It's because you put line breaks into Notepad. Those line breaks are translated into line breaks on the site.

To fix it, you need to go into Notepad  and make each paragraph a single line. Once you do that, you can paste it back onto the site and it will correct.

If you have Works on your computer that might help. You can paste it into that and it should help make the corrections easier.

Hi Janet,

What word processor did you paste the story from?

Dragging didn't work for chapters. But you can reorder them by clicking on the chapter number on the left column. Have you tried that? The number is actually an action link.

I might give this a shot. Sounds like fun. How will you be publishing this? In ebook or paperback?

If you put up a pic with your group, I'll post the announcement on the site's Facebook page.

Interesting article. My take is that poetry is more ubiquitous than ever, being embedded in songs, commercials, books, and more. I also think the chart on Google searches is not representative as people have changed how they search online. What do you think?

Default to X-display makes sense.

If enough members tell me they like the X-line view more than we can make it the default.

No, we haven't disabled it and I'm not sure we will.

Also, when I add a response comment inline from within the x-line tab, it doesn't show on the page unless I reload it.

That's correct. You will need to reload the page if you comment on the x-line tab page.

There's a cache issue. You can refresh your cache by clicking ctrl-f5 together if you don't see the x-lines. We're also working on fixing this from our end.

Try it again. Try clicking ctrl-f5 if you still have problems. If it still doesn't work let me know.

Hi all,

I wanted to let you know we released version 2 of the in-line review functionality today. There are two features which I think you will find useful:

1. X-lines. Now, when you open an in-line review, you will see another tab called x-line. When you click on this, all of the in-line comments given will show, opened, within the body of the content. This eliminates the need to go through and click on every comment to read the in-line reviews and they responses to those reviews. This page will also allow us to create a print-friendly page which we will be adding in the next couple of days.

2. In-line numbers. On both the in-line tab and the x-line tab you will see numbers next to the highlighted text. This tells you how many comments are attached to that highlighted text. So now if someone adds a new comment you can quickly see where it has been added.

3. Video and images. I don't k now how many people will use this feature, but you can now also attach images or videos to your in-line reviews if you want to refer to another source to make a point or show something from a video.

I hope these features make in-line reviews an even more helpful tool in the reviewing and editing process. We'll continue to listen to your feedback so that we can make TheNextBigWriter the Premium community for helping you improve your work and reach your writing goals.

Thanks,
Sol

I am a member of several different groups. I usually post my manuscript to all of them at once by making sure the little boxes are checked. From time to time I have updated a chapter to reflect changes I have made after a review. However, I must be short cutting part of the process. I keep getting reviews back that show some the old mistakes I intended to correct. I would appreciate any response if you have some idea about what I need to be doing. This is an intermediate step. I will post an other draft later that can be re-review for points later.

I advise you to check your actual content and see if the changes you are making are being saved. As long as you change the manuscript and then hit the Next button at the bottom of the page, it should be saving them.

I have just tried to mass-delete a few old messages. Clicking the "check all below" box puts checkmarks into each of the listed messages on that page, but clicking the Trash Can (and answering the faded-screen pop-up with YES), none of them went away. They still remain. I am reduced to deleting each one of them separately and getting that blacked-out screen every time. A massive PITA.
Is this by design, or a bug?

Hi Tom, I just tested it and it worked fine. My guess is that based on the problems you are having your browser does not play nice with the site.

Hi, Sol. I just got another email concerning your "Show versus Tell" class. Every one of them including this one, reports "Not Authorized". If I'm not authorized, why am I getting them?

Are you signed up for the class? I don't think so. If not, you shouldn't be receiving the messages. I will look into it.

I've posted 2 or 3 long reviews (400+ words) and the last parts of the reviews were truncated.  Shorter reviews seem to be no problem. What gives? And, how can I make sure that complete review are posted in the future?
The complete review is still visible if I click back to the review page, therefore I know that the full review existed in the first place.

Can you message me with an example of a truncated review. Thanks.

I think this is still the case, JP, only premium members have access to in-line reviews and new members by default are not premium members, they have to upgrade.
edit - correct me if I'm wrong Sol!

New members have 7 days of Writing Membership (formerly Premium) to try the site and all of its features. After 7 days they become Basic members and do not have access to in-line reviews.

Once again the editing problem hit me. I was filling in a regular review and my keyboard began either missing strokes or giving me multiple strokes as I typed. I immediately went outside my browser and opened a text window to finish my review. No problems typing at all. Then I went back into the text box and tried again - same results: dropping various characters no matter how definitively (read HIT) the keys, they wouldn't register. It is not my keyboard, it is inside an editing box.~Tommmm
(Case in point - this post. My "M" key gave me multiple "m's" and the "Return" key failed.)

This is something related to your browser as I have not heard of any other complaints about this behavior or been able to duplicate it. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Okay! My message icon is missing. Help! It's in my drop down, but not on the top of the page. There is now ? in its place.

We put a Help button in its place because the message icon was a bit redundant. You can access your messages from the drop-down under your pen name.

The use of the back/ forward buttons is inconsistent.  I was happy to see I could use them, and did, but they don't work from every page.  I gave up trying.    Now if I have a lot to say, I have to compose on my own computer and paste to the message box, which still doesn't solve the problem, but at least I don't have to redo things.  Till now, I've assumed it was a problem of my own.  JP

This has to do with your browser settings and how it handles a page. If it caches a page then you can go back, if not, then you may need to reload it. We use different technologies on different pages which is why the back button works in some cases but not in others. Depending on the browser you are using, make sure you are not reloading the page fresh on every page visit. That should resolve the problem.

There it goes again. My review, when I posted it, told me I'd written 61 words. When I went back to look at the response, my post was listed at 57 words. Why the disparity?

There may be different counting systems in use. I'll have to look into this.

Please send billing questions  to me directly. The forum is not a place to discuss individual billing issues.

Members who were paid members prior to the conversion should receive the grandfathered pricing. If you haven't, let me know and I'll look into why and resolve it.

Hi Mike,

We'll be announcing the winners soon in the forum.

Sol

Hi Mike,

I'm glad you found it helpful!

Sol

The developers of Quill and many others are already predicting similar and more advanced AI will soon be able to construct stories as good as any human author.

I'll have to check Quill out. I find it hard to believe that a computer could construct a logical story. I've been thinking of ways to disassemble a story so that it's construction could be automated and it is not easy. There are some broad patterns but every sentence is unique and must fit together with the once before and after it. Still, who knows?
