Topic: Published or unpublished?

I was looking at submission guidelines for several periodicals, and came across this phrase: "We do not consider previously published work, which includes work published on any website."  Does "any website" include workshop sites like TNBW?  Does the fact that the site calls a work "published" make it so?

Re: Published or unpublished?

General rule of thumb is if it's password protected, not available to the general public and can't be googled...then it's not considered published.

So TNBW work is not published because your work is not available to general public readers without logging in.
HOwever if you sign a publishing contract, they will often require you pull it from critique sites as well.

Great answer Tirz. And true, JP.

Re: Published or unpublished?

Tirz is right on target, but some contests (Faulkner) do consider TNBW as published if there are more than 500 readers. They say a "work in its entirety." But because of their view, I have pulled everything I've ever submitted to them just to be sure.
