![]() | The Search for Wimpy Bumbuster (rewrite) | opsimath | Novel | Literary Fiction | 0 | n/a | May 5, 2008 |
Summary:This is a spoof of the career of a notorious fugitive and his mistress and of the attempts of the FBI to find them, and also of aspects of contemporary U.S. life such as our preoccupation with and ignorance of nutrition and exercise, and a banking industry that facilitates easy movement of proceeds from criminal activity. Although I hope it is funny, I changed the genre from humor to literary fiction because deeper meaning emerged in the first 18 chapters. I very much appreciated reviews on the first submission, hope this is improved, and welcome any and all suggestions.Chapters:

![]() | The First | Danny Webwon | Novel | Horror | 0 | n/a | Apr 30, 2008 |
Summary:My story is a fictional account of the First Black serial killer in the US. It takes place in the 1920's and is told from the twisted point of view of our central character. For that era he would have been considered "evil" nowdays we would label him a sociopath and study his mind. I am looking for feedback on everything, this is my first attempt at a project like this and any and all feedback is welcome. I did use several poems from Langston Hughes, Claude McKaye, and a quote from Marcus Garvey to help capture the mood and atmosphere of the time. I also wrote several poems under the names of Hiawatha Wiggins in honor of one of my kids favorite cartoon characters Chief Wiggins from The Simpsons, and i also used the name "Jumpin" Joe Benton for a little variety. This is all new to me so i hope i can live up to your standards. Thank you.Chapters:
![]() | Providence | becket | Novel | Historical Fiction | 4 | n/a | Apr 30, 2008 |
Summary:Providence is the story of an American tall ship's voyage around Cape Horn to San Francisco. The story is set in 1872. It is also a story about character transformation. I wrote the story to appeal to the readership established by the late Patrick O'Brian. If he were alive, I hope he would approve of my effort as his inspiration is very evident. My goal is to set the reader on board the deck of an American clipper. I want my reader to not only imagine being there, but to also imagine working the ship and feeling the courage of the men who manned her. The characters in Providence are unique. This novel is about heroism, but courage is not limited to physical bravery in Providence. Kayleigh MacKenna, my heroine, is as much a hero as the ship's captain. Her story will appeal to men and women alike. The lyrical beauty and awesome might of the sea should appeal to everyone. It has for centuries. This novel was meant to accompany a good bottle of wine, an easy chair, and an evening away from the TV and the 21st Century. Escape awhile. Tell me if you do so.Chapters:
![]() | What About Me? (Re-write) | Darklight | Novel | Commercial Fiction | 4 | n/a | Apr 29, 2008 |
Summary:This is a major re-write of the novel based on the great feedback I've received from reviewers here. The first chapter is entirely new, and I've decided to delay the introduction of a couple of the characters a bit because I got the impression the back and forth was confusing some readers. I think this is essentially a chick lit story, but I've received some great feedback from the men here, so guys, please don't be scared off. Nicole is a single working mother in her late thirties. At the beginning of the novel she finds that she is pregnant with the child of her younger, unemployed live-in boyfriend. As the story progresses, we find out how she deals with the pregnancy, learn more about how she came to be in this seemingly dead-end relationship and why she stays, and ultimately get to see her create the life she's always dreamed of, but not without some hurdles along the way. Review wise, I am interested in any and all feedback, from the smallest nits to comments on story flow, dialogue, etc. Feel free to jump in and review any chapter -- I don't mind if you don't start at the beginning.Chapters:

![]() | A Gypsy Among Gypsies | Nathan B. Childs | Novel | Memoir | 5 | n/a | Apr 22, 2008 |
Summary:A Gypsy Among Gypsies is the story of my nomadic adolescence, living by my wits in the age of sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll. While American youth were growing their hair, experimenting with psychotropic drugs and protesting the Vietnam War, I was running for my life to Alaska, hoping to outdistance my troubled past and vanquish the demons in my head. I knew my past was dark, but I did not know it all. The storyline is a progressive quest for adventure, self-discovery, and enlightenment with more twists and turns than a Texas sidewinder: from a six-month cruise in the Caribbean to a county jail in California; from a cabin in the Sierra Nevada to a remote river camp in the Trinity Mountains; from the Aleutian Islands to Hawaii. Wrapped in a riddle with psychological and paranormal overtones, the story embodies the adolescent spirit of romance, rebellion and idealism, and celebrates the contention that given even less than half a chance, life not only endures...it prevails.Chapters:
![]() | Once Upon A Time In Brooklyn | Paul Mackenzie | Novel | Humor | 2 | n/a | Apr 22, 2008 |
Summary:Okay so after a year of reviews from everyone on the site, and after some soul searching, some serious edits, rewrites and revisions I am now reposting my book, Redemption Don't Come Cheap. It is now called - Once Upon A Time In Brooklyn - and I hope you like it. The story opens in 1964 when three nine year-old boys from diverse backgrounds view the movie Goldfinger for the twentieth time and see no problem in emulating their hero by painting the baby sister of one of the boys bright red, from neck to toes. Fortunately, the baby takes it all very well, and is unharmed, but the aftermath of the boys’ punishment rips their friendship apart. In fact, they barely talk for thirty years until a break-in at a local store, a twist of fate, and a series of letters from the grave inexplicably and simultaneously draw them back to the scene of the crime. Here they reveal multiple ‘long kept’ secrets under the stress of a new, shared predicament and it becomes clear that at least one of them may have to die to save the other two.Chapters:

