Summary:19-year-old Eva has a boyfriend back home in Oregon, but what American girl can resist a Scottish accent? Romancing an Edinburgh barkeep while working abroad, she knows she's taking risks. What she doesn't expect is the third guy entering the picture: a sarcastic fellow traveler who discovers her secret and becomes her unlikely confidante. Meanwhile her best friend scares herself witless ghost-hunting in Edinburgh's medieval streets, and Eva's boyfriend gets it into his head to come visit without advance warning. It will be a miracle if Eva can leave Scotland with all her relationships, and her sanity, intact.
Types of feedback? Any! I'm still tinkering with this story, but hope to get it posted this year and shape it into the type of Young Adult novel that adults enjoy too.

Summary:Second submission of this story, with edits based on comments received. Please pick all the nits you can.
I wrote this specifically for the Haunted House competition, my first attempt at writing to a theme instead of just writing what comes out. It's more suspense than horror, but I couldn't find suspense on the list.

 | The Ghost Downstairs | lemonlye | Novel | Literary Fiction | 6 | n/a | Aug 25, 2007 |
Summary:When Lina, a thirty-two-year-old nurse, takes a live-in job in a Seattle retirement home, her life acquires two disturbing twists: she learns that ghosts have haunted the old house since a manslaughter-suicide in the 1930s; and she finds herself falling for her mysterious twenty-something coworker Ren, who seems to know more about the strange house than he is telling.
Genre note: I've recently switched the genre from "romance" to "literary fiction," but really it's a mix of those and "paranormal" and a few others--just plain old "commercial fiction" would probably be the best label. Thanks to those who have commented with the suggestions!Chapters: |
 | The Java Pump | JavaJacki | Novel | Religion and Spirituality | 4 | n/a | May 16, 2007 |
Summary:America's fascination with the coffeehouse is second only to the elixir they purchase inside. Deep down they are searching for something much more gratifying than a place serving fragrant beans and yummy muffins.
The Java Pump is a coffeehouse where priests, rabbi's, agnostics and atheists discuss politics and God, and walk away as friends. Live music on Friday and Saturday nights, brings them together on the outside patio for camaraderie and entertainment. The Java Pump draws a vivid cast of characters, each with a story to tell, all anxious to solve an 80-year-old murder--much to the delight of the two ghosts who live there--and have since 1928.
