The flight from LAX to PIT seemed like a hop, skip, and jump. The excitement Rob felt at seeing his sisters again was overshadowed by the trepidation of facing his dad and stepmother. Why he should feel so guilty was beyond him. He had done nothing wrong. But his family was good at making him feel as if he had.

“Whose idea was this anyway?” Rob turned to look at D in the seat next to him.

“Yours,” D answered.

“Mine?”

“Yeah.” D hesitated. “You still want to be forgiven for something you didn’t do.”

“Oh, come on.”

D shrugged. “I see what I see.”

“I just want to see my sisters, D. I miss them. As for my brothers, they can all go to hell.”

“And your dad? And stepmom?”

Rob shuddered at the thought. “From what Caleb said, the old man is sick. I don’t know how sick or from what, but my soul tells me to get some closure.”

“Your soul is very wise.”

“I guess. But Greta can go to hell with my brothers.”  Rob leaned back in the seat and closed his eyes. The sound of the jet engines lulled him into a false sense of sleep. He could still hear everything, and his mind wandered through past events in his life. Sometimes he wished his mind would stop, but it never did.

He opened his eyes as a thought struck him. “How did you ever get Brown to agree to time off? I still have a few concerts left to do before the tour is over.”

“You’re not getting that much time off, Rob.”

“Yeah, but an entire week?”

D shrugged. “You were due.” He wasn’t ready to tell Rob about his contract and how Brown screwed him over. Rob had enough to deal with right now. And it was Brown’s place to break the news.

“Well, thanks. It’s appreciated.”

“I know.” D glanced at his watch. “We still have a few hours before we land. Why don’t you get some sleep?”

Rob looked down at his hands folded in his lap. “I can’t sleep,” he said. “I can never sleep.”

“What’s that supposed to mean, you can never sleep? Why can’t you sleep?”

“I don’t know. My mind won’t shut off.”

“Have you tried counting sheep?”

Rob gave a short laugh, leaned his head back against the headrest and closed his eyes.
