|McShane #3 - Hurricane or Homicide||j l mo||Novel||Mystery and Crime||4||n/a||Oct 8, 2014|
Summary:A Mini-Mystery for grown ups. This story will be complete in five chapters, and come in around 13000 words. I need help with any/all nits; from grammar, spelling, syntax, etc. ****I'm in need of those with sharp eyes for continuity. Are the characters in the right places from chapter to chapter?**** Of course, even if you don't "review", thanks so much for reading.
|The Last Grimoire||Linkun Chen||Novel||Fantasy||1||n/a||Sep 27, 2014|
Summary:This is mostly just for fun. The Last Grimoire (working title) is a crime noire written to a fantasy/scifi setting. I've never written anything in the fantasy or scifi genres before. But I've always wanted to, ever since I read Amy S's Acts of Academia. To get the most out of sampling my story, I recommend reading up to chapter 4, which is the end of the exposition. I'm willing to bet that it'll be worth the wait if you have the patience to get that far. (I'll upload chapter 4 on Friday around 5PM) Because of school, I don't have a lot of time to write. So nothing I've written so far has been edited. As of right now, the writing is pretty ugly, I know. I can do better, but because I'm not a natural writer (I've been told I'm more of a natural story-teller), it will take me some time to clean everything up. (Hopefully I'll have it written the way I want it by this weekend) I wanted to get the bones of my exposition done first. Because the writing is still so raw, any feedback would be great. But mostly, I want to know if you liked the story and would be interested reading more of it. If no one wants to read it, I'll move on the something else - maybe something more in my natural genre.

|The Midnight Man - Part II||Linkun Chen||Novel||Mystery and Crime||2||n/a||Jun 14, 2014|
Summary:Part 2 of my mystery Novel - The Midnight Man. The story takes place after the MC from Part 1 returns to his original body and regains his memories of his past life as Nicolai Ivanoff. You don't need to have read Part 1 to appreciate Part 2, but Part 2 would probably be more enjoyable if you had already read Part 1.
|Mystery of the Black Hollow||theLink||Novel||Young Adult||2||n/a||Jun 2, 2014|
Summary:SUMMARY: Three young friends are determined to discover the truth about the mysterious Black Hollow that plagues their clan. Patrollers near the Hollow are regularly disappearing, but the clan’s Elders seem unable to do anything about it. EOD is the female leader of the group, wise for her age, inquisitive, balanced, and a peace maker. WOC, also a girl, is her best friend. Energetic, impulsive, brave, and intuitive, Woc is the driving force behind their commitment to face the Hollow. STRAH, a boy, is bright, logical, cautious, and fearful. The trio seeks the help and counsel of ODO, an old hermit who long ago lost two offspring to the Hollow. To ensure the three are ready to face the dangers ahead, Odo requires them to meet several difficult challenges, most of which the reader can participate in. After each success, Odo shares a clue about the Hollow in the form of a riddle. Together, the trio faces his challenges, sorts out the clues, and visits the Hollow. They watch in horror as another clan brother is taken by a large beast, they figure out what lures the patrollers into the Hollow, and they face a beast, themselves, head on and survive. They leave the Hollow armed with sufficient knowledge to ensure that no clan member will ever again be taken, but some of the Hollow's mysteries remain for the Elders to decipher. All three come into their own as they together face the hermit’s challenges and the harsh realities of the Black Hollow. In the process, their friendship deepens and matures, and each one is changed. But, as the surprise ending reveals, all is not as it seems.

