 | Irish Family Folklore | brosna11 | Short Story | Memoir | 2 | 0.00 | May 1, 2012 |
Summary:Irish folklore is collected and published online these days. I've submitted some family stories and hope they will be added to the collection. Tale types from European sources have been categorized by Stith Thompson and some of the ones my mother told me during my childhood can be found among these categories. One of them is the dead man's coat, another is seeing dead children through a knothole in the door, and the three knocks signifying death in the family is still another. My mother was part of a long tradition of folktelling in Ireland. No TV, no radio. So lots of stories. People on the Blaskets had a huge collection of stories that were recorded. Very entertaining. Thomas O Crohan was an islander who passed on many stories that were published by Oxford U. He was a Gaelic speaker and taught the language to scholars from Norway and Germany. Once the language goes, the stories vanish too.