Summary:I came up with the perfect excuse for why I'd be spending so much time with Gabe. Okay, so with Sam there could never be a good reason for me spending time with Gabe, but this would have to do: The Tri-County Martial Arts Tournament. I would explain to Sam that I have a burning desire to kick some serious tail at the tourney and Gabe was going to be my own private tutor. Yikes. He would hate it. But it beat telling him the truth. Hey, Sam, guess what? Gabe is actually a higher being. He was sent here to find me. My migraines - well, I've been meaning to tell you this, but I really do see dead people, and all sorts of scary stuff, but it's okay, because you see, Sam, I'm The Seer. That's right, I'm The Seer. And I'm the only thing standing between a race of higher beings that you've never heard of before and utter annihilation. I have to spend hours with Gabe every week because I'm the Obi-Wan to their Princess Leia. I'm their only hope. He'd call for the Straightjacket Brigade immediately. Who'd believe a story like that--especially with a history of mental illness in the family? No, The Tri-County Martial Arts Tournament would have to do.Chapters:

Summary:Knighthawk and I are co-writing this "urban fantasy" novel. The main character (Oli) is from my previous novel which some of you may have reviewed. This is a whole new story. We're doing a lot of front-end work - establishing three acts, outlining the scenes, developing and nailing down character arcs and through-lines before doing the real nitty gritty of developing the prose. But we were eager to see your reaction to the "tone" of the story, the prose style, and if you find it compelling. In other words, would you buy it? Summary:This is raw, a work in progress. I'm taking a risk here, going out of my comfort zone by putting up something that's not yet finished. I’m hoping you’ll see some growth from me in this. Sapphire Reign takes place almost 10 years after Kings & Queens. I’d appreciate reviews from readers, who've read my first book, since they can (hopefully) see what I’m doing differently and if it’s working, but anyone is welcome to read this. However, since it is a sequel, spoilers abound. So only proceed if you have no intention of reading Book 1.My mini-sum now: In a world where wickedness is exalted and an evil agenda is corrupting the young and innocent, a 26-year-old woman, trapped in the grip of agony, receives a glimmer of hope and battles heaven and hell to reclaim the happiness that's been stripped from her. ***Minor change. ![]() | Eddie and the Boxcar Painter | Domain of Junie | Novel | Literary Fiction | 1 | n/a | Apr 16, 2008 |
Summary:There was a bit of the Don Quixote in Eddie Young—that is if the “Don” were a social assassin (instead of social misfit), was driven by demon ambition (instead of misplaced chivalry) and whose Dulcinea was Meredith… or whichever co-host then occupied the seat beside Matt Laur. Matt, of course, was the final most worthy opponent in an army of windmills. Eddie would tilt all but Matt. Matt he would topple—and once toppled he would trample…. And, all this was inside Eddie’s head. Eddie was an investigative reporter for a small Boston television station. The successful completion of his latest assignment would easily catapult him right up to the anteroom of Studio One-A, Rockefeller Center. From there he’d find a way in. But that wasn’t the only thing inside Eddie’s head. To say “still waters run deep” is to admit you haven’t a clue as to the wild torrent surging and swirling in the deepest depths of some brains. Eddies was one. The raging currents down there were ancestral, archetypal and deeply sinister… And it was a part of him that might soon demand expression.Chapters:

![]() | When Two Trails Become One | Marilyn Johnson | Novel | Romance | 2 | n/a | Apr 16, 2008 |
Summary:"When Two Trails Become One" has a western flair that takes place in 1972, with flashbacks to 1940, and mainly centers on Jessie and Clayton as they essentially find each other again after about three decades. A "loveless marriage" and a less than fulfilling "relationship" start Jessie looking back on her past, which begins to virtually overlap with the present. In numerous twists and turns, the story explores the complexities of human nature, highlighting qualities relating to identity, beliefs, and love in various forms. The story opens with Jessie feeling "annoyed that her seclusion is in danger of being interrupted by 'some city slicker' on horseback who wouldn't have the foggiest notion of how to find his way back down the mountain after dark." Her feelings about Jace Edwards, her live-in lover, take something of a turn, and saying "I'll be back in two weeks," she heads out for a ride up on Cry Baby Mountain to the cabin she and Clayton had discovered all those years ago. Over the last thirty-one years thoughts of Clayton had surfaced at random and usually at the most inconvenient times. Her father viewed Clayton as a 'worthless drifter' and had told Jessie she was never to lay eyes on him again, and Clayton felt Jessie didn't stand up for him. As the narrative moves back and forth in time marking certain experiences that may lead to a reunion of sorts, Jessie and Clayton strive to reconcile their individual motivations and responses. When she seemingly goes missing, a rescue team takes action and the sheriff commences an investigation into 'who attacked Jessie up on Cry Baby Mountain.' In the concluding pages of the story, the sheriff focuses a degree of attention toward Dakota Jay, a longtime friend of both Jessie and Clayton. A journal entry from Clayton furnishes some potentially unexpected information, and Jessie ponders whether or not, in her overzealous quest to find Clayton, maybe she had overlooked some important details. With elements of suspense and emotion, this offering is designed to capture the imgination as well as to provoke thought. The possibility of a sequel is left open with Jessie heading down "a dirt road with Clayton's blue hand-painted truck just ahead" and thinking to herself, "sometimes love isn't so much about what you give as it is what you don't give."Chapters:

