As the first recipient, I just wanted to send a huge thank you to everyone for taking the time and providing your feedback. Each one of you commented on something new that will undoubtedly help strengthen my story. And I wanted to send an extra thank you to Jube for finding the need, deciding on a solution, and acting upon it. I'm glad to be part of the group and hope my input will be just as valuable as all of your is for me.
I will be starting with Cobber this week. I hope to loop through each group member weekly but no promises.

Thanks for putting this together, Jube. I'm excited. Once question: does anyone know how to tag this group so I get notified whenever a message is added to this board? I don't want to miss any conversations and currently, I won't see them unless I log on and during the work week, I don't log on often.

Walter closed the door and watched her through the peephole as she got on the elevator. He thought maybe he shouldn’t have told her the truth. What if she felt sorry for him now? He didn’t think he could stand to see pity in her eyes.

Hi everyone! I know the week is nearly done but wanted to add my lesson here, though it might be too late.
The only movie I've seen from the list is Harry Potter, so I'll choose another. The first to jump to my head is the Sound of Music. Not so recent days but it should work for the assignment.
(A) The inciting incident
The inciting incident is when Maria is sent to work for the family. She didn't want to go, it wasn't her idea, but it was a situation she was forced to deal with.
(B) The conflict (both external and internal) and what category they belong to (character versus society, character versus self, etc.)
The external conflict would be character versus man. Or in this case, a huge family full of prankful children that she must earn their trust and find a way to instill guidance with.
The internal conflict is Maria's pull away from the church even though she feels it is her duty to serve it.
(C) An explanation of the tension in a particular scene (why do we feel tension and what techniques does the author or film-maker use to create it?)
The scene that jumps to mind is when the father is driving home and sees his children hanging from trees like monkeys. Then, at the moment he wants them to make a good impression for his new bride, they fall into the water and come out dripping. This is the first time Maria really deals with the father and comes to learn quickly that he is not fun and does not accept her ways with the children. This causes tension in the house, not only with the children needing to return to their father's way of behaving, but also between him and Maria who do not see eye too eye with how children should live.
One of my all-time favorite movies.
Stefanie

Re: CLASS BIOS (Please Reply) (8 replies, posted in Crafting the Strongest Start (Online Class))
Hello everyone. Sorry to be chiming in so late. I've just returned home from a vacation in Florida. First time turning the computer on in a week! Now to catch up:
I like to write Young Adult Fantasies. I started writing around 2007 when I was unemployed and living overseas. I took a 4 year break after returning home and have struggled to find my work/writing balance ever since. My primary goal is to find a traditional publisher. At least to start. I know it sounds stupid but I don't think I will convince myself I am a good writer unless a publisher likes my story. I've had two short stories printed in annual collections my writing group published overseas. I did send my story off to one agent years ago. I didn't hear back. I also had no business submitting my story It wasn't ready. I was foolish. Favorite authors... J.K. Rowling, of course. I finished a book on the plane today by Samantha Shannon and loved it. I pre-ordered her second book in the series. Maybe someday someone will be pre-ordering a book from my series! What else? Something fun and quirky. How about stupid and humiliating? Somewhere in Hollywood, Florida, there is a parking lot attendant watching footage over and over again of the dumb lady this morning that chose to focus on wiping the rain off her glasses instead of the descending parking lot arm in front of her. I'm sure he is enjoying my confused look as the arm scratched down my chest while my slow brain struggled to comprehend what the strange white object was that kept trickling down my belly. I walked right into it. The arm stabbed me in the gut. I'm sure my "umph!" was very sexy, and bending over to grab my stomach was done with such grace. Forget writing, I just might become the next you-tube star!
