Summary:

This is a story I wrote some time ago (mid-to-late '70s). After I wrote it I attempted to get it published, received rejections each time I submitted it, then shelved it. After joining this site recently, I decided to post it here to see if it has any merit, which I believe, or none, which the editors who rejected it seem to believe. Note: On attempting to insert the story text, I was informed it was "Over Limit" so it will be published in two parts.

This is another vignette in the life of Alphonse "Al" Bonet. In this episode, Al leaves his wife in Tulsa and travels with his girlfriend, Debbie, to southeastern New Mexico where he finds work driving a dumptruck in the oilfields of the area.

Lily Masterson's husband Mike gets into a near fatal car accident leaving him in a coma. Lily battles with the idea of using his accident as her chance to start over and move on from their already rocky marriage. Lily's life becomes even more complicated when she meets Christopher Davis, her husbands doctor. Feelings begin to develop she isn't sure she should have and as time progresses with no change in Mike's condition, the more tempted Lily is to follow her heart.

As a result, she meets a woman physician and male journalist and the three lives are entwined, with heartwarming highs and heart-wrenching lows. Vignettes from a childhood in northern British Columbia - Canada's most western province. Growing up with the fears of hospitalization tempered with the wonders of the Canadian outdoors and our northern winters. This as a collection of chronological essays or vignettes rather than a typical story with one chapter sliding seamlessly into the next. I believe this is the best way to present this overflowing album of snapshot memories I have bolstered with stories my parents have shared with me. Thanks to the help from TNBW reviewers I’ve chosen to rewrite the first handful of chapters before continuing on. I appreciate any comments you may have and I sincerely hope you enjoy the story.

I'd better explain a couple of things which may have you scratching your head. Muti = Af for medicine, poison, etc etc. Sun-downer = a drink (or 3) imbibed at about the time the sun’s going down, being 5:30 – 6:30 around these parts. I look forward to comments.
