A few days ago, Ukraine launched an attack with unmanned vehicles and drones against Russian forces. So, in the year 2024 we have now seen a robotic battle at least from one side. What will battles look like in the year 2500, or 3000 or beyond? And I have to wonder if AI will help to make the situation even more interesting. We will have all robot wars with people simply making adjustments to the battlefield? Therefore, we sci-fi writers might need to consider how we construct battles, farmers, doctors, factories, and a host of other things.

Dirk has a great taxicab driver, Leonardo. I'm not sure AI can do crazy yet. And I'll be disappointed to lose Leonardo to AI. However, it is a possibility.

Therefore, how do we keep ahead of all this? My initial thoughts are to reduce human head count significantly. But is that reasonable?

Any thoughts?

George FLC (Future Learning Curve)

The Tribe v4

Hey everyone. I've started a radical rewrite of the Tribe, the Town, and the Spirits. Yes, I've changed the title.
1. I want to limit the chapter word count to about 1500 words. This makes for easier reading on the train or in bed before sleeping.
2. I will try to keep the character names per word count to about 2 names/600 words.
3. I want to simplify some items, such as where the demons come from. This one is still tough because I like that a Greek god like Bacchus was a wine god. It's a great god to have relatives to manage saloons. However, I discovered that the Maya had a god of alcoholic beverages (Aken). So, I almost have to mix deities outside of the Cheyenne culture to make some things work.
4. Some name changes are needed.
5. A stern eye must be kept on who might be reading this. Audience is significant.

My first need for help is whether or not God would refer to Satan as Satan or as Lucifer. I start Chapter 1 with Satan and God talking. I assume that almost everyone knows who Lucifer is. And it does sound more sophisticated to me than Satan. I'm really tempted to switch over to Lucifer for Chapter 1. BUT does that mean I should keep it as Lucifer the entire book? Or only when God talks to him.

Thanks for any help.
George FLC

The Archangel Syndrome

Kill me now. Once upon a time, I used to always capitalize the adjective imperial, such as (the imperial admiral became the Imperial admiral). At the end of the 2nd draft of Galaxy Tales and after a bunch research from many sources, including CMOS and Star Wars novels, I decided capitalizing it was wrong. My book was pretty much the only place I could find it capitalized (outside of proper nouns, of course). So, in the third draft, I switched them all to lowercase, and I thought the matter was settled.

However, Jack, who is currently reading Archangel, felt fairly strongly Imperial should be capitalized. And another online writer once wrote that if a term like imperial galleys refers to galley ships of a specific empire, then Imperial should be capitalized, whereas a reference to the galleys of many empires would be lowercase (imperial galleys), although I don't know if that rule is correct.

Then along came the Enduring Republic of Stars. If I wanted to write a "Republic fleet", Republic should clearly be capitalized since Republic is a proper noun in this case. But, in order to minimize the similarities to Star Wars Republic(s), I decided to use Enduring as the adjective (e.g., Enduring fleet, Enduring worlds, Enduring troops, etc.). Since Enduring is also a proper noun, it should be capitalized as well. That leads to things like this: the Enduring fleet battled the (lowercase) imperial fleet. The latter case comes up a lot.

Thoughts?
Dirk

Group members can then use that thread to discuss the named member's story. You can keep updated on discussions by subscribing to the threads that interest you, or simply check out the forum from time to time and comment when the spirit moves you.

Other topics/threads for other purposes are welcome as well, including requests for reviewers for new stories.
In Memoriam - Amy Sonada

This group is dedicated to the memory of its founder, Amy Sonada, who passed away in 2019 after a two-year battle with colorectal cancer. A wife and mother of two children, including a son with autism, Amy began her career as an EMT, then became an RN, PA, and finally NP. She joined TNBW in 2011 and founded the Medieval Fantasy/Magic group, which became a welcoming watering hole for writers of multiple genres, including works in Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Historical Fiction/Romance. She gave freely of her time, helping to mentor other writers while simultaneously penning four books in her magic series, including Acts of Academia, Dictates of Magic, Mandates of Magic, and Mantle of Magic. She can best be described as a force of nature, who surrendered her active life very reluctantly. She was also a wonderful friend and human being, and is remembered with fondness.

