 | Curing Sanity | Odin Roark | Poetry | 2 | 0.00 | Feb 6, 2012 |
Summary:In a world where conformity bodes well for those satisfied with mediocrity, far too little is credited to the inordinate creativity that challenges the mental health of the sane. Chapters: |

 | Healing | Odin Roark | Poetry | 7 | 0.96 | Jan 27, 2012 |
Summary:(NOTE: this is not pretending to be a poem, but as an "editorial" the poetry column is where the site places such writing.) ---- In reading the New York Times scathing indictment of human rights violations: “In China, Human Costs Are Built Into an iPad” one has to challenge one’s own willingness to prioritize life over “stuff.”

 | Seattle Sports Nougat | John Hamler | Short Story | 11 | 1.99 | Jan 25, 2012 |
Summary:I know, I know... I really talked some shite when this contest was first announced. Now I'm afraid I can't back it up. This always happens to me. Especially when it comes to athletics. I shoot my mouth off and then, once we get on the court (in the ring, on the field, or inside the lines) I inevitably get my ass kicked in. Still, I had to post SOMEthing. Right? So here's a brief chronicle of one American town's sad professional sports history. While I, incumbently, try to extract some measure of triumph from the jaws of futility.

 | Advice to My Grandchildren | brosna11 | Poetry | 10 | 0.69 | Jan 20, 2012 |
Summary:A little tongue in cheek here. How does one advise grandchildren? Their lives are so different. But some things must be understood. I mention here what I consider to be important, but leave a lot out as not enough room. These are the essentials. Chapters: |
 | Rainbows for MLK | brosna11 | Poetry | 7 | 0.26 | Jan 16, 2012 |
Summary:Rev. Martin Luther King's struggle for civil rights was a bold political initiative. Politicians didn't like it, wished he would go away, but he wouldn't. He was right. He put his life on the line. He forced the Kennedy administration to face up to the reality of segregation. The evil of segregation not only in the south but up north too. Rev. Ralph Roy went to jail with Rev. King for disobeying the law. He was a white man who had a Methodist church in Harlem. I meet him every July 4 at a picnic in Ware, Mass. He brings his friend Joan, Robert DeNiro's Aunt. Chapters: |
 | Serious Rock - The Best Case Against Overdubbing | GPyrenees | Short Story | 10 | 0.28 | Jan 6, 2012 |
Summary:Anything - ANYTHING! - to avoid working on my next chapter of Client Relations. I'm in such a January funk, even I can't believe it.
I admit, I can't put words to how I feel about music. But I figure, if my good friend and partner in attitude, Mistah Hamlah, can add his perverse sexual fixations to his interpretations of music, and land kudos for his efforts? : ) Well, what the hell...Men, even insanely clever ones, don't have a corner on rock reviews.....
So. Here goes nothin'.....Chapters: |
 | How to Save Your Pet, Yourself, and Your Wallet from Pain and Suffering | RaphiHails | Novel | 4 | n/a | Jan 5, 2012 |

 | LATERALUS | John Hamler | Short Story | 6 | 0.81 | Dec 24, 2011 |
Summary:Okay, this song is so f-ing awesome that it actually compels me to insist that my fellow TNBW writers listen to it AS they write. I really have no right to suggest such a thing and yet that's the level of influence this song (and band) has upon my own life. It's one of those things where art doesn't just imitate, but illuminates, life. Yeah, I know... I'm getting carried away. :)Chapters: |
 | HOW MANY MORE TIMES | John Hamler | Short Story | 7 | 0.21 | Dec 22, 2011 |
Summary:An epic Led Zeppelin track, unscientifically analyzed... Just happened to come on while I was writing, and I suddenly got inspired to spit some shit about it... I dunno. I might do more of these EPIC song (Over FIVE minutes long and with substantial time signature and thematic changes) treatments, but the only problem is... The songs I'm thinking about really deserve more thought put into them than I'm willing to give. So I dunno...

 | MY GREAT MOMENT IN SPORTS: The 1986 NL Championship Game 3 | dagnee | Short Story | 7 | 0.72 | Dec 14, 2011 |

 | Selecting Dolly | helen grey | Short Story | 12 | 0.66 | Dec 9, 2011 |
Summary:At the time of the Basil D'Oliveira controversy I was ten... I had been born in East Africa and then moved to West Africa so it felt very close to home. I remember the total disbelief that anyone would do anything so clearly unfair. This is not what I normally write though, so I am very interested in feedback! For anyone not familiar with cricket - if you think of a 6 as being like a "home run" I think that would be close. A century (a batting score of 100) is brilliant and a bowler has to get as many opponents "out" as possible. The story is not really about cricket though. Whether it is a great sporting moment is also debateable - but it was great and it was sporting. It was a moment in history where an entire nation said "NO"!Chapters: |
 | KALE SOUP | brosna11 | Poetry | 8 | 0.17 | Dec 2, 2011 |
Summary:I'm inspired by Dr. William Carlos Williams and Dr. Joel Fuhrman. WCW wrote poetry about food and JF writes recipes in his health books. I combined both and wrote this poem.

