Billy Cooper had a secret never to be told.
In Britain and Ireland a widespread traditional rhyme records the myth that seeing magpies predicts the future, depending on how many are seen.
This short story is a modern day spin on an old version of that rhyme that I discovered for the first time. It won runner up prize in the 2008 www.YouReadOnline.com site and was subsequently printed in the short story compendium called "A Thousand Trembling Leaves and other short stories"
