Topic: Detective names

Detective Herman He & Detective Randy Yu

He and Yu are of Japanese/Chinese heritage names.

Would these homonym names throw you off?

I am running these guys in 1st person present.

The nature of my novel is delusion, deception.

Thanks - max

Re: Detective names

You likely plan to get some mileage from those names, but the joke might get a bit old before the end of the story. Just a thought.

Re: Detective names

Max I kinda agree with Jack...however, if you didn't over do the He and Yu jokes, it might work.

Re: Detective names

Michael Connelly uses the name He in "Nine Dragons" for a female character.  I think he already took advantage of the joke, although nobody was laughing, since the character met a bad end.  "Who is He?"  "She's my friend." "Where is He?"  etc.  That being said (or writ) I think it would be absolutely fine to use the names and never, never allude to the comic aspect, allowing the reader to make a little mental joke of his/her own.  You can be sure the two detectives will not be forgotten, that way.

Re: Detective names

In Sandford's Virgil Flowers series Virgil has a friend named Johnson Johnson...having fun with peoples names is pretty common...remember Pussy Galore?

Re: Detective names

In "The Sincerest Form of Flattery" I had an FBI agent named Henry ("call me Hank") Henry. Yeah, it can be fun fooling around with names. The James Bond girls' handles, of course, were often tongue-in-cheek double entendres.

Remember Catch Twenty-Two's Major Major?

Yes! That's where I got the idea! Loved that book. "You got flies in your eyes, Yossarian."

I think I remember you telling me that...HEY...did you buy Sam's Piano? https://www.yahoo.com/movies/casablanca … 30542.html

In the comments down at the bottom a young jerk said he'd rather buy a new piano he could play. I told him the guy who bought it didn't buy a piano...he bought MEMORIES...catch you later...:)
