Re: In the Wings of Danger by Ann Walters discussion thread
Yes, I've changed the whole attracted to her thing and made it more of an unexplained urge to protect her. Remember, it's only been eight years. Geoffrey remembers Owain, so does Bree. The only reason Owain doesn't remember is this still-unknown incident that has blocked his memory.
Thanks for your input, ladies!

Re: In the Wings of Danger by Ann Walters discussion thread
Hi Ann,
I know I'm a million light years behind but I'll get there in the end.
I did not read other reviews, sorry if there are any repetitions. Please bear in mind I'm so new to reviewing.
I can see this subject being very popular, especially with girls.
Even if it goes against the grain, i'd make sure to squeeze in some feminine observations. You mentioned bodice once, perhaps give us a bit more of a description. I'm trying not to sound like a pervy old man, lol. Just keep in mind your readers are teenagers..
On a couple of occasions you talked from Nia's POV then switched to the narrators voice, I'd keep those changes in different paragraphs.
I liked the chapter and have never read this subject matter before, and look forward to reading more.
I have written thoughts in () and any suggested changes are in brackets too after the word that needs removed.
Lips clenched in response to her barn leader’s words, Nia kicked her horse into motion. Lacked courage? (Lacked courage.) How could he say that to her? It wasn’t Tristan the Oh So Magnificent that was aboard a winged horse suited up for the world’s first aerial joust.
She kept the lance upright in her right hand as she’d been told,(taught,) concentrating on balancing the lance so its very length wouldn’t bring it crashing down around her horse’s ears. She’d never played at jousting like the boys she’d grown up with. Riding, yes, and flying, but not jousting. No one in High Meadow jousted! Not until today.
She urged Eira into a canter, the winged horse gathering speed as Nia tested her balance with the extra weight of armor and lance. The chestnut mare galloped off the edge of the cliff, powerful down(-)strokes of her huge wings lifting her into the sky as the ground fell away. Her mane, perfectly matching the silky brown of her coat, whipped in the breeze. Nia watched Eira’s ears. They’d go back flat against her head if the mare was overburdened. So far, the horse didn’t seem to notice her rider’s added pounds. (Great picture you painted here, love it.)
Below, the village of High Meadow stretched before them. More than the usual number of villagers had gathered on the courtyard of the tavern, their eyes glued to the sky. Nia had Eira tip a wing to them. (sorry, it’s just me but how did she send the command, maybe it’s telepathic?) Her heart lightened, unable to remain heavy aboard this(such a) magnificent creature, the envy of all who were grounded.
But there was no use second-guessing Tristan’s decision any longer(‘any longer.’ Suggests she has been guessing for a while, is this the case?). Nia reached up with her left hand and clanged the helm’s face shield into place. She instantly hated the reduced field of vision, even though she only needed to see straight ahead. Grasping the amulet around her neck for a moment, she muttered a hasty invocation to Rhiannon, the horse goddess.
Nia and Eira flew slowly toward the other winged horse and his rider at an angle that would pass the horses left shoulder to left shoulder, close enough for a careless sweep of the wing to unhorse the other rider if the straps weren’t tight. Who needed a lance? Hysterical laughter bubbled in her chest.(The previous line sounds odd..hysterical is not consistant with Nia’s self control.) The two horses flew past each other and continued to the opposite ends of the meadow. Eira’s ears flicked, questioning. Even the horse knew something was wrong. Nia murmured something soothing, but the words that managed to escape the helmet were lost in the wind.
At the blast of a trumpet, Nia turned her mare and again faced the Second Barn horse. With a great gathering of muscles, Eira’s wings beat the air. She gathered speed and raced toward the other pair. Fully committed now, Nia gritted her teeth. On one downsweep, she lowered the lance and couched it against her armor, pointing it across Eira’s neck. Her eyes remained fastened on Catrin, (who’s eyes?)who had completed the same maneuver. The normal whoosh of air from wind and wings was oddly muffled by the jousting helm, and Nia felt detached from the watching world below.

Thanks, Sam! That conversation in the tavern was bugging me. ![]()
On to chapter 18 now! I hope to get the damned thing written by tomorrow, but I am procrastinating.

Yeah, I'm setting chapter 18 aside for a moment. I'm still not happy with chapter 17 and how the threads are coming together. Going to work on that a bit.