 | Justice, ten years after the last tower fell... | Cate Carpenter | Short Story | 7 | 0.85 | Aug 31, 2011 |
Summary:I originally wrote this story shortly after Osama Bin Ladin's reported death, and I had some wonderful reviews given. I took the nits, and changed some things up, and now am wondering if it would be worth submitting as an editorial as we approach the ten year anniversary of 9/11...
Thought? Is it a story worth telling? I took the approach of first person, a family survivor who lost a loved one that day.
I welcome all thoughts...CateChapters: |
 | Lessons Learned By Observation Part One | flowing pencil | Short Story | 9 | 0.10 | Aug 30, 2011 |

Any and all feedback is appreciated. Hopefully a smile or two.Chapters: |
 | Chocolate Covered Greed | Odin Roark | Short Story | 5 | 0.09 | Aug 25, 2011 |

 | THE REASON EVERYBODY COMES TO RICK'S (and plays it again) | John Hamler | Short Story | 4 | 0.94 | Aug 24, 2011 |
Summary:Casablanca was on TV AGAIN tonight... NO. I did not sit and watch it this time. Instead, I ran over to the computer and posted this story AGAIN. Thinking: How can I incorporate this essay into my novel? For it is quite salient... **** By the way: This is not meant to be serious film criticism. I just hope you can relate to my enthusiasm. Enjoy! Chapters: |
 | Dust Bowl | farfinagle | Poetry | 6 | 0.60 | Aug 14, 2011 |
Summary:Watched part of an NBC special about the jobless in Millen, Georgia tonight. What struck home were the similarities of the present to the dust bowl era of the great depression.I am sickened by government mismanagement. If we behaved in the same manner as our elected constituents, we would have ALL lost our jobs long ago. Chapters: |
 | "Double Down" in Texas. | Odin Roark | Short Story | 3 | 0.16 | Aug 7, 2011 |
Summary:This is not a solicitation for religious debate, for I have not the time or patience to engage in such practice. But, these few words are a call for attention to what's happening in our "leadership" competition. This is but an opinion. No more. No less. There are facts to support same, but the posting of the quotes would take up too much paper space. Let this suffice:

 | HEY, WHO SAID... | Odin Roark | Short Story | 3 | 0.15 | Jul 18, 2011 |
Summary:At times, the world seems bent on just complaining. I’ve come to a conclusion: Show me someone “conscious,” and I’ll show you someone who doesn’t have time to bitch about some ache in his or her ass, head, or heart. Age? What’s that? Chapters: |
 | Stuffication Syndrome | Odin Roark | Short Story | 3 | 0.13 | Jul 14, 2011 |

 | Behind the Eightball | Sabrae74 | Short Story | 7 | 0.32 | Jun 10, 2011 |
Summary:This is a political protest piece designed to wake up the subconsience mind of the reader. To have the reader always questioning the status quo. I really would like to get the honest feedback of what type effect it brought apon the reader if any. Chapters: |
 | OBAMA SLAYS THE DEMON | brosna11 | Poetry | 9 | 0.30 | May 7, 2011 |
Summary:Some passions may be aroused by this tribute. I'm not an 'eye for an eye' person but can understand the urge for justice in the Old Testament sense. This assassination was more a prevention of future tragedies than merely a revenge killing. Terrorists must assume someone will want to see justice done. I felt the need to see Obama as an avenging angel in the Old Testament line. Chapters: |
 | Coffee and the NarcoTrade | The Coffee Lady | Short Story | 13 | 0.31 | May 4, 2011 |
Summary:I'm a local expert on narcotrafficking: we've personally known dozens of drug lords and many who work in their fiefdoms, as well as DEA agents. I'm asked occasionally to write articles for blogs from my experience working with coffee and how narcotrafficking has affected our lives and work. Thought I'd post this new article I just wrote. All the statistics and facts are true--believe it or not.Chapters: |

