 | Why not be of service? | DebrahsWritings | Poetry | Religion and Spirituality | 6 | 1.52 | May 15, 2008 |
Summary:I went to a workshop, and meet this young woman. She is from Puerto Rice and has not yet master English Writing skills. As I was sitting in the workshop feeling out of place I began to wonder where I belonged. Then we were given an assignment to write an outline for our essays. I noticed right away the young woman seemed to be having difficulty getting started. Something that seems so natural to me as a writer is rather difficult for her. I asked her a few questions to halp her get started then about 1/2 way through the outline she suddenly took off and ran with the assignment. The workshop was on service learning. When I walked in the door I had no idea what I was up for. By the end I had received much more than I had given.Chapters: |
 | Cruciform (rewrite) | Pete Lyons | Poetry | Religion and Spirituality | 0 | 0.64 | Mar 25, 2008 |
Summary:Mixed feelings about religion and nature clash in a short poem interweaving symbols of the cross and the seasons (among others).
A reworked version that addresses some of the previous comments and is a lot less ambiguous and truer to my original intent.
Any and all comments welcome.Chapters: |

 | Pieces | All4Maggie | Novel | Romance | 4 | n/a | Mar 1, 2008 |
Summary:This is a story about a single mother returning to her hometown and her family that she left more than sixteen years before. It is a twist on my own story, with the people in my life being portrayed -- fictionally, of course -- in the story. This is my first time submitting any of my work for "strangers" to read. I appreciate constructive criticism, but please be gentle :)Chapters: |
 | Root Hog or Die | vern | Novel | Memoir | 27 | n/a | Feb 23, 2008 |
Summary:Revised: The first four chapters have been revised taking reviews into consideration. Also, the original Chapter 3 is now Chapter 2, while 4 is 3, and 2 has the 4 slot - all of which will effect the attached reviews. Does the shuffling help or hinder? This novel is set within an orphanage in North Carolina during the mid fifties and sixties. Though it is basically true, the characters are composite and the time lines may be occasionally altered with some literary license thrown into the mix. I am looking for ANYTHING which might improve the readability, especially with regards to characters, dialogue, description, etc. Thanks!Chapters: |
 | 2060: The Newton Prophesies | Keith Katsikas | Novel | Thrillers | 6 | n/a | Feb 20, 2008 |
Summary:Sir Isaac Newton was a brilliant scientist, a crazed chemist, even an obsessed researcher of biblical verses, but it is what few people ever knew about the reticent man that has Harvard Divinity Professor, Michael DiBianco running for his life, struggling to find answers to a mystery that not only threatens Christianity, but the very meaning of his own existence.Chapters: |
 | Death-The End or The Beginning? Edited February 10, 2008. | Dur Shacho | Poetry | Religion and Spirituality | 1 | 2.62 | Feb 11, 2008 |
Summary:This piece is presented solely to encourage thought. The questions asked-I suspect, have been asked since the emergence of conscience, thinking mankind. Obviously there are no definitive answers to these questions. However, as death is truly the only inevitable, universal experience that all creation experiences, perhaps it's worth asking these and many other questions. If nothing else realizing that your questions are shared is of value, isn't it? At least that is the motivation that prompted this poem. It is the last in a series of five poems that started with 'Why God?' Chapters: |
 | A Revelation | michael webb | Short Story | Religion and Spirituality | 3 | 1.55 | Dec 3, 2007 |
Summary:I don't know how to do this without giving too much away. A man loses everything, including his faith in God. His sister is there, never waning, to help him. His life changes and if you believe him...so could yours. There, how's that for a hook.Chapters: |
 | The Our Father--in todays language for teenagers | Dur Shacho | Short Story | Editorial and Opinion | 1 | 1.92 | Oct 21, 2007 |
Summary:I have edited this piece to include some helpful comments from reviewers. This is solely my opinion. I do not pretend to be an expert in religions. I do however have some experience in teaching CCD and in raising seven children. My hope is that this work may cause reflection and discussion. Assuming one accepts God exists, then there can only be one.Chapters: |

Summary:Any and all feedback is appreciate.
I'm not a poet, but I am trying to explore other genres in order to improve my writing generally.
This is part of an exercise I am putting myself through where I write as the words come to me and give them life on paper without judgments or edits.Chapters: |

 | Poor White Trash | kbobwall | Novel | Memoir | 4 | n/a | Aug 3, 2007 |
Summary: I've written about my life growing up in poverty in the small town of Brighton, Illinois during the 1970's. My
book has been compared to Dave Pelzer's "A Child Called It"
because we were also reared in an abusive atmosphere where
our mother suffered from depression and obesity, but, instead of being an alcoholic, she was a prophetess. God
wanted us to go through garbage dumpsters for food and to
eventually move to a remote location in Missouri where we
lived in a cave for four years.
My childhood started out normal with love and respect from two working parents, but it was short-lived because Mom and Dad separated when I was four. Dad didn't pay child support and Mom no longer worked. We lived in cluttered, filthy, hoarding conditions. By the time I was
twenty years old, I was six feet three inches tall and
weighed one hundred and thirty pounds; I was homeless,
depressed, and suffered everyday from headaches to severe
migraines and vomiting.
I lived through a unique experience that has given me
a personal glimpse into the lifestyle and mindset of our
nation's poorest people. Billions of people in the world
live below the poverty level and nearly nineteen million
people in the U.S. suffer from a depressive illness. It's
been a long emotional journey for me to write forty-five
chapters that begin with my first visits with a mental
health counselor and then chronicles the first twenty years
of my life. I was educated in the Illinois public school
system through the ninth grade when I was pulled from school so we could live a better life for God without the
influence of our sinful society.
I love my parents, but they are the strangest people I
have ever met. I didn't write my memoir out of hate or
revenge. I began writing after a counselor suggested it to
relieve stress.Chapters: |
