Summary: Kelly Broden is a precocious ten-year-old with a propensity for getting into trouble. Her aunt claims she has a self-destructive personality– like her mother before her. Her life might seem safe and secure, growing up in Middleton, a small, closely knit community in the foothills of the Appalachians. But trouble returns to the small town in the summer of 1935. Evil reveals itself first in Kelly’s nightmares, as a tiger stalking the shadows, looking for prey... looking for her.
The undercurrent of evil hits the small town of Middleton hard, clinging to the shadows; hinting at a deeper meaning rooted in the past. It is up to Chief Broden, Kelly’s father, to discover the source and put the pieces together as a rash of murders plague the nearby train depot; remains of the dead are found buried in multiple sites around the area. Autopsies reveal that the murders range from as recent as two months to almost a decade in the past. The killer buries its dead and the victims are the ‘fringe element.’ Wanderers, hoboes that follow the rail line. Untraceable. They are forgotten men who inspire little sympathy from the media or respected citizens of the nearby towns: Springdale, Berritts Hills and Middleton. Apathy and lack of solid evidence make this rash of murders difficult to solve.
This is the first of a Trilogy. It has not bee professionally edited. I will take any and all feedback. Chapters: |
