 | In the Shadow of Sin: the Confessions of a Sex Addict | N. L. Snowden | Novel | Commercial Fiction | 3 | n/a | Apr 27, 2010 |
Summary:Joe Thames, the protagonist, is afflicted with sexual addiction. This book, based on research and interviews with sex addicts, shows the unfolding of an innocent boy into a sexual predator. The character, as most sex addict are, is clueless to the pain he inflicts on the women he courts and marries and has affair with them. I'm hoping that someone who wouldn't go to the self-help section of a book store would read fiction and recognize themselves and try to get into therapy to fix a very devastating addiction.Chapters: |

Summary:Sometimes poetry, like music, doesn't need to have a meaning or tell a story. We're trying out sounds, images, structures, putting old words into new contexts and new words into old contexts. Just for the fun of it. And then perhaps, meaning, or better still, layers of meaning begin to emerge.
Think of the two different types of 'folk' as symbols, like A and B. Then try them in different contexts - science vs arts, modern vs old, certainty vs uncertainty. Where does it take you?Chapters: |
 | Never Really Alone | MJ Stephens | Novel | Literary Fiction | 17 | n/a | Mar 22, 2009 |
Summary:One woman’s journey to find her own voice, separate from her twin sister; the more dominant personality of the two. Though death separates them early, the co-dependent relationship Sarah had with her sister remains, and she's unable to let go; even fully admitting to her death is not possible. Child Psychiatry in the 1950's & 60's, somewhat a child itself, is not always the most gentle solution. So, dealing with these issues through her adolescence and teen years, Sarah finally leaves home after a drunken binge, ending up in Phoenix, Arizona. Hoping to put her sister and the past behind her, she begins to settle in to try and re-invent herself as one individual instead of one-half of a whole. But wishing away a lifetime of experiences is like asking the sun to dim because its light is too bright for your eyes.
Sarah’s mission is to learn that she must live with and accept the past, so that she can get on with the business of living in the present and planning for the future. To realize that looking at her own face in the mirror, and knowing that she is the only person who should be looking back is a battle worth fighting.

 | Root Hog or Die (Newly revised) | vern | Novel | Memoir | 5 | n/a | Oct 1, 2008 |
Summary: The first three chapters have been revised and rearranged for the strongest start competition. The novel is posted in its entirety so you may read at your leisure (DISABLED CHAPTERS WILL BE ENABLED FOR ANY NEW REVIEWERS GOING BEYOND CHAPTER 3). Old reviews will not always match up with the chapter that it is attached to. This is in essence a memoir of my life in an orphanage, but I use composite characters and am not sure it qualifies as "memoir" for the contest. I will let the judges decide that. I hope this final go through will make it ready to publish, so any comments whatsoever will be appreciated. Especially interested in the new flow pattern. Opinions? Thanks for your help and advice.
