The Real Hollywood (revisited)
Written by: Odin Roark
The Academy Awards partially vindicated itself last night with recognition of fictional truth over political truth--that bottom-line-rule aspect of Hollywood which, more often than not, seems to dominate acknowledgment. With several of the awards, and especially Hurt Locker and Precious, we as writers were left with optimism relative to smaller, important issues receiving the deserved recognition. One could argue that last night suggested The Real Hollywood was made to further contemplate their responsibility to audiences over and above creating "just" worthwhile mainstream entertainment. It could be further argued that the Best Screenplay, Director and Picture served as a worthy model of taste and execution for the ethical future of cinema.
