Summary:

A short story I wrote for a little girl who loved fairy tales. If you've read chapters 1 and 2 of my Novel, "Midnight Man," this story will probably sound familiar. But I hope you will still be able to enjoy this story on its own merits. I would like to publish this story in some sort of short story collection or anthology, along with several other short stories I've written, either with other authors or by myself. So let me know if anyone else is interested in doing something like that.

When Grace and her friends survive a Short Gamma Ray Burst that decimates the majority of the southern hemisphere's human population, fashion, uni, her band, and her old life become the least of her worries. Just surviving is enough of a headache. Her journey north, from the city to the country through a nuclear winter, and eventually to refugee ships fleeing Australia for Europe, sees her face sickness, starvation, fear and the death of loved ones, as well as the challenges of leadership and the miserable treatment meted out to refugees by people smugglers. In a sink or swim situation, how will this teen find the strength to survive? Thankfully, Grace's one true strength has always been her ability to "float".

The Goopeater is the magical coming-of-age tale of Arya, a 13-year-old boy from San Francisco who is tormented by bullies in the school for eating "goop". In the wake of an accident that has left his once-vibrant mother a husk of her former self, Arya clings to the only bond left: an old, battered copy of an ancient book about good versus evil. One night, he is sucked through a crack in his floorboards and drawn into a magical world. Guided by the book which is the very last copy left, he travels the land, meeting a sage who has walked the earth since the beginning of time, monkey warriors and fearsome demons. Arya soon discovers that this new world is, in fact, an old world, and that he has stepped into the story of the Ramayana, the setting and characters before him mirroring the pages of the book that he prizes so dearly. When his book is stolen by the villain of the story, the demon king Anavaar, who wants to erase history and rewrite it from his own vantage point, Arya must embark on his own quest to retrieve the beloved keepsake. Aided by a mysterious Medicine Woman and guided by the principles of ancient warrior training, he overcomes the trials of the demons. In facing his fears, he learns that the Medicine Woman is indeed an embodiment of his mother's Higher Self, the true soul of the kind and vibrant mother he remembers, and that Anavaar is actually a conglomerate of the bullies that torment his daily existence. Realizing that he is not alone and coming to terms with his heritage, Arya is able to move forward with the battle, accept his mother's death, and finally go home where he is no longer known as the Goopeater.

I only started this yesterday and anyone who knows my work knows I usually write horror. For a change, I thought it would be fun to have a go at writing a children's book. The age group I have in mind is the 6-10's and I would love any general feedback on the main feel of it so far. The basic story line is that a pair of old women move to a large housing estate. They are an odd pair but it turns out they are much more than this. The Twist sisters are bent on turning all the children in the area into 'the unhealthiest little morsels we can muster.' They own a large van, not unlike a black, ice-cream van, and it sells tasty food but food that makes your average burger outlet seem like a healthy option. My writing penchant is humour, so this one is unusual for me, but had to be written. Whether I should have posted it on tNBW is another matter. I find the saturation promotional advertising of up-coming tv programs to be extremely irritating. One in particular that was doing the rounds really p'd me off. As I lay in bed one night trying to sleep I got quite incensed. I could not sleep until I had grabbed my laptop computer and wrote down what was bounding around inside my skull. This is the result.

I have done a few minor alterations/editing, I think it reads a little easier. Still some work to do though. Young man involved in horse breedng, works with his father who dies whilst out riding. Tale of how the young man buys a new stallion. Then it is stolen, recovered, he is threatened, and shot at. Until eventually he discovers who the horse is and why people want him. There is also romance in the air when he meets a young woman and falls in love.

Old reviews will not always match up with the chapter that it is attached to. This is in essence a memoir of my life in an orphanage, but I use composite characters and am not sure it qualifies as "memoir" for the contest. I will let the judges decide that.
