I like TirzahLaughs idea the best. Kind of like that cook-off show where the contestants are given an often weird list of ingredients from which they have to make dishes.

Thanks, Rhiannon. Would you be smoking it in the nude, perchance? smile

Thanks, Randy. I'm not sure how many TNBW members have been reading it but not finished, so I just wanted them to know the book would be taken off site in a little over a month from now.

The publisher has informed me the release date for my novel, When the Reaper Comes, will be Nov. 4. I'll leave it up on site until then for those who want to finish it for free. smile

The story above that one, concerning a class action lawsuit against Harlequin, was also to your point. And it speaks to one reason why self-publishing has grown. Major publishers and agents who don't give newbies much of a chance to get their feet in the door, and publishers, once they've signed you, who screw you over - it's no wonder self-publishing has taken off. And it's not just new authors who have taken this route. Some well-established writers have ditched their publishers in return for total control of their products.

FYI re Doubleday/Knopf accepting unsolicited manuscripts - it doesn't. Agents only, dudes. It's on their website.

Thanks, Dags! I'm fortunate to have found a publisher who is easy to work with - and likes my books! Great combination! smile  You and the other writers at TNBW who have critiqued my stories are largely responsible for that. Which is why I'll continue to workshop all of my novels here.

You (and my brother-in-law) dodged that bullet, Nathan. We got a day of soaking rain, but we're drying up now. Sunday and Monday will be sunny (and hot again!).

The rain has arrived, but not the wind -yet. Thanks, Dags.

For those who have been reading WTRC but have not finished it, no need to leave reviews. The MS has been through the editing process at the publisher, so I can't make changes now even if I wanted to. smile But I'll leave the novel on site for a while longer to let current readers finish it if they want.

Truth be told, Vern, as someone who has seen "Deliverance" a number of times, I'd just as soon not be looking for them thar hollers.

I think the hollers are in West Virginey or Kaintuck, Vern, but I take your point. Segregating writers on the basis of geography, unless it's just for fun or kinship, doesn't sit right with me. Still like to get feedback on any Vermonters out there, though.

Put your money where your mouth is, Randy. Become the founder of the OM group, and I'll be the founder of the Tar Heel group. Hell, I don't know if there are any North Carolina writers in TNBW. But I'm pretty sure there aren't any Vermonters among us. (Prove me wrong, peeps!)

Actually, I had my tongue in my cheek when posting that, but what the hey? Maybe Ann had a good idea going.

I see a new group has been started - Texas Writers. Well, I'm not going to lie there and take it! How about starting a group of North Carolina writers? Or Vermont writers? Maybe Washington State, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey writers? (I qualify for all of them.) Shoot, we could get the whole dang country divided up into writing cliques on this site. Kinda reminds me of those caucus things they have in Congress. Anyone interested in joining a NCVWPN Writers group? Or should we divide that up into its constituent parts? I could be a moderator, or you could (preferably, since I already have a group - that's state-neutral.) We could get some competition goin'. Texas vs. all the other state groups. Like the Ryder Cup. Whoo-ee!

Regarding the above, as an example, three of my books today rose several thousand ranks each. (Amazon claims to update this figure hourly.) But I'm not expecting big royalty checks as a result. sad

Unless you self-publish, only the publisher gets sales numbers from Amazon. Amazon rank is indicative of sales in a general way, but not specific. If your ranking climbs, you know that's because of a sales increase, but a rise of several thousand in rank may only translate to a couple of books sold. I don't think your idea is workable, Sol. And I don't really see the point, as it would create an irrelevant competition among TNBW published authors who write in various genres and use various promotion discounts.

Sol, none of my books are on the list: Get the Picture?, The Side Effect, The Flame, The Sincerest Form of Flattery, Skeleton Run (workshopped here as Teammates), and How Little We Know.
