Everyone MUST Run Out And Buy Three Dog Life...

This is maybe the most beautiful book I have ever read.

"Mot" wants to be this book when it grows up, though of course it can't be, because this book is already this book.

I will be carrying copies of this book in my purse for months to come, ready to hand one over to any other woman of middle age who is sad or lonely or any of the many things we can find ourselves to be.  I will give it to strangers on airplanes and in doctor's offices.

It's that good.

Okay, this is now turning into an issue, so let me put it in my sig file so everyone knows upfront:  I don't read or review fiction that includes sexual violence.  ] I just don't.  I will fight my way through sexual violence in your memoir, but not in your fiction.  I apologize in advance for anyone who is inconvenienced by this.

I'm on it!

I just ordered it along with A Mind Apart. If you say they are that good, then I want to read them.

http://www.abigailthomas.net/abigail-th … -life.html

"When Abigail Thomas’s husband, Rich, was hit by a car, his brain shattered. Subject to rages, terrors, and hallucinations, he must live the rest of his life in an institution. He has no memory of what he did the hour, the day, the year before. This tragedy is the ground on which Abigail had to build a new life. How she built that life is a story of great courage and great change, of moving to a small country town, of a new family composed of three dogs, knitting, and friendship, of facing down guilt and discovering gratitude. It is also about her relationship with Rich, a man who lives in the eternal present, and the eerie poetry of his often uncanny perceptions. This wise, plainspoken, beautiful book enacts the truth Abigail discovered in the five years since the accident: You might not find meaning in disaster, but you might, with effort, make something useful of it."

Okay, whether or not you're running out to buy the book, you SHOULD read her essay on "getting started" as a writer:

I love the exercises.  I haven't chosen one yet, but I will!

Re: Everyone MUST Run Out And Buy Three Dog Life...

Hi, there. I ordered the book on Amazon and got it in the mail yesterday. I also got her book "Thinking About Memoir". It seems to be full of exercises. I haven't had time to really go thru each book, but I'm glad I have them. I expect to really enjoy them.

Re: Everyone MUST Run Out And Buy Three Dog Life...

I just ordered copies of Thinking About Memoir for myself and my friend Sara (who gave me my copy of "Three Dog Life" so it seems only fair).  I'm thrilled it's exercises!  Let me know if you like it... it will probably be a week before mine gets here.  I always opt for the cheap shipping.

Re: Everyone MUST Run Out And Buy Three Dog Life...

I think I have read "3 dog life."  I recall identifying with her, but don't place it as hugely memorable.   Perhaps because I was already living the same life.

Ah, it's coming back to me, she visits him regularly.  Holy S..t, now would be just the time to read it again.

That is one of the things I love about this site:  we learn about each other through our writing, often become friends on the basis of it.

And isn't it true you often think of friends during the day, the week, especially when there is a trigger?

Ellie, I got a kick out of my having mentioned the Maine flies that I knew of through Sarton's journals,  and whattyouknow, the next thing I read of yours includes those buggers to the max.

Re: Everyone MUST Run Out And Buy Three Dog Life...

I just finished Three Dog and I liked it. I'll give it a four on GoodReads. I connected with the character and feel I know her, but sometimes I couldn't follow. Are we in the apt? Was this before the accident or after? That kind of stuff.

I am also liking her book about memoir although I admit, I haven't done a single exercise.

Re: Everyone MUST Run Out And Buy Three Dog Life...

I did the "apologize for two pages" exercise on my blog.  It was fun.  Not great writing, but fun.

Re: Everyone MUST Run Out And Buy Three Dog Life...

I'm really loving "Thinking About Memoir" by Abigail Thomas. Loads of exercises, though I haven't done any. I just asked for it to be the accompanying text for my class at Senior College next month. Last time I taught, they all got blank journals.

By the way I found scrabulous on Facebook and have completed all 3 turns. I may be done with the site soon, though, because they won't let me have Freedom, Maine as my hometown. I could have Freedom, Idaho or Freedom, California. I also get like this when a site won't let me put the apostrophe in my last name.

Sarah, I'll defiintely read the book.  Obviously, I'd noticed it in the store, but my reading list is something like 300 and I'm so overwhelmed, it barely registered.

I just read the essay and am cursing myself for not reading it yesterday when I procrastinated, fretted, worried, fumed, and terrorized myself over a chapter which I hated writing because I felt nobody would think it makes any sense.

Her advice is good and I'm going to try some of those writing exercises as well.  I always do better if someone throws something out there for me to catch.

I owe you!

Kat