|The Mirrors --- strongest_start_seven||Nathan H.||Novel||Science Fiction||8||n/a||Jun 22, 2013|
Summary:My novel is a science-fiction mystery/ thriller. I am using the epistolary style, so as to maximize the suspenseful mood. Without giving too much away, it is set in a secret research facility in which things start to go subtly, and then dramatically wrong, eventually leading to a sinister crisis of identity in which no-one can be trusted, and the nature of humanity itself is questioned. It is highly sciency, and much serious physics study has gone into this. Inspiration for the tone came from Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, and Dracula by Bram Stoker. I would like to receive feedback particularly on the flow of the plot, characterization, and mood/ tone of this novel. Of course, anything you want to remark on is welcome feedback!
|About Face||Hazy Shades of Me||Novel||Literary Fiction||2||n/a||Jun 19, 2013|
Summary:Lenore Nashun knows she has one of those faces. Not the kind people think they know from somewhere, nor the kind that welcomes conversation, but the kind that makes some people avert their eyes, the kind that can cause many to avoid her in a crowd, the kind that, in its natural state, makes people sum her up before even a word is exchanged; she-devil. With her cool exterior causing a disconnect most of her life, Lenore is more than tickled when delectable Nate Dahl takes an unsolicited interest. But just over two years after falling very in love, Lenore is buried by her work as a mannequin stylist and doesn’t notice her boyfriend’s downward spiral into the depths of despair. She comes home from work one morning, after pulling an all-nighter, to discover he’s vanished. No explanation in sight, not a crumb left behind. Feeling as though someone has stolen a piece of the puzzle she’s taken a lifetime to complete, Lenore struggles with whether she should get down on her hands in knees in search of it, or simply throw the lid over the leftover fragments. Sick with worry, fear and the inability to shake the feeling she’s being watched, Lenore relies on her best friend Nikki for sanity and her new found friend Liam for safety. Nikki, as always, is an amazingly reassuring support, while Lenore is confused at finding herself yearning to be around Liam for more than protection. In the meantime, she finally hears from Nate via a facebook message where he confesses the demise of his career, hitting the bottle, an affair and even worse, fleeing from it all, hiding from Lenore; leaving her to worry, wonder and wait. Had she been living under a rock? Amidst her confusion, Lenore somehow finds herself embarking on a fresh way of seeing things, a new career and an innovative verve. In the end, it’s not the humans; oddly it’s the dolls…her mannequins that give her what she’s really been looking for most of her life; expression and a fundamental freedom from its hold.
|Tor Loken and the Death of Chief Namakagon||James_A_Brakken||Novel||Historical Fiction||3||n/a||Jun 12, 2013|
Summary:TOR LOKEN AND THE DEATH OF CHIEF NAMAKAGON is book two in the Chief Namakagon trilogy. This engaging novel is a stand-alone mystery-adventure based closely on historical records. It explores the 1886 murder of the Ojibwe leader who was found near his secret silver mine. This mine has yet to be rediscovered in spite of 13 decades of treasure hunters' efforts. Mining, railroading, and timber harvest during northern Wisconsin's wild and lawless 1880s are the background for this twisting, turning mystery centered around 19 year-old Tor Loken, his girl, Rosie, and the men from the lumber camp. Rich characters, each based on someone the author has encountered in the great north woods, fill out the cast. Events documented in the local 1880s press provide many sub-plots that become key to the dramatic conclusion of the book, soon to be published by the author/illustrator, James Brakken, who was born and raised near Lake Namakagon and who still searches for the old chief's treasure as part of his extensive research for the trilogy. The author will include, among forty original illustrations, a map showing dozens of mines, both silver and gold, active in the late 19th century near the lodge of Chief Namkagon. Book 1, THE TREASURE OF NAMAKAGON, was a general fiction semi-finalist in the 2013 ABNA competition, the equivalent of being tied for second place out of 10,000 novels entered. The author is an award-winning conservationist, poet, and outdoor writer. Although fiction, his "Chief Namakagon" series is already regarded as a solid historical account of events that took place during Wisconsin's formative years. The treasure is real as are the facts used to support this exciting wilderness mystery-adventure.
|Saving Gracie||Lucy Rice||Novel||Commercial Fiction||8||n/a||May 26, 2013|