![]() | Struggling to Breathe | Sarah Elizabeth Ashcombe | Novel | Romance | 8 | n/a | Apr 9, 2008 |
Summary:Anna is a cellist with the London Chamber Orchestra and her fiancé Charles is an investment banker; they live in Chelsea, London England. Charles isolates Anna; their relationship has left her feeling dependent and insecure. Charles has asked Anna to marry him but he hasn’t shown interest in planning a wedding date. The abuse is subtle and insidious; she doesn’t sleep well and rarely sees her family and friends. Throughout the story Charles’s moods swing capriciously between charm and contempt. He can be cruel; using lies, ridicule and fear to keep her off balance. The emotional abuse slowly erodes her self-esteem, blinding her to the truth of his character. The first chapter unfolds as Anna learns of the sudden death of her beloved grandmother. Anna and Charles are having breakfast in his Chelsea flat the morning after her parents’ telephone call. This moment is when the reader begins to understand Charles’s lack of empathy and his use of recriminations to hurt her. Anna is eating the birthday cake she made for him while Charles is finishing his breakfast impatiently, putting his papers and laptop into his briefcase. Anna is eating for comfort, trying her best to maintain her composure. Charles ignores her sadness and reminds her that she shouldn't be eating the cake and his critical stares tell her he doesn't approve. It is important to him that Anna be slim and attractive so that she will make a favorable impression on his friends. Anna places the cake in the trash bin and watches as Charles smiles smugly before turning to leave. The book goes on to describe the weekend house party where the abuse intensifies and the reader is drawn into Anna’s fear. During the weekend she endures the same thoughtless behavior the girlfriends of his friends silently accept. The reader will be able to see what Anna will not believe; that Charles is an insecure and deeply troubled man who uses Anna’s misery to feel a sense of empowerment. Anna’s grief and her friendship with a fellow musician, George, help her to eventually find the strength to end the abusive relationship with Charles. George is a pianist with the orchestra and they often practice their solo pieces together. George’s love and tenderness encourage Anna to focus on her music and break free from the fear and chaos that has surrounded her life. Her grandmother was a free spirit and a gifted musician who lived her life with passion and humor. She was very close to Anna and she gave her a love of classical music. She knows her grandmother wanted her to be more independent, but Anna wants desperately to be loved by Charles. When her grandmother died she left her home in Hampstead to Anna’s parents. During the long afternoons when Anna is packing her grandmother’s belongings she reads her letters and looks through her photo albums. In a time when expectations were placed on women, her grandmother had chosen her own life. She was a composer and Anna’s grandfather was a violinist. The photographs, love letters and diaries provide Anna with glimpses into her grandmother’s triumphs and struggles. The love and admiration her grandparents shared inspires Anna to hold onto her dreams of being a concert cellist and end her relationship with Charles. In the final chapter Anna leaves Charles and George finally tells her he has loved her for years. Anna wants to believe that she and George will be happy but in her heart she knows Charles will never let her go. I am hoping to receive feedback that will help me to develop my characters and their relationships with each other. I would like readers to feel a connection to Anna and her struggle to find her dreams.Chapters:

Summary:A Jonathon Franzen version of The Big Chill. It's a colorful, wild, witty and interesting psychedelic Indian road story that updates much that 1970's generations experienced while away from home, on the road and going through the rites of passage that formed them. It explores the spiritual trail taken by many searching for a greater meaning of life in India. This is a narrative from an urbanite ex-punk rocker, ex-small time crook, ex-drug addict, 'X gener', who quite enjoyed doing yoga once a week at his local gym. There is murder, tragedy, terrorists, romance, western scepticism, a dash of eastern mysticism and even a revolution. It is the author's autobiographical experiences in India 2006. "At times as garish as a Bollywood flick and reminiscent of fellow Australian Gregory David Roberts' Indian adventure "Shantaram," this novel packs an honest, if slightly profane, punch." - Publishers Weekly (USA)Chapters:

Summary:This fiction story is carried by drama and spots of dry humor This is based on a true account of a man who was twice homeless. The man named Chace Worthy is a fictional charater based on a real person and the story, although fiction, is based on the accounts that he told me about his life. The thing that drove me to write the story was how the man spoke of always being in need of stangers to care for him, giving him food, water and spare change or clothes. He said he wanted to have a chance to care for strangers and give back, and now his desires is to become a doctor. I like when people point out the error of my ways, more than getting praise, because this is what helps me refine the story. javierChapters:
