K, this is for you.
I'm cross-posting here for you, Amy:
Words to write by, According to Hoyt. (Please note especially #2, and realize that You Also Don't Know What Doesn't ...)
Sending you a big virtual hug, Amy! I hope I can read all your stories here soon.
I'm back on track for a week or so. Maybe two. Keep up the chatter and talk about books, books, books!
I've been tied up, but finding time for reviews. The next three to four days will be a problem.
I'm all caught up on Dictates of Faith. Waiting for more. Bzzt!
Also, I finally settled on Warheads Et Cetera, Inc., as the replacement for Acme. Plus a whole bunch of changes from your review, Amy.
Also started reading the Pendragon books by Rebecca Vaughn.
I'm now trying to figure out if Joseph is Catholic or Protestant. He's going to talk with Elder Amos about everything going on in his head, and I'm trying to decide if it should be a confession. If he's Catholic, then where is the Pope in my universe? Still on Imperial Earth? I'll probably make him Protestant to avoid the issue, which means I need to rename the maid droid, Rosary. Minor stuff.
There have been popes and anti-popes. Once there were three claimants.
You cuold also have a Catholic/Orthodox spilt.
I have a loose coalition of different Christian churches led by "elders," to support and minister to the poor. I was hoping to avoid the specifics of any one church being supreme on New Bethlehem. The Royal Family would probably be of the dominant faith, though. I do document that the planet was founded by descendants of the followers of Reverend "Bombast," a televangelist, which I tend to equate with American Protestants or Evangelicals. The common denominator on the planet is that they tend to be conservative Christians, although not necessarily Fundamentalists.
Then have a bunch, with mutual respecrt on practical matters, but continual squabbling on the translation of phrases, with differences that have no practical effect at all.
It's not an area I want to explore right now. My purpose in choosing a Christian denomination for Joseph is primarily one of how to unfold the scene where he confides in Elder Amos everything that's going on inside him. Protestant is the most practical, otherwise I have to get into the Pope/Vatican, which would be a distraction for this book. I can explore the different faith groups if I write a sequel to this book.
If you go with evangelical, then I see the origin as Siuthern Baptist. Something judgmental, and anti-LBGT. It would explain the church's willingness to wage war, at least in my mind.
Honestly, I would keep making it up to avoid offending somebody. It is just as easy to get your point across with made-up radicals
War? They're simply defending their planet from the Imperium.
Nevertheless, I don't plan to name his denomination. I was just trying to decide if I needed a confessional. And if I need to rename Rosary, the palace droid. No to the former, yes to the latter.
There seem to be a lot of different names for a place in a church where Elder Amos and Joseph can go for a chat after services. The vestry is too busy with the choir changing out of their robes. Some churches have a parlor. Others have an attached living area. It's Amazing Grace Cathedral (the grandest church in Eden, where the Royal Family worships), so I'm not sure I want a living area attached to it. Sitting area? A study?
Like you said, I'll make something up.
Question: can one notice one surroundings while lost in thought? I've got Joseph lost in thought, but am describing his surroundings...
Technically, if you follow njc's definition, you don't think about where you are, what you're wearing, who's next to you, what building you're in, etc. Nevertheless, I went with thoughts swirling.
I don't think it's a matter of whether or not you think about it, but rather if you are aware of it. I know what clothes I put on this morning, so of course I don't actively think about it throughout the day, but I'm still aware of it. On the other hand, if a character is "lost in thought", they probably aren't aware of hardly anything at all. Like when you're walking down the street, then suddenly realize you've gone three blocks without even noticing. In that scenario, I wouldn't describe any of the surroundings except at the beginning and at the end of those three blocks.
I hope that makes sense. I'm surviving on a serious lack of brain cells today.
salon, waiting room, drawing room, reception
And I agree with NJC. Keep the first person intensive perspective.
Reception room, banquet hall, conference room(s).
naming the room is a short cut
OK, I managed to post another chapter.
Battered but weary, I'm still back. Here is an update on the cancer front.
Chemo #1 is over with. Day 13 and 14 are definitely easier as the medication effects wear off. I'm maintaining my weight, which is predictable because I've always been able to eat past common sense, so what is different about this, anyway? Chemo #2 starts Monday, with a pump that I wear for 48 hours afterwards. I'm like an old pro at this (not) but at least I have one experience under my belt so I'll be able to predict (somewhat) what my next three experiences will be like.
I still have my hair. Not for long, but I'm getting ready to whack it off and start wearing a pussy hat (google it for educational purposes)
Today was a good day. Went to a local waterpark and then took my sister, nephew, and best friend to dinner afterwards. Then of course, my 6 year old exhausts himself and starts running a fever, but whatever. It was still a good day.
At work, my absence is being noticed and I've never felt more appreciated. Six weeks into this mess, and we're still getting dinners cooked for us. Should anyone care to come over, I have at least two months worth of leftovers in my freezer.
An open invitation is available to youz all. Should you care to appear, July 3rd is my children's 'fake birthday with fireworks' party and you would be welcome to indulge in a random act of whimsy by driving my direction and appearing. I promise to feed you until you pop and ply you with lotsa ETOH. Regardless of the chemo schedule, I promise to be fit and energetic for at least 12 hours on that day. It usually starts around 12 pm and runs until the fireworks end at 1030.
Either way, I managed to post a chapter. Lets see if I can get another one up before Monday.
A
Don't know how I managed it but I posted again. Off we go into healing Slash, with a bit more Alda thoughts and impressions added to the mix.
How is everybody doing? Dirk is doing a fabulous job on Galaxy Tales and it is worth a gander to see his improvement. Just saying. He's like full of awesome sauce!
I blush, or do I mean I can feel heat rising into my face? More showy...
Thanks for the review, m'lady.
