My other story thread!

It's All Mercenary is an old project. If you look at the timestamp on the original postings, it's been almost ten years. (eep!) The premise was a spin on the classic questing tale, with characters that deliberately stomp on their stereotypes. The mercenary talks to his horse and is our sarcastic narrator. The barbarian is a scholar. The elf is actually a horrendous archer, and so on. I still love the concept and am determined to finish it. The one marked First Draft is actually quite a ways into the story, perhaps somewhere around halfway. (I discovery write, so I'm not entirely sure.) I rewrote the first 3 chapters for a Strongest Start contest that drastically differ in tone, which I felt was both good and bad.

The original is very much all over the place, although the humor is brilliant at times, if I do say so myself. My second iteration is much more streamlined, but my main character is lacking that spark, although the other characters I introduce seem more fleshed out. I want to find a happy medium between the two.

My story thread!

So The Speaker grew from an idea I had last NaNoWriMo. A community of dragons lives in close proximity to the human country of Torin. They claim the sea cliffs as their own and subsist on fish for the most part. Once a year, the Shahn (human leader) travels to the meeting place and reaffirms the Treaty with the representatives of the dragons. This is done through the use of Speakers, who are the individuals of each species that communicate mind to mind. The weakest can merely understand the other, the strongest (of whom the dragon Speaker is one) can actually take control of the other and speak with the other's voice.

Maiya is the acting human Court Speaker, as her father was too ill to make the journey. At this particular meeting, the dragons reveal they have killed humans caught killing one of their own. And now there is a possibility of the resurgence of the bloody conflict that brought about the necessity of the Treaty in the first place. There's also hints of a black market for dragon parts. I also intend to follow one of the dragons, the mate of the one killed.

So Maiya will be involved in trying to prevent this conflict, but I haven't really gotten too far into the weeds yet. I'm also still fleshing out the world and its history beyond vague descriptions of war and strife between the two species.

Hello all
I'm old but new. Technically been a member for eons, but I disappeared because life. I missed a site change apparently....
Previously went by k.s. talyn, but decided to change it. Aly is nickname. Two major WIP right now (I know, I know I need to finish one.) 'It's all Mercenary' and 'The Speaker'. I write mainly fantasy, but I read scifi, mystery, and romance as well.
The last time I was here, I collaborated with C. Lee Brown and many others and got two stories published in an anthology. I am in the United States Coast Guard, so I apologize in advance for erratic schedules.

1) Previously went by k.s. talyn, but decided to change it. Aly is nickname. Two major WIP right now (I know, I know I need to finish one.) 'It's all Mercenary' and 'The Speaker'.
2) Favorite genre....writing fantasy, certainly. Reading, mostly fantasy, with a smattering of scifi and mystery. Regency romance when I need fluff.
3) My first ever character was named Talyn. Classic tragic character that got recycled numerous times, but was always somewhat feline. Formidable (Usually cursed) but also timid....I used to frequent role-play forums.
