I'm alive, I swear! Finally finished a difficult chapter a week or so ago, but between work, the flu, and family, I have had no time for reviews. Crossing my fingers that I can get some done this weekend and post Dea's next chapter for y'all to tear to pieces.

"When an adventuring sorcerer gets into trouble and tries to get out of it, it's like falling out of a tree onto a rotten roof, which breaks, dropping you onto the rotten floor of the attic, which drops you down into the second floor. But that's rotten, too, so you fall through into the first floor.
Which is when you fall into the kitchen where the lunatic cook is sharpening her knives.
That's when her pet alligator gets you."?
Love it. For some reason, it's not the repeated falling that bugs me, but rather the repeated use of the word 'rotten'.

Do replacement screens often end up brighter? Mine seems to be.
Not usually, but it depends on how old the previous screen is. If, by chance, the computer recognized a new screen, it's possible that the settings were reset. It's more likely that the old screen's backlight was slowly dying, though.

Laptop screens are fun to replace. I once received a free like-new laptop because a customer didn't want to deal with the hassle of replacing the screen, which they had broken by stepping on the darn thing.

Ancestors forgive me. I follow the enemy.
Ooh, I like it. Still not sure about the second one. I don't like the dragon referencing themselves by name, as it reminds me of Japanese culture where referencing yourself is considered childish. I'll play with it a bit, see what I can come up with. Thanks for the help!

Re: The Colorless Dragon Thread (354 replies, posted in Fantasy/Magic & Sci-Fi)
I have a slight dialogue dilemma. I decided at one point that dragons don't use contractions in their speech, however I have two instances where I can't seem to find a smooth replacement for "I'm". It just sounds strange to use "I am". At this point, I'm half-tempted to make "I'm" an exempt phrase from my no contractions rule. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Dea starts following a human and says the below. I love the phrase, so I'm having a hard time finding a replacement.
Ancestors forgive me. I’m following the enemy.
This one's for a dragon that hasn't been introduced yet. It's during a high-tension scene, so it needs to remain short.
Hold tight, little one. I’m coming for you.

Sleep less. Write more.
This needs to be a poster and I need to hang it right by my desk.

So much to write, so little time. I'm having troubles with the ending of Dea's next chapter. Might flip to another perspective temporarily so I can keep my brain cells from frying. That is, if I can actually manage the time to write. I think my average lately has been 100 words per day, a rather depressing average in my opinion.

Ooh, sounds fun! The irony here is that my story also includes dragons, mindspeech, and a character named Maya.

I brought two bottles of sunscreen, one of which is now empty. Somehow, I still managed to get a sunburn on my shoulders (backpack rubbed it off). Anywho, Disney was super fun, but super exhausting. I feel like I need a vacation from my vacation. I did manage to write a bunch, though. Getting it typed up and edited, then I'll be posting it for y'all to poke and prod.

In an attempt to avoid the cattle prod... I will be MIA from tNBW for the next week and a half as I visit some family and explore Disneyland. I will be bringing my notebook, though! So there will hopefully be some scenes to transcribe from paper to PC when I get back.
Hugs to all of you awesome possum people!

No worries. I'll be MIA for the next week, so no rush. I appreciate it, Amy. Your reviews always manage to improve my writing as a whole.

Hmm... I can't get the link to work.
Alright. I've got the whole scene planned out and a small portion of it written. Just need to find time to actually finish writing it.

Re: The Road of Trials (2 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
That's a difficult list to make. It all depends on what defines a trial, as well as what defines a win, fail, or draw. A quick glance at my outline says I have 19 trials with 5 draws, 5 fails, and 9 wins. But I also have multiple protagonists and a win for one could be a fail for another. For instance, one of my first chapters is about a main character stealing an item. She successfully steals it, but then her sister (another MC) gets arrested for the crime. Is that a win, fail, or draw?

Re: The Colorless Dragon Thread (354 replies, posted in Fantasy/Magic & Sci-Fi)
Sorry for being so darn slow. Had my wisdom teeth pulled and right after that, I changed jobs. Major learning curve and we're shorthanded, so my days at the office are far too long. Then my family's motorhome decided to grow mold in the walls and we've been tearing it apart every weekend, hoping to have it finished by the time our planned vacation comes around. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to write every day and when I do, it's only 100-300 words at a time.
Dea has hijacked my muse, so I've been slowly working on her next chapter (#8). I have to convincingly portray a battle between an insane dragon and a human from the PoV of a dragon hatchling with fragmented knowledge on both dragons and humans. Also, there's magic involved. I'm not the greatest at action scenes, so I've got my work cut out for me. Crossing my fingers that I can get it figured out this week and fully written in the next week or two.

Aww, good luck Amy! I know it doesn't even remotely compare, but I just got four wisdom teeth pulled and the pain meds make me seriously sleepy. I'll be glad when the healing is over and I can finally eat real food like steak and fried chicken and hamburgers.... Ack! Now I'm drooling.
Anywho, I appreciate the time you spent tackling my latest chapter and I hope your nausea and fatigue get better!

Chapter 6, "Lost and Found", is up! 2k words and only 1 character. Hopefully it works.

Re: The Colorless Dragon Thread (354 replies, posted in Fantasy/Magic & Sci-Fi)
Alright. An entirely new chapter six is almost complete, after which I will be working on eight, eleven, or twelve, depending on which PoV I'm in the mood for (yes, I know my writing is beyond chaotic). I'll try to get some reviews done in the next few days, between my summer projects and a job change. Any specific requests?

Thanks. Interesting coincidence. I'm on gabapentin for chronic pain.
I take that, too! Oddly enough, doc says some of my pain meds are addictive, but I've never had an issue. Anywho, total tangent. I'll go hide in my forum-stalker corner now.

Re: WORD is mentally challenged (15 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
I use Word 2016 on one of my computers (I bounce between two due to my work) and while I very rarely have the word correction problem that you do, Janet, the program still regularly tries to suggest words in places that make absolutely no sense. I can't find any examples at the moment since I usually right-click and 'Ignore' it (those squiggly lines irritate me to no end), but it is highly aggravating when your word processor decides it's a better writer than you are.

I've been working on getting my chapters sorted properly since I revised the plot and outline. Chapter 7 is done and up, re-posted so y'all can get some points. It's a combination of my previous "A Change of Fate" and "The Auctions". The dialogue between Maya and Merrin has been completely re-done, but the rest of it has only endured minor revisions like changing Madame to Madame Nightsend and changing the elf's gender. I'm hoping I'll be able to get one of my newer chapters up soon, as well... after I do a bucketload of reviews, of course.

Maybe I'll phrase it different, then. If we want to be technical about it, they are "gone" from their seat of power, but I see your point. I could say the royal bloodline was diminished, or something along those lines?