|Dawn||J.T.Twerell||Novel||Thrillers||3||n/a||May 19, 2013|
Summary:France “lost” five nuclear warheads. North Korea “found” five nuclear warheads. A young woman from Brooklyn is the only one who can stop World War III…..and she doesn’t even know it. In a world that seems to teeter on the edge of self-distraction, this story of international intrigue follows Dawn Laskey,a thirty-three year old fashion designer, who simply went on vacation in Paris. A romantic fling leaves her in a literal flight for her life as warring forces believe she has the key to missing nuclear weapons. From the beauty and romance of Monmontre Paris to a brutal prison cell in America, Dawn is caught in a web of evil from which she seemingly can not escape. Her one hope is Detective Gerald Denton of NYPD, the only person who seems to truly believe Dawn is innocent. His challenge is to keep her alive before malicious powers destroy her and possibly the entire human race. Looking to see if the opening chapters catch the reader or if they need a stronger impact
|The Box (by LC)||Linkun Chen||Short Story||Mystery and Crime||9||0.65||Apr 27, 2013|
Summary:This a re-post. I didn't get a lot of views the first time around (only about 10 actually, it says 30, but at least half of those were me) so I was hoping to get some more feedback this time. I didn't change much. I fixed some errors that my original reviewers mentioned and I added a paragraph at the end. Thanks! This is my take on an expressionist-crime story about a dead man who wanders the world in search of his killer. It's part of a collection of short stories I'm writing between work and law school. Hope you enjoy it.
|Bluenose Intrigues - Tilting at Windmills||alkemi||Novel||Mystery and Crime||8||n/a||Apr 7, 2013|
Summary:A grisly murder introduces newly recruited detective Simon Goodyear to the peaceful little town of Barrettsport and sends him on a three month long search for a master manipulator who entangles much of the town in his nefarious schemes. Along the way, the town, a school teacher and a young graphic artist draw Simon into their much more personal intrigues. This story is both a romance and a mystery. I really appreciate all the comments I've had from reviewers, and have made numerous changes that I think have improved the story. I feel like I've added a googolplex of commas (I know that's not possible), and look forward to some new reviews of the revised text.

Summary:If you are a Star Trek fan, particularly for “The Next Generation” (TNG) series, I think (hope) you will enjoy this novel. You can expect a solid story from the TNG genre that follows the TNG universe; the same familiar cast of characters and bad guys. I did not stray from guidelines set by Paramount. ........................ Synopsis ........................ Captain Picard and crew are assigned the simple mission of escorting two alien diplomats,from a recently discovered planetary system, back to their home planet to ratify a charter with the Federation of Planets to legalizes their entry into the Federation of Planets. As the aliens board the Enterprise, Counselor Troi senses some undefined evil about the two diplomats and warns Captain Picard. The Romulans assisted by the Tal Shiar are working toward the subjugation of the Federation and the Alpha Quadrant. Picard must unravel Troi’s mystery as she is driven to near insanity by an undefined evil, and is ultimately faced with saving the Federation of Planets from extinction at the hand of the Romulans. |Must (Prequel)||kaleigh castle-maguire||Novel||Commercial Fiction||2||n/a||Oct 2, 2011|
Summary:This is the part of the longer story that precedes the part I already posted as a short story (Muse by Kaleigh M). I know some people want to know what happens next and I'll get to that as soon as possible, but I'm really interested to know what people think of what I had planned in the story before the night in David's house where Fran sees the painting for the first time. This "prequel" comprises two parts - one featuring Fran alone and one featuring David. I'd be particularly interested to know if people think they're in the right order ie I keep thinking about switching them so we start out with David painting and then go back to Fran in the coffee shop. Any thoughts appreciated.
|Machinery||jaksnipe||Novel||Science Fiction||4||n/a||May 25, 2011|
Summary:Machinery introduces the reader to an amazing scientific possibility through a rather... controversial (if not apocryphal) narrative. This installment is an introduction of sorts, hoping to spark your curiosity about both the science and the narrator. I appreciate your most brutally honest feedback. Thanks!
|Just Desserts||Stindo||Novel||Mystery and Crime||13||n/a||Mar 22, 2011|
Summary:This is a very rough, very raw, still evolving work in progress. The characters are communicating effectively in my mind, I just hope to translate their interactions effectively onto paper. ***** Chandler Jones and Dino DiGallo open a cafe at the ripe age of 22 years of age. Their similarities are many, having been best friends for the past 17 years, but their ideas and motivations for success develop different paths, opening a gap between them. Cappuccinos, lesbians, multinational wannabe gangsters and a murder investigation follow, adding chaos to deteriorating relationships, both personal and professional. How will it all end? Based loosely on my own experience, this is a departure from what I consider my 'typical' style / genre. Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated - please be brutally honest about what you like / dislike and areas of improvement. Thanks. Allen

