Waking up with the Mules

This is the title story of a collection of stories that will chronicle over the lifetime of the narrator, Lucky Owens, happenings in Blue Ruby, Virginia. I’m not sure it meets whatever the workshop definition of a short story is, but I’ve posted it here as a short story to reflect its size. To frame the significance of the story within the context of the collection, I've tried to tell a story within a story within a story. I say this to warn you off if you are the kind of reader who doesn’t abide stories that circle back on themselves.
