Topic: Chapter names or not?

I'm looking for opinions on the topic of chapter names. Is it better to give a chapter a name, in addition to its number, such as: Chapter 10: Girl Meets Boy? Or is it better to go with simply the chapter number? Or just the chapter name?

Also.....when numbering chapters: Roman or Arabic numerals?

What say you?

Re: Chapter names or not?

I don't think it makes a hill of beans whether you give chapters names or not for a product ready for publishing -- perhaps different story on this site. I put chapter names in my novel on this site for additional description about the chapter topic, but do not have them in my master draft. I feel that on site perhaps a possible reviewer might get some inkling of whether to continue reviewing that next chapter but when/if a person buys the book they are probably not going to be influenced by chapter names. Just my opinion. Take care. Vern

PS: Type numbers? Who cares.

Re: Chapter names or not?

The answer to your first question depends on whether you can make the chapter names important, such as a hook, a little misdirection, or foreshadowing (e.g., The Emperor's Fate). I would definitely include a chapter number, otherwise people have to remember what chapter name they were on when they last read from the book. Given that you probably have dozens of chapters, I would use Arabic.

Re: Chapter names or not?

For light fare (most genre fiction), I don’t find names helpful.  I find it distracting and a little presumptuous.  The exceptions might be humorous fiction and loose or episodic narratives.

For heavier fare, such as literary fiction with complex narratives and historical fiction, I find chapter titles helpful reference points (especially if the novel is long and has multiple plot lines.)

Some food for thought from an article at nybookeditors (emphasis is mine)

“There are three major benefits to titling your chapters.

Titles provide hints of what to expect within the chapter. Your title can motivate the reader to continue pushing through the novel to see what will happen next.

Titles provide easy reference points for the reader. Some readers like to refer back to an incident that happened earlier in the novel. Titles can serve as useful reference points.

Titles define and differentiate one chapter from the next. Sometimes, chapters blend together. Titles can help to distinguish and provide a small glimpse into the purchase of each chapter.

While titles may be natural for some novels, it can be jarring or disruptive for others. Use your writer’s discretion when coming up with a title for your chapters and, if you don’t feel good about the titles you’ve chosen, simply use numbers instead.

I include chapter names when I post on TNBW but they are eliminated by the time I submit my manuscripts. I use natural numbers for chapters.
