Topic: What is an in-line review?

What is the difference between an in-line review and a regular review? And what happens, or is supposed to happen, when I highlight a sentence or word to review in-line? I tried this, and nothing happened. I was able to leave the "summary" or concluding review at the bottom. I assumed I could comment on the highlighted area somewhere in the area of the highlight. But I see that is not the case.  I couldn't find a help button, but now I have discovered the forums, so I'll take my learning here.

Re: What is an in-line review?

Wilma someone answered this in another forum, so I'm passing it on to you. Down at the very bottom of the author's work after you click review there are two buttons, one for regular review and one for in-line. You have to click that button then a message box pops up for you to comment in when you highlight text.

Happy writing! dags smile

Re: What is an in-line review?

Thanks Dags. I'll try again. When I've tried to look at others' in-line reviews I can't find them. But maybe I'll learn.

Re: What is an in-line review?

Yeah there is no way to skim all the forums...but the Premium/Classic one I think had your answer.

Re: What is an in-line review?

I'm asking my reviewers not to use inline reviews on my work.  I just put this in the story top notes for The Sorcerer's Progress:

Reviewers, PLEASE, don't commit your wisdom to inline reviews that I cannot print out and study at length, to which I cannot reply except in the most fragmentary way, and which are as ephemeral as the pixels on the screen.  Your wisdom deserves better and I deserve its full benefit.

Your mileage may vary, your experience may differ, but mine is that no matter how good an inline review, the format makes it impossible for me to study it as a whole or at length.  These problems could be mitigated (but not alleviated) by additions to the website.  They could be largely fixed by making the 'inline' mechanism a way to --enter-- the text of a single-body review that could be read and responded to as a whole.

Re: What is an in-line review?

I love in-line reviews when I'm leaving a review line by line, but I'm with you when it comes to using a received in-line review -- can't print out anything but the summary comment at the end. Perhaps this can be remedied. This is not a huge problem to me because I take my hard copy of the work and mark it up using the in-line suggestions on specific lines. For now, that works just fine.

Re: What is an in-line review?

If you're using a PC you can press alt-tab to switch back and forth among screens. This will help taking in-line review comments and incorporating them into a manuscript. We'll be adding other features soon to make it easier to act upon the feedback provided in in-line reviews.

Re: What is an in-line review?

Thank you Sol. I'll try the alt-tab thingie and hope I don't mess something up.

Re: What is an in-line review?

I don't know if this would be the simplest thing to provide, but maybe the simplest to use would be a way to view the entire sequence of comments, with the in-line comments each as a box with the highlighted text at the top and perhaps an indication of where the snipped occurs (adjacent words if it's less than four or five words, and a percentage for how far down it is).

I've asked my reviewers not to use in-line reviews.
