Re: Bug Reports & Admin Requests
Sol, I'm still getting kicked out regularly by the site. Have you made an intentional change to the timeout period?

I'm not seeing the problem. Maybe a cookie/cache thing?
It's new behavior since about the first time I reported it one the previous page.

Hi Dirk, are you being kicked off the homepage or all pages of the site?
Sol
From different pages. The first time I was finishing a review (the bottom text field). The others I don't remember exactly which pages. I use two devices to access the site most days (a Chromebook and a Windows PC). Any idea if switching between them might be causing this?
Dirk
I guess that's possible but probably not likely. I'll check it out with the developers. Thanks for letting me know.
For what it's worth, I just checked the site from my phone (which I also do at times) and it had kicked me out there, too. I then checked the site from my Windows desktop, and I had not been kicked out from there.
Sol, I wonder if it would be possible to change the order of our Connections. Right now, if I want to see or communicate with the latest few of my connections, I must page through every one of the older ones to get there. If the list was ordered so the last connection was on top, it would be a lot easier.

Interestingly, when I log in and check my cookies, I see most of them are set to expire within a few hours to a day

I wonder if you've set your cookies to expire within a certain period of time. The site should have a persistent cookie. That's what I am looking into. Thanks.

Sol, I published three chapters last night around eleven pm but they still don't show on the home page. The name of the book is "The Archangel Syndrome." I published chapters 21-23. The chapters show up correctly in the book, but they don't appear on the home page.
Thanks
Dirk
Also, my short story entitled "Bunny Divine" has disappeared off the home page as well even though I just posted it a few days ago.

Okay. We'll check it out. Thanks.
No need. They all appeared the following morning, along with the short story. Gremlins!
Thanks

The site has begun kicking me out again on a regular basis (most days), requiring a login. Happens on my Windows 10 PC and my Android phone. I can't recall if it happens on my Chromebook too since I don't use that much. The behavior had subsided substantially a few weeks after I last reported it. It crept back into the system a few weeks ago (maybe 2 - 4), but it was infrequent so I ignored it. I run Google Chrome on all devices.
I just logged in again a few minutes ago and 2 of 3 cookies are set to expire within 20 hours (one within 5). Interestingly my forum-cookie is set into May, and I've tested it works when I'm "signed out" as in I can still read/post in forum when logged out from the main site.
Edit: Getting kicked off the main is only a minor inconvenience, but it'll hit mid-review which is a nuisance. Especially when I'm on tablet and have written a complex in-line note only to have it vanish into the aether. Periodically leaving a short in-line during the review process helps identify the error state

Yeah, I need to talk to the developers about that. Not sure why they did that. I agree it's annoying.
I don’t know whether the problem was on my end or TNBW, but trying to re-set a forgotten password turned out to be a weeklong digital nightmare. Initially, the process seemed simple enough: click the “I forgot my password” button and copy and paste or highlight and slide over the dots and scribbles displayed in the captcha box to the verification code box. Over the course of the week, I tried that numerous times—on different computers and my IPad. Nothing worked. I tried calling various numbers listed for Sol (all are no longer in service as far as I can tell). I sent messages via Facebook Messenger and emailed various published addresses for both the “Help” and “Support” desks. No response. I began to feel like a frustrated stalker, trying to track down Sol. I even left a phone message and email where he’s listed as an adjunct professor. Boundaries, I know! But desperation…Well, finally after threatening to complain to VISA (and identifying that I had saved the original receipt) and/or the Better Business Bureau, someone emailed me and eventually he or she re-set my password. I don’t know whether my threat was ever actually seen or whether it was coincidental that a human actually responded. In any case, this is not a way to do business. If there is a bug in the captcha system, it needs to be fixed. Defunct phone numbers for Sol need to be removed. And reasonable requests to the help desk need to be addressed promptly, even if it’s just “we’re working on it.” So, at the moment, though I’m glad to have access now to the site (thanks to a new password), TNBW’s credibility as a business definitely has been tarnished and I have changed my setting to not to renew automatically. This will be a period to ponder whether to continue here or move to another writers’ site. I would be interested in Sol’s response (isn’t he the wizard behind the curtain) or whoever has knowledge to shed light on my dark experience.
Hi Clairedeplume,
I'm sorry for what you had to go through. It was a nightmare and not the level of support we hope to give. A variety of factors converged to put you through the gauntlet.
We're going to debug the captcha, remove old numbers, and modify some of our support processes so it doesn't happen again. Look for an email from me shortly with some additional info.
Sol