One of the most memorable moments in her novels was the first meeting between the half-elf Kha, a Master Mage of the Guild of Magic, and Sil, a Mage from the ancient Age of Magic, a time when mages were like gods. In their meeting, Sil was unexpectedly released from voluntary service that had held her in many forms, most recently a dragon. But it was the often-irascible Kha’s unexpected ritual of profound courtesy that sealed the dramatic and momentous moment, and perhaps allowed Sil to become a gorgeous – and terrifying – woman once more.

The Guild was Amy’s place of refuge for those cursed with magic to learn in safety. Most were cast out by their families, sometimes as toddlers, because until a mage was properly trained, they were a danger to everyone within a radius that varied with the mage’s power.

Other memorable characters included: young Anver, Kha’s second-in-command at his Guild school, who fought and won a duel to the death against the Mistress Alina, another Master Mage; the baffling Zyrtek, a time-defying chronomancer, whose messages from the ancient Age of Magic watched you watching him watching you; Tilly, the shepherdess of Kha’s grateful, devoted, and sometimes frightening students; and Tazar, a skilled and relentless fighter and strategic warrior, and a dedicated and selfless friend.

Perhaps the funniest character was the aging Alda, a feisty and earthy woman whose practical concerns included worrying about where to find a job that provided free dinners — with beer — were she to be kicked out of her role as a junior priestess. To her dismay, she was promptly promoted to the second-to-top rank of her order in one evening by the goddess Behira. Alda’s plebian attitude led to outrageous, often humorous, and sometimes dangerous solutions to problems, with an occasional push from Behira.

Please feel free to leave your tribute comments below.

I don't normally post two masterpieces (eh, hem) at once, but I got busy over the last week, the Muse struck me, and I wrote another novel. This one is YA. It didn't start out as YA, but the protagonist told me she was 15 years old when the adventure happened to her, and like the faithful amanuensis I am, I wrote that down. It has some sex, nudity, and swearing in it, but I checked and as long as it's necessary for plot and character development and you don't go overboard, you can get away with it. It is necessary, as it takes place in Rhiannon's World From about fifteen years before "Love in Exile to the end of "Out of Exile." It's Diane Witherspoon's story. Yeah. 'Niff said. lol Rachel.

I am thinking of ditching my current prologue and using the epilogue as the prologue. The benefit? It might make the plot structure clearer, introducing the antagonist and hinting at what she's up to. The disadvantage: It might make the plot structure clearer, introducing the antagonist and hinting at what she's up to.

The seeming randomness of the events in the story give it a Phillip K Dick-esque feel (Not that I'm comparing myself to the Master). Like his works, you are in a constant state of "Huh?" or "What just happened?" It all resolves at the end (well, sort of, as the immortal would say).

So guide me.
Elusive Paradise

Hail and well met everyone,
Name is Marius, from Sheffield United Kingdom. I am certain most writers are paranoid about sharing their work on the internet, either because it's not ready and they don't want to feel ashamed because it's not up to the standard they want it to be, or because they are afraid of plagiarism. Well, I decided to come over here and share my new up and coming novel series set in a grim-dark universe akin to Warhammer.
Last year I finalized a shapeshifter novel set in the Fantasy Kingdom Kaskilia, loosely based Sabaa Tahir's Ember in the Ashes and Blood Queen by Victoria Aveyard. However, my co-author and I haven't yet managed to land an agent although we are sending as many queries as possible. We are still trying however and we will not give up, but in the interim, I wanted to write something new.

Elusive Paradise is what I might describe as "What happened if Joan of Arc met the Black Prince." It's a Low Fantasy setting, as such limited magic save for a form of reincarnation, and entirely focused on the human element of strife, suffering and hard-won triumphs. So if you like Game of Thrones and Berserk this is your cup of tea.
I don't pull any punches, my characters are the products of a hard life and harsh world, and I want to treat each of them, including the liars, cutthroats, and thieves with respect.

I will appreciate any constructive feedback, even harsh ones since I have thought skin. Will later be doing the rounds and bookmark a few WIP novels in the boards to see what catches my eye.

Best regards, Marius.
