Heartbreak Hotel: Rain and Rust (Part 1)

This is actually a novella, part of a small collection of longer stories that I have been outlining between stints with my previous works. The stories in the collection all share a common theme, namely the place unaffectionately called Heartbreak Hotel. This is the first installment in the collection, and I have tried to take my writing in a different direction with this one. I have pared down the language from my usual bent, choosing rather to let dialogue and abstraction take this one where it will. Also, this segment utilizes the first person present tense in its telling, at least until the denouement. It's entirely experimental for me in that regard, so I need to know how it works.
