Topic: Posting Stories and feedback

Hello Everyone,
I'm very new here as a writer and as a member.  I have posted my first chapter and have gotten some very helpful feedback.  My question is: for my second posting should I post the revised version of my first chapter or chapter 2 of my story?

Thanks ,
Pat

Re: Posting Stories and feedback

Hi, Pat and welcome to TNBW. How you handle your stories is pretty much up to you.

If you're like me, I like a complete run-through my entire story before I go back, edit, and repost anything. Others will do as you first suggest, posting a chapter, edit, and post the same chapter. I tried that when I was new, but I found that I posted the same chapter three times before moving on. Each time I posted the chapter, I received ideas that I wanted to meld into my story.  If I hadn't moved on, I would have remained on that first chapter for a long time.

Re: Posting Stories and feedback

Welcome, Pat! Everyone here has their own way of incorporating helpful suggestions into their posts. Unlike Bill, I like to edit as close to the time of the review as I can manage, so the chapter reflects the changes made very soon, but I don't re-post that chapter. New reviewers will see the edited chapter when they come across it. I do it this way, rather than do a complete edit upon completion, because I find the latter to be too laborious, and subject to missing things that came up in reviews weeks, if not months, earlier. Another advantage is that you won't be spending points to re-post that chapter. But to each his/her own. Good luck with your project!  Jack

Welcome, Pat!

Both great suggestions from Jack the Knife and Bill. I've found myself following similar processes and you'll sort out what works best for you.
Good luck with your WIP and enjoy meeting new friends on this site. Regards, Randy

Re: Posting Stories and feedback

Too late to modify my last post so I'll just add that I do immediately edit any suggestions/corrections on the current chapter, but I don't post it again until the entire novel is finished.

Thanks to everyone,

You have given good advice and I think that I will edit as I go, but post a new chapter.

Re: Posting Stories and feedback

I do both. When I posted the previous version of my novel, I was still exploring where I was going with the story, and the feedback reflected the fact that I would need to make major changes, so I soon gave up trying to make the changes on the fly. For my final draft, the suggested changes are mostly minor and I'm making those as soon as they come in, then I copy and paste those changes from MS Word into my online version chapter. I only re-post a chapter using points if it involves major changes and I want the same reviewers to look at it again, otherwise I just edit over the existing online version of the chapter and carry on.

Re: Posting Stories and feedback

Hi Norm, thanks for posting this: "I just edit over the existing online version of the chapter and carry on" I didn't realize you could do this.  I will try it.

Re: Posting Stories and feedback

One of the nice things about editing over the existing chapter is that those who haven't reviewed it yet will still receive points for doing so. The advantage of reposting is that everyone receives points and your posted work reappears on everyone's home page.

If you repost, increment the version number for the new chapter, and hide the previous version, unless you want reviewers to see both. You can also delete the previous version, but then you lose all of the reviews associated with it (I think).

The good thing about making the changes as early as possible is you don't keep getting the same errors pointed out by the ones who come in later.  With me, I post a chapter, make changes suggested by our great reviewers on here, but then go ahead and post the next chapter when it's ready.  You will find your rhythm and what works best for you.

Glad to have you on board, Pat.  Welcome again.  Good luck with your story.

Hi Marilyn,
I just made some changes that you suggested.  Thank you so much. It does read smoother. I'm so glad I joined this group.
Everyone has been so helpful.
