Maybe these authors just decided to have fun and enjoy writing something that stirs emotion in the reader versus restricting their thoughts to proper grammar rules? Seems to have worked for them.

Long sentences are fine. Depends on how well they're written. The reader should be so enthralled they won't pay attention to the length of the chapter.

I think "Kate and Leopold" is a nice movie. Can't beat romance mixed with time travel.
