Topic: Surprising Definitions

I have always been fascinated by words that "evolve" through the ages and through languages. Today I came across a familiar word that had quite an intriguing alternative definition. Dictionary.com classifies the definition as "Archaic".

One word that has a reverse use from its old dictionary definition --- Redact. Redact is defines as: to highlight or frame. In present usage it means to cover over or remove.

Not quite on topic, but you might enjoy An Exultation of Larks.

A writer of the time called Christopher Wren's then-new St. Paul's Cathedral "both artificial and awful."  In the usage of the time, it was high praise.

You should have heard the hoots from my students when we read Shaw's Pygmalion and the maid referred to Eliza's "slutty" ways. Of course, the usage of the day meant messy or dirty.
