Topic: Valentine plans

Out of curiosity, who plans to go see 50 Shades of Grey on Valentine's Day?

Re: Valentine plans

Not on Valentine's day or any other day... Not even sure I'll watch it on dvd. Maybe tele when it gets there, but only if it keeps me awake. smile

Re: Valentine plans

Probably not. I couldn't finish the first book.

Re: Valentine plans

Tom, the same reason I can't be bothered!

Janet, are you planning to see the movie at some point?

Re: Valentine plans

I won't be seeing the movie. Love romance, but 50 shades doesn't qualify as romance for me.

This review has been circulating on FB; I thought it interesting and insightful:

Re: Valentine plans

I don't have any real interest in it. But my daughter & I MIGHT catch a matinee. I refuse to pay full price to see it. I hated the books.

Re: Valentine plans

Okay, after reading that review--I REFUSE TO GO SEE THIS. And I will not subject my daughter to something so encouraging of staying in a pit of hell.

I just read it also, Janet. I am appalled at something like this could ever make the screen, much less be billed as a 'great film'.

Re: Valentine plans

I didn't need a review. Just the synopsis of the plot was enough for me. What people don't understand is BSM is an ALTERNATIVE LIFESTYLE. It's not like being Gay, you aren't born wanting to be bound and hurt during sex, or emotionally abused by someone you love. It's a choice.

BSM never interested me so I didn't buy the book and I'm not going see the movie.

What's really strange is the reaction of my hometown REPUBLICAN leaning newspaper, who got upset over Gay marriage, but was VERY excited Fifty Shades was coming to town. It seems they would rather see women dominated and humiliated by a male rather than allow two people in love make a commitment  to each other.

I'm just waiting for all the accident death, maiming, and irreversible comas due to being deprived of oxygen cases to come out of this sadistic sexual practice making its way into pop culture.

sad

Re: Valentine plans

I would say that the reaction to the movie would be the same as to the books.  Mixed.  For every review against, there will be another for.  So I'm getting ready for the same hoo-hah, again.

Although, I think more women who loved the books will not like the movie.  For one, I don't think a flesh and blood guy would be able to meet all of the women's imaginations, so some would be disappointed just because of that.  Then, the movie won't be exactly like the books (which, is always the case when a book is made into a movie, but in this case, we're dealing with hormonal women) - turn off.  And apparently the movie doesn't go all out like the books.  Oh dear.

So I'm getting my popcorn to read some comments again.

The little I've seen on news websites (you know those little summaries to get you to read the whole article), it mentioned you'd see all of her, yet, the guy won't show his bits.  Not that I want to see guy bits, but what's good for the geese and all of that ....  So yeah, it would seem that the imbalance in their relationship has made it completely onto screen.

Re: Valentine plans

Janet, The movies would have to better than the books. They were awful.

Tom, I've seen some movies that were very well acted but the story or premise was appalling--Leaving Las Vegas was for me although Nicholas Cage did a great job. This one may well be well acted and directed, but the subject is what really leaves me agog. And the fact that many young women will flock to this and see it as okay to let yourself be abused.
