Topic: I saw SNOW!!!!!

Just had the first snow for the year. Well, what I call snow. I don't even think it was half an inch and it's already starting to melt, but it was AWESOME. I was a kid again today. I've touched snow twice in my 42 year existence before today. But I have never ever ever seen snow falling from the skies. It was AWESOME. At first, I thought, nah, it's slush. But then it became real snowflakes. And then it started to cover the roofs, lawns, streets, and everything. Everything is covered in white right now. Just in time for Christmas too!!! I'm super excited.

I also ate snow. It tastes like cold water! tongue

We're still planning to go snow hunting a couple of times over the next 2 weeks over the school holidays. Proper snow, measured in feet, not inches. With sleds, we're going snow hunting and then we're going to have fun. With sleds. whooo-hoooo! And build a snowman. We have to, right?! *high 5*

Have I mentioned how AWESOME it was?!!!!!!! It was. I'm enjoying the feeling while it lasts. smile

Re: I saw SNOW!!!!!

Congratulations!

Re: I saw SNOW!!!!!

"Watch out where the huskies go and don't you eat the yellow snow." (Frank Zappa)

My brother-in-law was raised down South. He came up to Ohio for Xmas and we had some snow while he was here. He got this goofy grin on his face and informed everyone that this was a real blizzard!  I informed him that you could see the house on the other side of the street, so that wasn't possible.

Amy's rules for sledding:

1) You can't have fun if you are cold. Wear multiple layers (including pants). Everyone skips wearing multiple layers of lower protection, and only wears jeans. This isn't enough if you want to stay outside for long.

2) Pick a bunny hill for sledding if you want to stay out more than half an hour. Big descents are fun if it's a big hill, but the walk back up SUCKS. However, your kids willl be exhausted and sleep like rocks. Pick you poison.  Note that some sledding hills have a motorized circuit to hold onto and help you get to the top quicker.

3) Sledding at night is twice the cold. Have something over their faces/ears to prevent frostbite.

4) Toboggan runs are a hoot. Put 4 people on one toboggan who aren't 5 years old, and the momentum maks you fly. There are established runs somewhere near you. With the snow falling, they will start to open.

5) Nothing beats hot cocoa after freezing. Hot enough to burn your mouth is about the right temperature.

6) Look up yak trax.  yaktrax.com   They are worth picking up to turn regular shoes into something that won't let you fall on snow and ice. I have a couple extra pairs. Do you need another care package?

Have fun!

Re: I saw SNOW!!!!!

Ta, njc! *takes a bow*

*scribbles frantically* Gotcha! I think our first effort sledding will be recon than anything else. The second one will be all out!

You have heaps of handy rules Amy!!! And yeah, it was no blizzard, only for those from Perth WA! smile

Re: I saw SNOW!!!!!

You can sled on platters. Kinda cold and it beats up the dish, but oh, so fun!

Janet, I want pictures!  You had better Facebook those!

My friend and I used to tie a rope between our dogs harnesses and the sleds. The dogs would climb onto the sled to go down the hill with us, and then they'd pull us (or at least the sleds) back up the hill. big_smile

I have to agree though, Janet. Snow is pretty awesome. smile It's too bad I live in rain-country now.

Re: I saw SNOW!!!!!

Good dogs, those.

I knew a family, years ago, that had a husky and a couple of husky-malamute mixes.  They had a giant tricycle for the dogs to pull most of the year.

Re: I saw SNOW!!!!!

LOL K, haven't seen that one before. Thanks for the laugh!

Re: I saw SNOW!!!!!

Maybe they could pull a platter uphill?

Re: I saw SNOW!!!!!

Talking about big hills and small hills reminds me of sand-boarding back home. Only big ones unfortunately. It's fun going down, hurts going up though. Google Lancelin WA to see what the sand and dunes look like. It's an awesome day trip. But if you get it wrong, dinner lunch and breakfast are crunchy for the next couple of days as your body works out all the sand!

LOL, depends on how deep the snow is! I guess anything higher than 1 inch will be difficult/impossible.

You pay for them per meter (or yards), and not height. smile

Re: I saw SNOW!!!!!

You'd be surprised how well dogs do in the snow, but you do have to watch them, especially the short-hair breeds, for hypothermia.

These two are Australian, born in Queensland (humid and hot) and grew up in Perth (just hot). Even inside with the central heating going they're cold. They don't look at me with the same loving gaze as always either ... yikes

They went through their first pair of dog jackets quickly - thought it was very funny to chew it to bits and pieces. And then they realized what it did ... So far, the second pair is doing nicely! smile

Re: I saw SNOW!!!!!

But yeah, they have dog beds and plenty of blankets all over the place. When we leave home, they go with us and those times they don't, we leave them in the garage in a small doghouse that's enclosed with a mattress and blanket too - it's easy enough for them to heat it up fairly quickly even though the garage is cold. Have to say, it's also been a long time since they chewed a blanket ...

Re: I saw SNOW!!!!!

Janet. Watch the new Star Wars. You'll know the part I'm thinking of when you see it.
