Topic: Trade War?

Or do I mean, nano-war?

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that President Donald Trump could announce a trade deal with Mexico and Canada as soon as tomorrow, just one day after the US imposed punishing tariffs on the two nations and sparked retaliatory levies.

Some Canadians think Trump is a genius, though. His stupidity has created a huge movement in Canada to buy local/Canadian/non-US. Many folks online are helping each other find those products, saying they have no intention of reverting back to US products, since we're now aware of how dangerous it is for Canada to have so much reliance on trade with a single country, especially one that keeps voting a dumb-as-a-donut wannabe-be dictator into power.

When someone pointed out he can't live forever, someone else commented: He's got kids, who are just as stupid! :-)

As a thank you, a few Canadians on Reddit are encouraging everyone to order chocolate dicks (that's a real thing!) online and send them to the White House.

Re: Trade War?

Oh, that's hilarious, Dirk! I watched the whole fiasco from its (late) start, to the rousing, red, white, and blue big finish. All he needed was a brass band in the background. [Can I get a rah-rah!]

Zelenski has already said he wouldn't sell or give away mineral rights to Felon47 after the way he was treated in the Oval Office, and I don't blame him. Greenland and the Panama Canal Authority are probably mobilizing their own forces to keep his mitts off their respective countries/properties. And how about that "plant our flag on Mars" bullshit? Out of sight.

Re: Trade War?

I watched most of Felon47's self-congratulatory B.S. but finally turned it off in disgust.

Glad to read Dirk's comments about what Canadians are doing and both Sylvia and I laughed when we read a statement from Ontario Premier Doug Ford where he stated Musk's Starlink company had their $100 million contract cancelled. I hope Mexico and Canada can hold their nerve against the felon's tariffs.

I was stationed in the Canal Zone when President Carter signed two treaties with Panama. First, the Neutrality Treaty gave the U.S. military the right to defend the Panama Canal if there is ever a threat to its “neutrality.” Second, the Panama Canal Treaty stated that the Canal Zone would officially be dissolved on October 1, 1979, and that the canal itself would be turned over to Panama on December 31, 1999.

Why is Elon Musk using Air Force one as a personal taxi for his family? I thought he's supposed to be cutting fraud, waste, and abuse. In 2022, the Air Force stated that the cost to operate Air Force One is $177,843 per flight hour. Is Musk going to reimburse the taxpayers? I doubt it. Yet Newsweek and Latin Times have photos of Musk, his mother, and one of his kids stepping off Air Force One after a flight that didn't apparently didn't include Felon47. They then used Marine One to go to the White House.

I read Musk now has his sights set on social security, calling it a Ponzi scheme. So all social security recipients, CSRS retirees (Civil Service Retirement System), and FERS (Federal Employee Retirement System) need to pay close attention as he'll try to kill these benefits.

There was a time when elected officials had the brains not to touch Social Security because it was political suicide. I wonder how long it'll take before grannies with pitchforks descend on Washington. Admittedly, something needs to be done to rescue the program, but President Musk (a billionaire who seems not to give a s--t about anyone worth less than $1B) is not going to rescue the damn program; he's more likely to slash benefits, although I'm still waiting/hoping for the aforementioned pitchforks to appear. Sooner rather than later since I'm heavily dependent on it to pay my bills.

Re: Trade War?

I've paid into SS my entire working years... from my first job at 14 years old until now, 60 years later. If Musk cuts out social security, he had better have a trick up his sleeve for reimbursing me and millions of others the total amount we've put in and the total amount my employers matched for me. We never expected a rich man like musk to come along and decide it wasn't in our country's best interest to continue paying me. I depend on it to pay my bills as well.

Re: Trade War?

I'm not eligible for SS as I stopped paying into it in 1979 when I became a civil servant under CSRS, remaining in this program until I retired in 2011.  I paid the same amount as I would have in SS, but it went into a different pot. I'll be paying close attention as Sylvia didn't work enough in the U.S. to get SS or Medicare. Fortunately, she has a decent CSRS pension if I pass first. We kept  the medical insurance I had through the government when I retired, so Sylvia does have medical coverage.

To follow up on a comment from Bill, Felon47, Musk, and Vance can board one of Musk's Starship rockets and go on a one-way trip to Mars where they can plant as many flags as they want.

Re: Trade War?

If I remember correctly, I didn't work long enough in either Canada or the US to qualify in either country alone. Fortunately, they have a social security totalization agreement, so they looked at my combined credits (thank heavens).

EDIT: Musk can drive that Tesla on Mars that he launched into space (orbit?) some years ago.

Re: Trade War?

I am eligible for SSDI and Medicare because I have a terminal illness. If they take it away, I lose Medicare, and by that time, they may have done away with Obamacare and the pre-existing conditions clause. So I would quite literally die in a matter of months.

Literally an unelected sociopath as judge, jury, and executioner. How the hell did we get here?

I third sending Musk to Mars.

Re: Trade War?

Thanks to my 20-year career in the armed forces, I have Tricare for Life. Whatever Medicare doesn't pay, Tricare does. My quad bypass cost around $600K. I didn't pay a dime of it. Tricare also picks up my medications, and I get them from the base pharmacy. Having said all that, I would still be in dire straits if SS goes away. My wife gets less than I do, but I've been paying into it since 1961, when I enlisted, until 2004 when I finally retired (at 62). Now that both of us are octogenarians, we'd both get hurt by the loss of ANY of these programs.

Re: Trade War?

At the moment I’m too sick to get riled, but does anyone know why musk and his snot-nose brats are flying in Air Force One?
