OOps! Sorry about the multiple chapters. I'll keep to the rotation.
Finished chapters for Matthew, Randall, and Jube. I skipped CJ because I've read her first book and the second one is no longer posted?

Re: What makes YA or NA different? (21 replies, posted in Young Adult & New Adult)
Just started a class for my MFA--it's a YA workshop. The text is "The Complete Guide to Writing for Young Adults vol. 1" by Gabrielle Harbowy. Each chapter is written by a different YA author (most of which are unfamiliar to me). So in chapter 1, they define YA. The author, Adrienne Kress, says MG, YA and NA are defined by the age of the main character which indicates the age of the reader. MG targets ages 8-12 and the MC should be no older than 13. YA targets 13-16 and the MC should be 16 or 17. NA targets 17+.
Interesting tidbits: This controversy exists because there really was no YA genre prior to Harry Potter. 55% of YA books currently are purchased by adults--for themselves or their kids. Content doesn't matter when determing genre. MG can be edgy--Judy Blume has books that include masturbation or losing virginity. YA can be sweet like my flying horse books!

HA! Thanks for the plug, my friend! I will also reciprocate if the reviewer wants. I'm great at finding grammar errors, but not so good at War books or poetry.

I've been slow to dive into the new site, so I'm still exploring. I think I've figured out how to do everything I need to, so far anyway. I love the inline reviews and the ability to message the reviewer with explanation or followup questions. I'm still trying to find some of my connections from the old site, but that's coming along, too. Overall, good job!

Okay, I'm trying very hard to figure out this site and get back into regular reviewing. I miss the forums where I could 'meet' someone new to me and exchange reviews.

Re: Book Marketing Tactics that Worked (11 replies, posted in Marketing Your Writing)
I've marketed in person at appearances, which I enjoy personally.
I've done free ads on various sites and online book tours and promos. Most successful were the Amazon Kindle promos once I pushed them on Goodreads. My marketing has been limited since I write and teach during the year and write/promote during the summer. In summer my sales go up, in winter they fall off.

OMG girl it's about time! Fabulous book! I will recommend it to everyone! I just saw Kindle on Amazon. Is the paperback available?

I would forget about how long the chapter is and go with your instinct.

Re: The trouble with the movies (10 replies, posted in Historical Fiction)
lol! See, sounds I would never catch. My son is a production assistant. He's worked on independent feature films and some TV shows. Watch a movie with him and it will ruin the movie for you forever! I remember taking him to see Monsters, Inc. when he was still in high school. He was in an animation course in school, using the same software they used on the show. He was totally disgusted with the way they made the blue hair move on the big monster. Yeah. I never would've noticed that. To each their own, right?

With my first novel (YA historical fantasy) I settled on chapters of 3,000 for no apparent reason. lol I honestly don't think chapter length matters if the content holds the reader's interest.

Re: The trouble with the movies (10 replies, posted in Historical Fiction)
I may pick your brain about Wales next year--I have a historical fantasy world set in the mountains of Gwynned. I have three published novels and am starting a new one next year. This year I'm working on a book set in territorial Hawaii--it starts there anyway.
One of the worst movie errors was in The Mummy. The Book of the Dead was an actual book. Yeah. Should've been a scroll. Every one of my sixth graders knows that!

Hi! The Strongest Start tends to draw really dramatic entries. They're excellent, but not my cup of tea so I don't enter.

The Golden Compass series (author is Pullman) was a favorite of my boys at that age. Nancy Farmer's The Ear, the Eye and the Arm is good, too.

Re: What makes YA or NA different? (21 replies, posted in Young Adult & New Adult)
Hi everyone! My sixth grade students enjoy reading YA books--it's more grown up for them than Middle Grade. So I want my books to be innocent enough for them to read. Calling them YA works now that NA is around because it labels them as NOT sexual or edgy violent.

Oh, a group for younger ones. Yay! Invite Gail McNally. I can't figure out how to do that. And I have a picture book I'm going to post.

Re: Marketing YA books (41 replies, posted in Young Adult Writers)
What's Riffle? I am woefully horrible lately on marketing. I did a month long blogfest promo that I set up myself and attracted some new followers to Twitter and blog, and a couple new readers. I hosted a stop on a blog that did the same. If I could just find that alpha teen who will tell a thousand people to read my book...
