Topic: Questions about re-posting a novel

Starting today, I will be republishing my novel You Only Love Twice. There are quite a few reviews attached to the current version (0), and the changes I've made sometimes significantly alter a given chapter. It is also quite possible that I will create additional chapters that fit between two chapters of the original novel. In order to keep things from getting out of hand, do I:

1) simply update the version number to 1, add my changes, and publish? (Even if the chapter is a completely new one and displaces what was originally there?)

or

2) Start another novel with the same name + (V1) and add chapters as I go. At the same time, "hide" those chapters previously released?

I also need to know that if I do (1) above, will I be charged additional points to publish the altered chapter? I have over 1000 points, so that isn't a problem to do either one of my choices. I think that simply re-publishing a new thread of chapters would be the "cleaner" way to go.

Any help here?

Re: Questions about re-posting a novel

Hi, Tom. I have the same issue. I chose to create two books, Into the Mind of God (for v2) and Into the Mind of God v3 (for v3+). I will be deleting some chapters and adding new ones as I proceed with v3, which will throw off the chapter count, creating a discontinuity between old and new chapters, if someone were to read based on chapter numbers alone. Naturally, you could make it work if you hide all of the old chapters and then proceed to publish your new chapters as you write/finish them. Republishing will cause the new chapters to show up in the list of new books available to everyone on their homes pages, so they can see the new content and go read it for points. Simply editing the old chapters to overwrite the existing content will not require points, but then your new material won't show up under new books.

Also, in my case, I want to leave the old version up (for stragglers to finish) and concurrently publish new chapters for new readers, without confusing both groups of readers. Therefore I used two books. Once everyone is done reading v2, I plan to take it down (make them inactive). That way, I can keep the old reviews for reference as I write v3. Two books also means I don't have to deal with a confusing list of new and old chapters intermingled in the same list under the site's publish feature.

Hope that helps.
Dirk

Re: Questions about re-posting a novel

That does indeed help, Dirk. I was leaning in that direction already, but your reasoning is sound. I also have a couple of new chapters to introduce near the end, and they would throw off the chapter count. I'll wait until this afternoon before I make a final decision. I want to start the new year off right with my novel. I also like the fact that republishing would put it up as "new" to everyone. That was one of my main concerns - getting it out there that I'd revised the novel.

Re: Questions about re-posting a novel

Look forward to reading the revised story, Tom!

Re: Questions about re-posting a novel

Virtually every chapter is now around 2100-2600 words, so I've added a lot - mostly dialogue, but also some more cultural tidbits and scenery descriptions.

Re: Questions about re-posting a novel

Hi Tom,

I agree with the advice you've been given. I'd republish it as a new book. I think that's the cleanest way to go.

Re: Questions about re-posting a novel

Thanks, Sol. That's what I did a little while ago. It's out there now.

Re: Questions about re-posting a novel

This is helpful to me as well.  Do you think being a beginner, I should do the second book idea? I have received a lot of helpful reviews.  How do I keep the in-line edits up and edit my book at the same time?  Another question: Should I write my whole book. then re-write or re-write as I go with each chapter.  My book has a lot of gaps. My first version seems to be just an outline or ideas. Much to do. Thank you, Nita

This could be a whole thread on its own. In my opinion, I'd write the entire first draft and then go back and edit. Too many great ideas have died because the writer never gets past editing the first couple of chapters. Get the idea out, then go back and edit. Welcome!

Re: Questions about re-posting a novel

Cobber's suggestion is a good one, Nita. Even when I write short stories, I create a whole outline and then go back and fill it in. For a novel, I might put a short paragraph on what I want to accomplish in a given chapter and move on the the next one. Once I get most of the novel in shape, then I flesh out chapters and being posting the first draft.

So very helpful, Thank you Tom and Cobbler.  Moving forward, Nita

Re: Questions about re-posting a novel

Nita, I tried to keep my chapters up to date, but found I kept editing the same old stuff over and over as new ideas crept in, some of which I subsequently abandoned. I gave up at the end of act 1 (1/4 of the way into the book) and just started writing. If someone's feedback gave me a great idea, I would usually incorporate it from then on, and I would use the chapter summaries to note what changes I was introducing going forward (i.e., here's what's different, pretend it was always there). If a new idea was particularly complex, I deferred it entirely to the next draft.

Re: Questions about re-posting a novel

I tried to post the revised Prologue to my novel. I made sure it was version 5, as opposed to version 3. The new Prologue had about 2K more words, so it could definitely not be confused with ver3. However, when I published it and checked the link to the posting on the Home page, it linked to version 3. I could not fix it, so I just made version 3 unavailable. So, the version 5 (most recent) Prologue is the only one available for reviewers.

I think this bug is something specific to the Prologue, or chapter 0. Just putting this out there so people make sure the revised chapter being posted is linked correctly on the Home page. I haven't heard of anyone else having an issue similar to this, so it may just be me. Or my little Prologue.

Re: Questions about re-posting a novel

Thanks for asking this Tom. I've been beating some sense into Prunella and she'll return in all her inept android glory in a new iteration. If I recall correctly, the old site had versioning... Or was it virgining? Can't wait to roll Aphrodite's Rainbow again. And, I can't wait to read a revised version of  U O L 2x.

Re: Questions about re-posting a novel

Excellent, Max! What a wild ride Prunella gave us all. Looking happily forward to more of her antics.

Re: Questions about re-posting a novel

Today I started re-publishing my novel: Changed to Book I Francisco and White Dove.  This may have been asked before, but I didn't get it.  Should I delete or Hide chapters on the first version as I complete them?  Nita

Re: Questions about re-posting a novel

That depends on how you want to have your chapters reviewed. If you leave the old ones up, then someone can go back to the previous review and see what changes were made. There is nothing wrong with taking previous chapters down either. I usually go on a chapter by chapter basis. As I post a new one, I hide the earlier one. I can still see them to check if I've acted on reviewers, but nobody else can.

OK, great.  Sounds logical.  Thanks again Tom
