Topic: Hello, I'm new (hist fiction writer)

I'm T Mitchell and I just became a member. Have loaded some chapters but need to earn points for reviews so that I can publish my stuff. I'm writing an historical fiction novel and looking for good books to review in any category. Where should I start? Anybody out there reading this wanna help me out?

Re: Hello, I'm new (hist fiction writer)

Welcome to TNBW, Tonya.

Loads of very good authors on this site. Just jump in and read a few chapters that interest you.  I started on short stories by reading what others said in their reviews as guidance. Once you get a few reviews done, it'll come much easier.

Welcome, Tonya! I'm not trolling for reviews, but if you want reciprocation for your stuff, you'll get it by reviewing my stuff! smile What period in history does your story encompass? Characters in pre-1980s' stories make it tough for writers addicted to cell phone conversations to move plots along quickly. So I'm always interested in reading about life before modern technology.  Jack

Tonya: be very welcome. I tried to check your material but I found nothing posted so far. I'm not sure if I'm the right person to review hist fiction. It all depends on the era--it's not the same ancient Rome than XIX century England. That's why I wanted to take a look at your material before offering my help, but I couldn't find anything published.

Anyway, it's nice you've joined. There are fabulous people at TNBW. It's nice you've just become one of them.

Hi, Gacela.

Tonya noted that she had nothing posted because she needed points. Once she does a couple of revies, I bet we see a post or two.

Welcome, T!

I have loads of stuff on here and you're welcome to read any and all. If you want a really good historical fiction, read Rebecca Vaughn. Note that Rebecca is dyslexic and you will see that in her writing, but her stories are more than worth helping her find her transpositions and such.

Mariana: I just did a few reviews and earned enough points to post my prologue! So it's there now. Take a look. My period is NYC, late 1880's: horse cars, newspapers, and an insane asylum. If that's intriguing, give me a shout.

Re: Hello, I'm new (hist fiction writer)

Tom,
My era is late 1880's New York. Journalism, horse cars, and a strong heroine who agrees to be committed to an insane asylum to get a job in the man's world of newspaper reporting. Give me a shout if that sounds compelling at all. What do you write?

Re: Hello, I'm new (hist fiction writer)

Second on the recommendation for Rebecca Vaugn's stories.

They sound a little early for you, but they won't waste your time.  Look around, find writers you're comfortable with.  With luck, they'll be comfortable with you and you can reciprocate reviews.  That's part of the ettiquette here: recip when you can, and if you feel you really, really, cannot help another writer because of the style differences, apologize for not being able to recip.  Of course, the other writer may enjoy your story so much s/he continues to review!

Oh, try Amy_s's short stories.   They're so good I have almost nothing to say about them.

Re: Hello, I'm new (hist fiction writer)

Tonya, I just read your prologue! It rocks. I am sooooooooooooooooo on board.

Re: Hello, I'm new (hist fiction writer)

I've just read it also, Tonya.  Fantastic piece of work.

Thank you Janet and Tom. You have made my day wink

I concur, really great writing I've enjoyed reviewing them this morning.  I'm in 1840's at the moment...

Dunecan, just sent you via private messages a great resource on NYC. Plenty in this book to get you immersed in the 1840's. It's chock-full of all kinds of information wink
