Summary:Kyrie Riddel and Cartophyllus Le Nécromant working as investigators for Prime Minister Spencer Cavendish, Duke of Devonshire and Coregent of the Kingdom of Ghaescagony discover Kyrie's former business partner, a smuggler named Edsal Halleck, murdered after she threatened to kill him because of his failure to pay a debt. But Edsal Halleck was murdered by magic that melted his eyes into red tears, burned out his pineal gland. When Cartophyllus attempts to speak to Halleck’s dead soul to lean what happened he discovers that in violation of the laws of magic, Halleck's soul has been destroyed. In a race against time, the two begin to search for clues to who might have wanted Halleck dead, who would have the power to destroy his soul, and who might have the motive to destroy him in that way. With the city watch intent on finding Kyrie guilty, and Eight Lords Inquisitor increasing concern that Cartophyllus is committing the darkest acts of blasphemy, the two follow a trail of clues across the city of London into the office of the Prime Minister himself to stop a plot to murder the Prince of Wales and so that Spence Cavendish can ascend to the thrown.
