Topic: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

OK, we're back in the saddle.  I'm slow, but I think this forum will be the way to go so that we can pick up where all of us left off.  We can use this the same way we used to use the 'Writer's Feedback' forum on the old website.  Everybody sign on and make your page if I didn't get to it!

OK, my latest post took place the day before the new website went live.  If anyone has time, consider Chapter 9 of Mandates.  Especiallly if you want more of Anver's storyline.

Later,

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

On Horse's reappearance ... if you ever have Kha stumbling exhausted into a place of refuge, you could have Horse following him, unnoticed.  Just another way to do it.

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

That would really work Kha's last nerve, considering that I have him not casting magic, starving, and carrying Sil on a litter as he moves toward the trade road.  All with a horse following at a distance, within easy reach or a whistle away.

Hmph.  Might just consider that one since I love cause Kha stress.  Some characters just deserve it :-)

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

You have several moments of pure brilliance in this, mixed with parts that are wrong.  I am still bowing in your direction because you have found your way into discovering specific parts that no one else has been able to pick out.  (so far only New Jersey and Ernie have tried, so thank you) Here's what I'll give you.  Whoever made the guildhouse is greater than Faulter.  However, the guildhouse was not created by either Behira or Saundon.  It existed before they became gods.

Wrong parts...Airen is not Behira.  Fester is not Faulter.  Anver is not Saundon.  Zyrtec is not Zwamborn.  Remember that I don't like to write about gods.  I want the little people to shine and be the answer.  And if I turned Sosol into anything, it would be a kitten in Kajo's honor (meow)

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

Chapter 7 of Dictates is up.  I'm more than half done with the rewrites and new material will be coming as I move forward with this story.  Thanks to anyone who has the time to take a peek!

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

So Saundon and Behira became gods.  Is that Faulter's goal?  Mages were almost gods, except those who became gods?  Was the Guildhouse the product of one mind and one Power, or of several?  Is it a Genius Loci, or even the embodiment of some mage who forewent apotheosis?

Why do people who serve the Horrors call them "creator"?  I have to think you're giving us a three-foot pie-in-the-face clue here.

Back to work.  I finished the revised circuit layout before noon, and spent some time on shorthand practice reading. Now I'm working on Ch. 2.  I'll do you Ch. 7 when I open the flaptop later.

Duck!  PIE!  (Have you ever seen the Great Race?  The best pie fight EVER)

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

I just published v2 of Chapter 8 of Dictates.  If anyone has a moment, let me know what you think.

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

I'm not seeing it.  Are you sure you uttered all the right magic?

I have to get to bed now.  I spent the last few hours trying to fix a design problem, and before that I put the sketch of the far future chapter up.

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

It's on my public profile, so I believe it's accessible to you. If not, then please let me know.

I also posted a short memoir called 'Poetry Not Missed'.  It's painless.  Only a couple hundred words.  Could you take a peek?

It's up now.  I suspect TNBW hasn't got their caches right.

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

Is that pic next to your name a circuit diagram for the phone?  That's my best guess.

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

That's the flasher portion, about 1/3 of the parts and nodes.  An astable multivibrator to time the flashes, a monostable m.v. to set their duration, and another astable to fire narrow pulses directly off the power rails for max brightness in each flash, pulse width widening as the batteries run down. The pulses run from 140 usec at low voltage to 75 or 80 usec at max, and you need bells, whistle, and a gong or two to make the mutlivibrator run cleanly at those narrow duty cycles.  The first astable, on the other hand, needs a bell (but not a whistle) to avoid the lockup that ASMVs are prone to.  I'd hoped to use a shared emitter resistor--it's worked for me before--but it didn't work here.

Oh, 630 to 640 usec between the pulses, varying slightly with the pulse width, and about 7.4 msec for each flash.

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

I also found some things that won't work between the timer and the flasher.  The timer turns the flasher on by supplying power to it via a MOSFET.  I forgot that the timer output is totem-pole, not open collector/drain.  Fixable, but at this point I need to rearrange some things and find the most economical way to do it.  I don't have much room left for parts and connections.  I just had a thought on simplicating it.  Write it, think it, then get to reviews.

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

I changed the wording to be that 'she whacked Slash in the noggin with a pitcher.' Better?

Alda is now carrying a spear, and it clatters to the ground (along with Elston's weapon) when Elston answers the door. Poof. Spears appear.

In the damaged, supperating noggin.  Actually, I'm sorry I suggested 'noggin', since it's not your voice.

Alda has to avoid Slash's renewed injuries and his mangled mug, his damaged dial, his disfigured phiz.

I was afraid the spears had gone into into HammerSpace

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

Nope.  Poof.  Spears appear.  I made a rhyme!

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

Bring it on. You live I a glass house and leave the lights on so I can still hit you at night:-)

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

Say, why did Charm/Breckin take to Slash, anyway?  And before or after Tazar had his balls?

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

Charm and Slash have been an item(off and on) for years before Tazar kicked Slash out of the stadium.

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

I'm assuming it was after Charm was Charm'd?  I can't imagine Brekin and Slash seeing much in each other?  At least not much that would keep them together.

Why did Horror-Charm allow Brekin to stay with Slash?  Clearly she feels something about him, even if it's only that he can protect her.

I'm not sure now if I'm confusing different versions.  I remember Jaylene telling Sulder that Alda >destroyed< a Horror, but now the Horror resides in that mustard pot, ready to come out when Jaylene jumps in the river.  (AAaarrghhh!)

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

I can see that the wording would get to you.  I'll correct that.  The horror is disabled and separated from a host (after being recognized by Alda) It is not destroyed.  I'll fix that.

I've figured out much of Breckin's backstory but it isn't pretty.  That's why I only gloss over the character instead of spending a lot of time developing the character.  Short version.  Breckin is half an elf (like Kha).  She has been a slave of the Horror since she was about 20.  (On both sides of the ring)  Since I imagine her to be about 50-60 years old, that makes it 30-40 years that she hasn't had a Horror-free moment.

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

Oh, for those who see this, I'm going to post another chapter of Mantle tonight.  I'm quite pleased with myself (pats self on back) and finally completed the conversation with the priest of Saundon.  Boy was that a hard one to figure out, but so satisfying to finish!

Eh, the feeling will only last a week and then I'm going to be frustrated at my laziness again.

'On both sides of the ring'?

But if we believe Sil, a Horror can be destroyed.

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

Once to the previous owner.  Second to the ring itself.

A Horror can be destroyed.  You just have to assemble the right ingredients and I'm not going to make it easy :-)

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

Is a Horror a creature/creation of Faulter or something older?

I want to think a bit before doing your review, but I'll drop a preview here.  Yes to the big question.  Now, you have Anver clipping his staff to his seat.  This is in Anver's school or Katerin's?  If in Katerin's, do the chairs have clips?  Her students wear their wands.

By the way, will she be taking new, non-construct students?  What about Littles?

Will there even BE Magic and Mages when this is all done?

And, if the Magic of the mages is in conflict with Saundon's nexus, is the conflict fundamental?  Is magery, as the unfortunately gifted humans know it, a 'dark side' product?  Is that why the gift comes in bursts of anger?  Is that why you've shown us the utterly vile Alina making mules?
