Topic: Any medical folks about?

I'm looking for a disease I can use in my story. Ideally an inflammatory disease that causes you to cough up blood and which becomes progressively worse with time, albeit with some days better than others. It doesn't need to be fatal, but bonus points if it is. If it causes or worsens inflammation of the skin, too, Santa will bring you rum cake at Christmas.

If such a disease doesn't exist, well, it should. I'll have to make one up. Feel free to suggest names.

Thanks
Dirk

Re: Any medical folks about?

Lung cancer

Goodpasture syndrome

Valley fever -- rash involved

Take care. Dr. Vern

PS: A google search will produce more, but if you need specific symptoms you should just make up your own "newly discovered" disease.

Re: Any medical folks about?

The first thing that comes to mind is tuberculosis. It can also infect the kidneys, which totally screws up blood chemistry, especially potassium. Lots of nasty things can happen with hyperkalemia (high potassium.)

Thromo-embolism can cause coughing up blood. (hymoptysis). Others that come to mind are COPD and bronchiectasis.

Do a search for 'hymoptysis inflammatory disease' and you should get plenty of nasty conditions to choose from.

Re: Any medical folks about?

Thanks, all. It doesn't look like there's a disease that involves generalized inflammation that, as it progresses, leads to coughing up of blood and causes/worsens inflammation of the skin (and maybe other organs). I checked out all of your suggestions, but they're not close enough to what I need. There is such a thing as chronic low-level inflammation, which can affect the whole body, but it doesn't progress to increasingly severe inflammation. Instead, it leads to heart attacks and strokes, among other health problems. I think I'll go with systemic inflammation (somewhere between chronic and acute). The exact cause will be a mystery until the end of book one.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Re: Any medical folks about?

Okay, good to see that one’s successfully solved.  Now, to stay obliquely on topic—I was reading an article recently in the New England Journal of Medicine about this newly identified neurological disorder called CDP (Chronic Debilitating Pedantry).  They’re treating it with electro-shock therapy and an experimental cocktail concocted from Absolut, clomipramine, and ground-up red Skittles.  It’s shown promise so far, and is going into the final phase of clinical trials.  They are looking for volunteers.  Know anyone overly punctilious who’d be interested in being a guinea pig?

Re: Any medical folks about?

Temple, ground up Skittles?  I’d volunteer if they were using Hershey kisses.

Not Temple!  You can’t be serious, Vern.

I was just curious; most folks are serious about their chocolate, lol. Take care. Vern

Re: Any medical folks about?

Well, Vern, you’re right about chocolate.  Dark’s the best but I have been known to go slumming.