Re: In the Wings of Danger by Ann Walters discussion thread
I've revised my first 16 chapters of In the Winds of Danger. My goal was to pepper in a bit more backstory for new readers and solidify everyone's position.
I republished chapters 1,2,3 so you can check it out if you want. No need to review the rest again if you haven't.
I also republished chapter 12--Bree now reveals exactly what Geoffrey did to her.
Chapter 17 is where they all come together in one room. Here's where they now stand (so you don't have to reread everything)
Lady Margery: She knows Bree is Owain's sister, but does not know about their history with Owain. She knows Lord Andrew is the patron of Second and soon to be Third. She knows Geoffrey is Lord Andrew's man in High Meadow. She supports Nia for leader of Third Barn but has been unsuccessful finding a patron.
Owain: Knows about Bree and Geoffrey, knows Lord Andrew is patron of Second and Third. Believes Lord Andrew must be stopped at all costs, and Bree's marriage must also be stopped.
Bree: Knows nothing about Third Barn or High Meadow politics. Supports Lady Margery, but also feels loyalty to Lord Andrew. Her honor keeps her engaged to Geoffrey because it is what they want.
Davyd: Has heard rumors about Nia leading Third Barn, doesn't know about Geoffrey/Lord Andrew, doesn't know Bree is Owain's sister, doesn't know Lord Andrew is the patron. Believes Third Barn must not open now.
Emma: same as Davyd, except she has talked to Nia about someday leading Third.
Those characters will begin the meeting in the tavern in chapter 17. Somehow Nia will come in later
Nia: Doesn't know about Bree/Owain; Tristan, Evan, and Lady Margery have all basically offered her the leadership of Third Barn; Tristan and Evan want it to open now, as does Lord Andrew. Nia knows he's the patron.
There. That should be more clear?

Re: In the Wings of Danger by Ann Walters discussion thread
Hi Ann,
Re-read 1,2,3, 12 and 17.
All the changes really work well and help the story flow. I like the addition of Bree explaining what Geoffrey did to her - there was no reason to delay it. I also like the early establishment of Emma and Nia's relationship. Chapter 17 makes so much more sense now! I thought it was really good that she finally meets Lord Andrew. I only have two queries:
1) After meeting Lord Andrew, and realising how horrible he is, would she not feel a little more trepidation at working for him, and perhaps start to question whether she should be backing someone else - or is she so determined to be the leader of her own barn that she doesn't care who the patron is?
2) In your amendments you've said that Evan and Tristan are pushing for third barn, but in an earlier chapter you had Tristan being very testy with Nia about her leading it and taking his horses. Surely if he wants a third barn he would expect to have to give them horses?
Hope this is vaguely helpful!

Re: In the Wings of Danger by Ann Walters discussion thread
Hey Ann, I read the last chp. Can't comment on the buildup etc but did have some thoughts for you. If owain is going to lose it like that, I think you coould go harder on his emotions, really commit to the anger and how the built up resentment, frustration push him over the edge. I didn't buy llewyne jumping in on the act. He needed a bit more motivation IMHO. After it happened I expected owain to feel more, if not for himself, then for how this would impact Bree. Or even understand how empty and filled with nothingness in a more powerful way. I think it s shocking but as long as you can make people understand and empathize enough owain as a man pushed too far and doing a horrendous thing for all the right reasons it will fine. I think you need to really bring out his emotions more forcefully to support it, as well as regret etc as this. Might be the type of thing to push him over he edge in everything his does, which will make him a great character to write now! Tess xx

Hey girl, I just posted a review to chapter 12. What a way to make me want to turn the pages! Great ending! Love the Bree-Geof idea - had a few suggestions, though. If you want an explanation to any one of them, let me know.

Re: In the Wings of Danger by Ann Walters discussion thread
Susan, I like your ideas. The rewrite is on hold until maybe Labor Day. Next week I have Back to School Night and two book signings! So I will revel in the whole author thing THEN get back to work!
First three days of school were perfect. Of course, they are always on their best behavior the first week. I have an autistic boy in my class again, but this one is not as high-functioning as last year's. This one has an aide until recess (2 1/2 hours) then gets pulled out by the resource specialist after that for a short time. So far, he's been fine, but I haven't really asked him to do anything he doesn't want to do yet. I'll keep you posted since I know you can relate!

Re: In the Wings of Danger by Ann Walters discussion thread
Aw, I hope the little guy gets something special out of your class. Both Jeni's boys have had favorite teachers and funny thing, a lot of them were not para pros. Usually the aide will guide you. It's hard if the aide doesn't. They all have hot buttons.
Hey, have a wonderful time at the signings! Take pictures and post them on FB. I'd love to see them. Hope you sell bunches.
