 | The Abolitionist and the Bushwacker | Debra Campbell-Heidlage | Novel | Historical Fiction | 1 | n/a | Apr 9, 2013 |
Summary:Originally posted, "Lovely Lucy," I am re-posting this with a prologue in order to introduce my lead character earlier in the story. A work of fiction, it is based on the life of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and his abolitionist sweetheart, Lucy Vanderpohl. The story chronicles the relationship that begins in childhood before the war and matures in spite of growing political tensions. It reaches its zenith as Lucy learns a family secret that threatens an already tenuous relationship between the man she has vowed to love and her family's commitment to social justice. The story is a redemptive work in a setting of moral dilemmas where right and wrong is not always obvious.Chapters: |

 | Les Grandes Histoires de la Famille Faux | Laura-Anne | Novel | Humor | 6 | n/a | Jun 1, 2012 |
Summary:<<< Please dip in at any chapter, they are written independently and can be read as one offs.>>>
A satirical look at an English family through 1,000 years. The story follows the history of the "Le Faux" family and their botherings with the French, the Throne, the Church, the New World, Darwinism, industrial revolutions, innumerous wars, bad fashion, poor dentistry and of course, unusual sexual predilections followed by strong cups of tea. The "Le Faux" family genealogy comes with a veracity borne through obsessive attention to third-hand accounts and an equally fervent disregard for historical fact. Any and all feedback welcome. It is meant to be tongue in cheek and absurd. Thanks, Laura xChapters: |

Summary:I WILL BE PULLING THIS DOWN SOON AND DOING A REWRITE. THOSE WHO HAVE COMMENTED SO FAR...I APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT AND WILL BE USING MUCH OF IT IN THE NEXT DRAFT.
Confederate Major Charles Greene is devastated by the outcome of the Civil War and struggles to accept the North won. In his heart and mind, he still fights the war and longs for the life the majestic Greene Plantation enjoyed before the war. The ubiquitous carpetbaggers and lowly scalawags - Southerners showing loyalty to the hated Yankee forces - add more fuel to his fire. However, all of that is only a backdrop for the real story - a family in turmoil and the road to that family's ultimate fate. As time goes by, Major Greene's family is painfully and irreversably divided as his children take opposing and confrontational paths to rebuilding their lives. The once majestic Greene Plantation fights to find its previous glory. The family division grows even deeper over the years as dirty business and backroom politics take control of the opposing sides. Over the generations, the split continues to divide the family. Will there ever come a time of forgiveness and resolution? It would appear nothing short of a miracle could ever bring the two sides together again. One thing is for certain, though. The eerie mist that often hovers over the nearby Charlton River holds many secrets. Does it hold the secret to overcomimg the deep division of the two sides of the Greene family?Chapters: |

 | Pomegranate | Keen | Novel | Historical Fiction | 5 | n/a | Mar 14, 2012 |
Summary:This romantic adventure story with dark undertones is very much in the style of Arabian Nights in that it has stories told, from many characters, within the main story about a young woman called Bidi Baba. My main fear is whether it comes across as a bit Mills & Boon - something that is easy enough to do with a desert story. And is it compelling enough... I would love any general feedback and impressions and please bear in mind its written in UK English. Many thanks in advance, KeenChapters: |

 | Shadow Wolf: Remembrance | Natalee | Novel | Romance | 14 | n/a | Apr 23, 2011 |
Summary:SHADOW WOLF SERIES: Remembrance (Cameron&Sophia), The Three Kingdoms (Aedan&Kathleen-no longer Bianca), Cursed (Ian&Kirrah).
BOOK 1: Remembrance:
Sophia considers her life pretty much normal, that is until she befriends a gigantic wolf, who happens to push her down a waterfall. Technically, the fall wasn’t so bad and she would have forgiven her four legged friend, but when she emerges from the water, she finds herself several hundred years in the past, in Scotland of all places, abandoned by the wolf. Lucky for her, she is rescued by a handsome Scotsman, or so the arrogant lout says. Really, what’s wrong with the man? One minute he drives her mad with his kisses, the next he accuses her of being a witch.
Cameron’s nights are plagued by dreams of a spirit, begging him to remember something long forgotten, and his days are tormented by a lovely stranger, who very well could be a spy from the enemy clan. What is a laird to do? Keeping the lass will only anger his mistress and cause him great distraction at the time of war, but the thought of sending her away leaves him barren.
When Sophia saves his life, he learns that maybe there is more to life than empty passion and the sound of clashing steel.

 | Amongst Ghosts | Keen | Novel | Literary Fiction | 4 | n/a | Feb 14, 2011 |
Summary:Very briefly, Amongst Ghosts is a novel about twin sisters who have too close a relationship. This suffocates each of them and ultimately becomes a destructive force. I currently have an agent interested in the book but she says I have to show what has motivated the young women to behave the way they do. So I've just written this chapter which would precede anything else in the book to try and show the defining incident that colours their future behaviours and decisions. I would really appreciate whether the voice is too old for a nearly-thirteen year old, bearing in mind she is the Victorian daughter of a country reverend. And is there anything I can do to generally improve the chapter? Lots of thanks in advance and bear in mind that the spelling is UK English. Cheers, KeenChapters: |
 | The Girl With Sand in Her Hair | Keen | Novel | Romance | 1 | n/a | Apr 5, 2010 |
Summary:I hope this novel will appeal to all who enjoyed Arabian Nights as it has many exotic stories hidden within the main plot. I wrote it after a trip to Jordan, when I fell in love with the redness of the desert and the landscape made famous by Lawrence of Arabia. It's set in 1201, a year when a terrible famine hit Egypt and there were cases of people resorting to cannibalism to survive. I would love any general feedback and thank you in advance. | Root Hog or Die (Newly revised) | vern | Novel | Memoir | 8 | n/a | Apr 12, 2009 |
Summary: The first three chapters have been revised and rearranged for the strongest start competition. The novel is posted in its entirety so you may read at your leisure (DISABLED CHAPTERS WILL BE ACTIVATED FOR ANY NEW REVIEWERS GOING BEYOND CHAPTER 3). Old reviews will not always match up with the chapter that it is attached to. This is in essence a memoir of my life in an orphanage, but I use composite characters and am not sure it qualifies as "memoir" for the contest. I will let the judges decide that (PS: I suppose it did qualify since it won that category). I'm not particulary looking for new reviews but any comments are always appreciated, especially overall opinion. Hope you enjoy. Thanks for reading. Chapters: |
 | Moving Shadows | Kay Lovell | Novel | Historical Fiction | 7 | n/a | Feb 26, 2008 |
Summary:The story is based upon real facts but with the added writers license to indulge. Romance, and intrigue are part of the story. The development of the harbour in a remote Cornish village, the leading figure of this area was a Solicitor and a Banker, the Cornish family of long standing with connections to the throne. He has an affair with a male clerk, although married, not very satisfactory and his wife eventually meets an officer in the Royal Navy, whose frigate regularly berths at Georgetown, they immediately strike up a relationship.
Poverty in a Fishing Village, a hamlet of nine houses and the wonderful backdrop of the cornish scenery provides the setting for this gentle story.
Feedback: constructive critism please, any weaknesses please point out. development suggestions.
Thanks: I would like to thank those of you that have taken the trouble to give an opinion and it has been taken on board. The rest of the book is still under construction, and yes I do use too many words. But the editing is still underway. I have only just realised that I could alter the layout, still learning you see. Ooops!Chapters: |
