Topic: Be Back Tonight Or Tomorrow

Hi Everyone ...

As most of you know, I've been away for a couple of months. My wife's medical condition continues to decline and, recently, at a more rapid rate. I've been totally exhausted from providing the care she needs on a continuing basis. It's what I have to do to keep her out of a nursing home. She begged me to promise her that I would do everything in my power to make sure of that, and I did make her thatr promise. She watched both of her grandmothers wither away in a nursing home with poor care and little attention. I will do everything in my power to honor that commitment

For practical purposes, she is bedbound Her medical treatment team put in a request for a special exception to our insurance company to pay for home nursing. Surprisingly, they approved it! So, sometime next month, that process will begin. I won't bore you with the details, but it will take a tremendous load off my shoulders.

I've written very little lately other than tightening up a novel I started posting here several years ago:  "Death Watch".  So for the next week or so, I'll simply be reading and reviewing as much as I can.

I'm closing in on 80 years old and still in very good health - at least that allows me to care for her - the most important thing.

Looking forward to cruising the hallways of TNBW with all of you fine writers!

Alan

PS: I bought a brand new, very expensive laptop. Four days after I had it, it was hacked and all my email accounts and passwords for most sites were blocked from me. I had to call all my credit card companies, bank, mortgage company, etc. That's been a real PIA. I'm setting up a new email account, which I will post here. I'm locked out of all my previous emails.

Re: Be Back Tonight Or Tomorrow

Both my children have promised me they will do the same for me and/or my wife. Having had this close-up view of the level of assistance given to those who have been forced into care homes, and will never leave under their own steam, I do not wish to come here again. I am over 80 (soon to be 82) and my health has improved greatly since the bypass. I hope both my wife and I continue in relatively good health now that we've reached out 60th year of marriage.

A big round of applause to your healthcare insurance, Alan. A huge improvement over some companies I can name.

Re: Be Back Tonight Or Tomorrow

Hi Alan. It's great to hear from you, although I wish the news was better. I was my mother's caregiver for a few years, both before and after she went into a care home. The care home staff took over the heavy lifting, leaving me free to help in other ways to keep up her spirits (e.g., running errands and buying things she wanted or needed). It was definitely a stressful time.

I'm glad you're in good health. Few people in my family make it that far, especially the males. I suspect my own biological age is 5-10 years greater than my chronological age. Isaac Asimov was once asked what he would do if he learned he only had a year to live. His answer: write faster!

All my best to you and your family.

Re: Be Back Tonight Or Tomorrow

Thanks, Dirk. It;'s good to be back. But the halls of TNBW aren't very crowded these days. Good for you for doing your part regarding your mother's care. My mother lived to be 90, and her mother made it to 99. So I might be around to irritate a lot more people before I'm gone!

Hi Bill,

It's great to know your health is improving after your surgery. And it's terrific they found the issue in time to address it. And 60 years of marriage is almost unheard of these days - congrats!

I'm only four years behind you. I had my annual physical back in March. My doc said I was healthier than most of his 45 year-old patients. And I don't feel much different than I did at 45. I was gifted with the best medical genes from both my parents.

Here's wishing you and your wife continued good health for a long time.

Hope you make it to 100!

Re: Be Back Tonight Or Tomorrow

Hi, Randy.

Do you think you'll be able to tolerate me that long?

Good luck on your move to South Carolina. i remember you mentioning that to me on our last PM. I hope you and Sylvia find significant happiness there. Wishing both of you nothing but the very best.

I'll be over this evening to revisit "Mission Yeman". I'll pick up where I left off and try to catch up over the next week or so. I remember how much I liked your character, Shatara.

Take care,

Alan
