Hi, can’t create covers for some of my stories. Can’t figure out why. Any ideas?
Hey! The form is not very intuitive, but the likely reason you can't submit a cover is because you have selected a file for the cover AND selected that you want a cover title or other selections in the cover form, which causes the cover file to not load for reasons I can't fathom. If you select a file to upload as your cover, be sure you have "create title" on "no," and then hit "upload your image and create your cover." You have to add your own title/author text to the image before upload. Hope this helps, if it doesn't, let me know!
Apricots, you don't normally have to add your own title/author name to the image. The site can do that for you. I'm not sure why you ran into trouble with that.
7sisterseen, if I remember correctly, I've run into the same problem as you in the past. It may have to do with the image itself. I don't know what caused it, but you may want to try a few different images (and image/file types) to see if that fixes it. If no one here can suggest something that works, you can contact SolN for help.
Just tested and you're right, I tried for days before, came to the forums for help, and the only thing that worked was selecting no on the title. The only difference now is that I'm on a different computer. I tried it in four different browsers on my mac and it wouldn't work as long as I had title selected as yes.
I use Pic Monkey for my covers, basics are free and only about 5 dollars a month for a subscription. I usually find an image on google that matches my idea for a cover. Then I down load it to my computer and then use the create from your computer function on Pic Monkey. Once down loaded I can photo shop effects and add a title from font I pick and place it where I want to on the image. Then I reload to my computer, making sure it's gif or jpeg. Then I go to the create a cover function and down load it there. If the file is too big, I go back to Pic Monkey and resize it.
It takes a while to learn the Pic Monkey program, but after you do, you'll get faster and the results will look professional. I've just uploaded a cover and every thing worked, so I hope this helps.
Hello! I'm wondering why some of chapters I post do not include the italics in the original copy? I'm working in Word and it doesn't seem to happen all the time, but when I go back to check it's definitely missed them. This isn't a huge deal, but I'm wondering if I haven't done something, or if re-posting them again would help?
Thanks so much.
My italics don’t transfer over either. Nor do my paragraph breaks. That’s a long-standing issue. Didn’t used to be the case when I was using Explorer before going to Chrome. But then Explorer didn’t work either. I’ve used MS Word throughout. It’s a pain, but I’ve gotten used to it, though I sometimes miss one when I edit on the site. I brought this up to Sol a long time ago. Still waiting for a remedy.
Hi Sol,
A few days ago I stopped receiving email notifications for reviews and connection postings. I tried turning them off and on, but it's still not working. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Lauren
I know it's not a sitewide issue as I'm still getting all the emails--have you checked your spam/junk email folder?
Hey Apricots,
Nope, not in spam. I'll try signing in and out of my account. Thanks for the reply!
Lauren
The "search by title" field on the Review tabs doesn't seem to work. I searched for two variants of a short story I wrote, originally called "Dune - Into the Worm", then renamed to "Dune - The Atreides Worm". I searched for both titles under regular reviews received and inline reviews received. There are definitely inline reviews for the latter version of the story, which is still up. Not sure if I deleted the former or simply republished under the new name. Probably the latter since I like to hang on to the reviews.
Sol, the logins are timing out with much greater frequency than before, similar to what it was doing some months ago.
Yes, I've run into the frequent time out as well.
Ok. I'm going to look into these issues and will report back. Thanks for letting me know.
Sol, do you still plan to fix the "make sticky" feature that no longer shows up for some member accounts? I still hope to make a number of other posts sticky in the groups that I moderate. Feel free to log in as me to verify the missing functionality (I can give you my password if you need it).
I also continue to find examples of people accidentally sending themselves quickees. I had suggested an easy fix for that on page one of this thread. Ditto for an easy way to avoid new members accidentally creating multiple books when they intend to add chapters.
Thanks
Dirk
Yes, we've been fixing a few other bugs on site first.
For a bit, IPs started showing, all starting in 10.x
They vanished just now
One further potential tweak to the "send quickee" interface is to throw up an error message if someone tries to send themselves a quickee, with an explanation of how to do it right.
Hi,
I went to add a new chapter for review and realized that I didn't have enough points. So I did some reviews and came back to post. I seemed to recall a red button that asked me to continue before. That's not there and when I try to post a new chapter it says that it already exists. I don't want to try to post over it as I don't want to mess things up.
Any thoughts on how I can get around this?
Please let me know.
Dave, are you encountering this inside the publish wizard? If so, your previous attempt to post the chapter is probably already saved. Click on the Publish step at the top of the wizard and see if the new chapter is already listed there. If so, you need only click on the green publish button now that you have the points.

Hi Dirk,
OI go into "Post Your Writing" screen and there's nothing there. All I can do is add a chapter to the existing book, but it keeps listing the next chapter number and not the one I'm trying to post. It says that it already exists when I enter the chapter number that I uploaded earlier. For the life of me I can't bring it up to post. There's no red button anywhere. Can you please lay out the steps and buttons I need to click from the home screen in order to get it to work?
thanks,
Go to your home page (click Home on the blue bar along the top) and click on your picture. That'll take you to your public profile, which currently shows your two books. Click on the book to which you want to add the new chapter. From there, click on the +Chapter button. That takes you to the Add Chapter step inside the publish wizard (the publishing steps are listed at the top). Since I can't see your account, there are two possibilities: either the site has already saved your previous attempt to add a new chapter, or it hasn't.
Click on the Publish step (#4) at the top to see if there is a saved version of your chapter from your previous attempt to add it. If there is, it should show in the list of chapters on the screen, with a green Publish button next to it. If it's there, you only need to click that button and follow the remaining steps.
If the chapter you intended to publish is not there, then click back to the Add Chapter step (#3) at the top and fill in the details. If you're trying to add a chapter number that already exists in your book, it won't let you, which may be what you're running into. For example, your Cadet - Chapter 3 book already has a chapter 1 in it. And your Cadet - Chapter 4 book already has a chapter 4 in it. You can either choose a different chapter number, or use the same chapter number but a different version number. Version numbering is used when you're trying to post a revised version of an existing chapter for people to re-review.
If none of the above works, please post a follow up to the Writing Tips & Site Help group (this Bug Report forum thread is really more for bug reports). Let me know to which book you're trying to post the new chapter and what chapter number you're trying to use. If the chapter number is already used and you want to change the existing number to something else (e.g., if you want to make your existing chapter 1 in book 3 into chapter 2), please let me know that too. It may just be a matter of renumbering the existing chapter before posting the new chapter, which is easy to do, but I need more detail.
Thanks
Dirk
Is anyone else noticing a recurrence of frequent timeouts? I've been kicked out of the system four times in less than 24 hours.
Thanks
Dirk
Sol, the timeout bug is definitely back. I'm getting kicked out every few hours.