 | THE WORLD WAS TOO MUCH WITH HER | farfinagle | Poetry | 9 | 0.86 | Apr 18, 2011 |
Summary:I once had an acquaintence whose sister committed suicide and murder by taking her life and the lives of her children. In her suicide note, she stated she couldn't stand the thought of them living without her. What causes seemingly rational people to do monstrous things? And why do other people manage to surmount and survive monstrous circumstances? Perhaps the answer lies in interpretation - both personal and societal. Chapters: |
 | Film Land Darkly | Odin Roark | Poetry | 7 | 0.79 | Mar 31, 2011 |
Summary:Ever notice how difficult it is to find a worthwhile film on cable, Netflix or any number of competitors vying for our limited time to be entertained and empowered? I'm all for "escape" but miss the percentage of challenging and thoughtful cinema that used to balance the choices. Chapters: |
 | WHERE ARE THE POLAR BEARS? | brosna11 | Poetry | 6 | 0.11 | Jan 27, 2011 |
Summary:Global warming is real. But it's misnamed. The Arctic is warming and we're cooling down here. More snow, more cold, inspite of all the hot air in Washington. Even Tennessee has snow. Parts of Texas loook like Vermont. Vermont looks like the Tundra. We're still digging out from 3 storms. Street corners look like expert ski trails. It isn't just me, is it?
Chapters: |
 | Black Swan Essay | Angelus | Short Story | 6 | 0.63 | Jan 14, 2011 |
Summary:I go to the movies often. In addition, I like to write about the movies I watch in order to express my opinion and the relationship it may have to my personal life or the life of others. Chapters: |
 | The Brainiac Time Machine | maxkeanu | Short Story | 8 | 0.11 | Jan 9, 2011 |
Summary:I'm pissed off. It's always the gun. Gun manufactures the world over make a dangerous product with no other purpose but to inflict damage on human beings, and for profit... this is insane! And we sit and watch like Gooney Birds the carnage and destruction throughout our country and history... Chapters: |
 | DEMOCRACY IN THE BALANCE | brosna11 | Poetry | 11 | 0.24 | Jan 9, 2011 |
Summary:Sowing the seeds of anger and resentment has brought us to the scene of violence in Arizona where a child was murdered (born 9/11/01) and many others and a congresswoman lies in critical condition after surgery. Fox News shares the blame. Rush Limbaugh & all the other hate mongers should be silenced. If you disagree, it's still a free country, but you know that you are guilty without trial. It's too obvious. Chapters: |
 | Horrificomonica Opening of the 112th | Odin Roark | Poetry | 5 | 0.76 | Jan 5, 2011 |
Summary:Yes, free speech and persuasive argumentation is still afforded citizens of America. But, what price might we have to pay in the future if we wish to express verifiable truth, rather than twisted opinions at best, and outright lies at worst. Middle-Class, an endangered species. Free enterprise was never designed to eliminate the middle class, but bought and paid for re-designers are attempting to change that. Chapters: |
 | Paranoia and so forth | brosna11 | Poetry | 8 | 1.00 | Jan 2, 2011 |
Summary:Just another mental health rant--assembled from parts found in a drawer--intended to elucidate a dark subject for most of us. This one is a bit rambly as it chugs along. Drawn from some personal experience, some acquaintances and reading ads for support groups and guru services. Shamans deserve a lot of respect. The real ones, anyway.
Unrestrained reactions particularly welcome.
Chapters: |
 | Sunrise for a Greedy 2% | Odin Roark | Poetry | 10 | 1.28 | Dec 4, 2010 |
Summary:Try as I might, it's difficult to stay focused on lyrical images after today's Senate vote. So, bear with me as I share a poeditorial...and hopefully those bastards are made to keep a guilty sharp eye over their shoulders from this day forward.Chapters: |
 | My Son & My Sleep | MamaWelch | Short Story | 6 | 1.53 | Oct 1, 2010 |
Summary:An essay written in response to the barrage of advice (and unspoken judgement) as it relates to how I choose to handle my son's sleeping arrangements. I would like to see opinions on how this piece reads, if it speaks to anyone that relates to it, or other opinions offered.Chapters: |
 | Abstinence Education | mike b | Short Story | 1 | 0.84 | Sep 15, 2010 |
Summary:I just read an article saying that 1/3 of the sex ed courses in the U.S. don't include education on birth control. I thought I would republish this piece.Chapters: |
 | Rallying Point | jpb2ndchance | Poetry | 6 | 0.71 | Sep 13, 2010 |
Summary:A gentle (I hope) really bad poem with a politically pertinent (I hope again) question. The future, such as it may be, needs a move away from kneejerk political irrationalities of the past. I wish not to offend only to prod forward.