|Torino Dreams||NMwritermom||Novel||Romance||15||n/a||Nov 23, 2010|
Summary:Snow in the high desert can only lead to one thing, one car smashing into another. That is Kate's last thought before her truck slides down a hill into a very expensive looking BMW. Even better is how the guy yells at her and basically calls her an idiot for not knowing how to drive in the snow. So why does she offer to fix the damage to Sam's car for free? Well, Sam wanting to call the cops and report the accident might have something to do with it. Kate has a serious aversion to law enforcement, and for good reason. Not that she's about to explain that to Sam. All she wants to do is fix his car up and forget it ever happened. The problem with that is that once Sam calms down and apologizes she can't seem to get him out of her head. It's dangerous for her to get close to anyone. The closer she lets him in, the more likely he'll figure out exactly what she's hiding. ***This is my first ever NANO project so any and all feedback is appreciate. Is it interesting enough to keep going with. Is the romance too slow? Are you intrigued by the secrets Kate's hiding? ***I'm posting edits so my poor new readers don't have to see the mess! Thanks for reading!
|Willing Flesh||farfinagle||Novel||Horror||2||n/a||Sep 30, 2010|

|Dangerous Distraction||Anne West||Novel||Romance||6||n/a||Jun 28, 2010|
Summary:Art historian Wiley Jones enjoys a mundane existence in the protective cocoon of academia. Surrounded by volumes of manuscripts and dusty artifacts, her carefully orchestrated life is thrown into chaos when she is encouraged to join an art recovery project based in Croatia. The moment she and her unwanted protector, undercover FBI agent Scott McCormick leave Chicago they quickly find themselves immersed in a shadowy world of dead ends and misdirection. Scott enjoys the thrill of the chase as it relates to both Wiley and their ensuing investigation. On the surface it appears a cache of pre-World War II art and artifacts have been uncovered during the demolition of an old school. But as Wiley and Scott dig deeper they soon realize that many of the pieces in the collection don’t belong. Rather that they appear to have been recently added to the find. When Frank Hamilton the current project director winds up dead, they find themselves in a race against the clock to unwind the mystery before they are either forced to leave the country or wind up dead themselves. As they struggle to sort through the confusion surrounding the art work and their relationship they come to realize that the only safe harbor may be each other and that leaves far more at risk than they thought. Thank you for any feedback. I am particularly intersted in story line continuity and voice.

Summary:In this era where science fiction is becoming science fact, technology is mixing with strongly held myths, and art is blending the chaos to shine a light on the rapid changes, we will either destroy ourselves or else learn to live in peace, without and within. This is the story of a particularly gifted young psychic, Aurora Swift, and the psychiatrist who tries to unravel her worlds, and in doing so unintentionally comes into contact with interconnected universal mysteries, dimensions, ancient beings and civilizations. Mixture of fantasy and reality genres. Mainly, the two settings are the modern day present with a bit of government conspiracy, and a sort of underworld that Aurora calls the Night World she escapes into to keep her sanity intact what with the pressures of her life. We meet a lot of other psychics in Aurora's circle and travel all over the U.S. and the world in search of some type of salvation. ** The first six or so chapters are non-linear and deliberately jarring as Aurora is experiencing a crossover of dimensions and times that will be sorted out in later chapters.// If I were to summarize the emotional stew or message of the story, it might go something like this: It is easy to wonder if our lives are worthless and actions are pointless because all will be forgotten one day. If every inventor, thinker, artist, intuitive being, and scientist followed through with this line of thinking, we’d still be in the Dark Ages or perhaps cause a new one. In this time of flourishing light, we need not allow the darkness of short-sightedness envelop us. The power is within us to make this world whatever we want it to be and become. And yes, one can make a difference with a little help from her friends.// **NOTE: I am on this site for constructive criticism. If you believe my work is only worthy of a 1 or 2 and feel like writing a snide scathing review or telling me how to write according to you, go somewhere else. My work isn't perfect, but I what I don't need is people who wish to feel superior by cutting me down or taking out their bad day on me. If you "don't get it" either ask me why something is written as it is or read something else. That I've had to explain this is sad, but there are plenty of A-holes in the world and that is reflected by similar percentages on this site. For those of you here to learn and grow and offer positive suggestions: Welcome. ---- (4/23/09 Currently reposted Chapter 1-3 and more coming soon for fans old and new).
