An Argument for Capital Punishment?

Written by: Matthew Berg

WARNING: This poem contains very strong language--so do not continue if you are offended by such. Okay, that out of the way, here's a little backstory to this poem which is based upon actual events. And if you're someone who believes that poems aren't meant to be explained, please skip ahead to the poem itself and know that this is truly the exception for me as I typically let them speak for themselves. Several years back I read a newspaper article about how a man was killed by a woman who was driving while drunk. Happens every day, right? Well, in this case, to make matters worse, we have the following: She tried to claim that she wasn't driving and that her physically disabled aunt was behind the wheel! Not bad enough for you? Here's the kicker for me: The article described how the dog found its way home after the accident and how that's what clued the dead man's wife in to the fact that something had happened. So, please tell me if you think my poem--language, focus on the dog, etc. drives home the weight of the crime of drunk driving (what so many people call--or think of as--a victimless crime--at least until something like this happens). Thanks! Edited 20080501: Replaced "fucking" with "damned" in the second stanza. I not only think it reads better but I also think it contributes to the feeling of slowly cooling anger toward the final two lines.
