one active review site. And while I don't always get multiple reviews within minutes of posting a new offering here, I found I got more reviews here than other sites. The caliber of the reviews here are much better. There's more of a sense of community here than the other sites to which I subscribed. So, here I am.
I don't know how things used to be around here but I've been satisfied here, for the most part. I don't like the lulls in the action but I understand it's going to happen from time to time. With the holiday season coming up, I don't expect a lot of reviews. That's one reason I chose now to pull back from reviewing so much to take an editing meat cleaver to my own manuscript. When I need a break from that, I drop a review or two.

The first thing that comes to mind is tuberculosis. It can also infect the kidneys, which totally screws up blood chemistry, especially potassium. Lots of nasty things can happen with hyperkalemia (high potassium.)
Thromo-embolism can cause coughing up blood. (hymoptysis). Others that come to mind are COPD and bronchiectasis.
Do a search for 'hymoptysis inflammatory disease' and you should get plenty of nasty conditions to choose from.

Re: Reviews (7 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Hi Ray.
Here's my two cents worth. I welcome any and all comments. I've received reviews that were obviously written with the reviewer's lips firmly planted on my butt cheeks, and I've received reviews that completely brought my head out of the clouds and slammed it brutally into a hard dose of reality. Both have helped me improve my writing, and I'm thankful to each and every reviewer who took the time to look at my work.
I personally prefer that a reviewer begin at the beginning and go through the entire work, chapter by chapter. If I don't want any more input on a particular chapter(s) or short story, I'll change it to inactive status where no further reviews are possible. As long as you as a reviewer can access the work, rest assured that any and all comments are still welcome. I don't discount those who begin reviewing with Chapter 947 but usually find there are comments made that would have been readily explained had the reviewer read the previous 946 chapters. But I don't ignore a reviewer's input because they choose not to begin at the beginning. When I say 'any and all comments welcome,' that's what I mean. But that's just me.

Topic: Why so quiet.... (3 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Hi everyone!
I figured this was the quickest way to let anyone who's interested know that I haven't died, I haven't left the site, I haven't defected to another country, I haven't been committed or arrested, and I'm not so poor that I can't afford the wifi bill. I'm fine, my son is fine, and my fur babies are fine.
However, I am experiencing something that's been the bane of my existence since I reached adulthood "way back in the day." I have too much to do and no time to do it. Real life is becoming quite the little bitch and totally screwing up my play time. That's why I'm not reviewing and posting with the same vigor I've demonstrated since joining the site. Got a sister-in-law who fell off her porch and shattered her kneecap into 6 pieces. I'm helping her. One of my fur babies has a rash that needs doctoring three times a day. My nephew and his wife are expecting in October and I told my sister I'd help with baby shower (what the hell was I thinking??) All my freelance clients apparently got together and decided to swamp me with work, all at the same time. I type fast, but JEEZ!! Being the greedy, money-grubbing old fart that I am, and seeing as how I like to have electricity and food on the table, I can't see my way clear to turn down any of the offered assignments.
So....I am apologizing for not keeping up with reciprocal reviewing. That is definitely NOT my preferred way to roll. Please know that I'm still here and still trying to get in a crit or two when I can. But I must ask your indulgence for the time being as I try to get all this "adulting" bullshit under control so I can focus on what's important. Meaning writing.
If you can't hang with, I understand completely and I want you to know that I appreciate all the work everyone who has done crits for me put into it. Each and every one was helpful, and God knows I can use all the help I can get!
I am keeping track and will pay back each crit I get. It just may take a while and for that, I am eternally sorry.
Thanks for your understanding, and in the immortal words of Ah-nold...."I'll be back."

Connor crossed himself and recited the Trinitarian formula. "In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen." .......
Next chapter's version: Connor crossed himself and recited the Trinitarian formula. "Insert in here whaterver he's praying for this time."
Next chapter's version: Reciting the formula, Connor crossed himself. "Now he says whatever prayer is called for this time...."
As a non-Catholic, something along this line would let me know that he's saying all that Latin stuff before his prayer each time. After you've given it verbatum once, then referenced it by name the next time, and finally incorporating it into the action of crossing himself the third time, I've got the idea that this is his standard way of praying.
Everyone else saying "Amen" tells me they either parroted his words or agreed with them. Just a collective "Amen" echoing around the room tells me all I need to know.
That's my non-Catholic two cents.

Bobbie, are they members of Premium? And are they publishing to Premium? It requires points to publish to this group, and new members often bypass publishing to Premium because they don't have enough points. You need to be a member of a group to which they published.
What error message do you get?
Hey Dirk!
It says on his profile that he's a member of this group. I'm a member of this group. Here's the message I get when I click on the writing he's posted:
Not Authorized
Please join one of the following groups to read this posting: Young Adult Writers.
Another way to get access is connecting with ***** using the Connect button on their profile page. (I took out his name 'cause he may not want me posting it here.)
I would chalk it up to a glitch but this isn't the first time I've gotten this notice on new members who have showing the same groups I belong to. I try to give new members a review as quickly as possible. I know how much I appreciated those early reviews when I first joined. Just trying to pay it forward...

As far as I can tell, I'm a member of this group. I'm supposed to be able to review the works of others who are subscribed to this group when they set their profile to allow fellow group members to read their works. So why am I finding myself blocked from reading the works of some new members who are members of some of the same groups as I am? 'Tis most frustrating.
Any ideas?

Re: How does one get their Mojo back? (15 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Hi Bill.
Here's what worked for me: reading.
I started reading anything and everything I could. What I read was books, short stories, etc., that were NOT in my favored genres. Looking at other things helped spur my own creativity in the genres I love. Then I found this place, and my "mojo" took off! I'm reading such a variety of genres and types of work here! I'm even reading - and LIKING - poetry! I'm 62 years old and I've NEVER read poetry that I wasn't forced to read. I've rediscovered my passion for writing and I'm having a big 'ole time writing again.
Hang in there. Definitely don't give up. Write a short story about writers block

Hi Brett. Welcome to the site. You are going to LOVE this place!
I'm still a newbie myself. I've been here two weeks, maybe. And I am seriously in love and completely addicted. I've gotten the most constructive feedback on my writing EVER! I can tell a difference in the way I approach my writing already, and I think there's actually been some improvement in what I write. (Which proves you can teach an old dog new tricks.)
Best advice: go premium! Bite the bullet, cough up the fee and collect those points! It is really much easier than it sounds and it's fun, too.
Look forward to reading more of your work.

Thank you all for your responses.
After playing around with it, and pondering on the advice given, I decided to forego the prologue, at least for now. I'm working on revising the first 10 chapters I have posted here and it's looking like a prologue is not going to be needed.
So...we shall see how it goes....
Thanks, again!
